Book excerpt: Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was at the very center of the Impressionist movement. Although his paintings seem to typify the impressionist style, the variety of media in which he worked and his working practices, which involved careful studio preparation as well as plein air painting, lead us to redefine our concept of Impressionism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography is the first comprehensive encyclopedia of world photography up to the beginning of the twentieth century. It sets out to be the standard, definitive reference work on the subject for years to come. Its coverage is global – an important ‘first’ in that authorities from all over the world have contributed their expertise and scholarship towards making this a truly comprehensive publication. The Encyclopedia presents new and ground-breaking research alongside accounts of the major established figures in the nineteenth century arena. Coverage includes all the key people, processes, equipment, movements, styles, debates and groupings which helped photography develop from being ‘a solution in search of a problem’ when first invented, to the essential communication tool, creative medium, and recorder of everyday life which it had become by the dawn of the twentieth century. The sheer breadth of coverage in the 1200 essays makes the Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography an essential reference source for academics, students, researchers and libraries worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography, both in the form of contemporary practice and that of historical material, now occupies a significant place in the citadels of Western art culture. It has an institutional network of its own, embedded within the broader art world, with its own specialists including academics, critics, curators, collectors, dealers and conservators. All of this cultural activity consolidates an artistic practice and critical discourse of photography that distinguishes what is increasingly termed 'art photography' from its commercial, scientific and amateur guises. But this long-awaited recognition of photography as high art brings new challenges. How will photography's newly privileged place in the art world affect how the history of creative photography is written? Modernist claims for the medium as having an aesthetic often turned on precedents from painting. Postmodernism challenged a cultural hierarchy organized around painting. Nineteenth-century photographs move between the symbolic spaces of the gallery wall and the archive: de-contextualised for art and re-contextualised for history. But what of the contemporary writings, images, and practices that negotiated an aesthetic status for 'the photographic'? Photography and the Arts revisits practices both celebrated and elided by the modernist and postmodernist grand narratives of art and photographic history in order to open up new critical spaces. Written by leading scholars in the fields of photography, art and literature, the essays examine the metaphorical as well as the material exchanges between photography and the fine, graphic, reproductive and sculptural arts.

Book excerpt: Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the professional activities of the art business. Addressing this fast-moving industry, The Art Business: Art World, Art Market analyses the sector’s institutions and structures, including galleries, auction houses and art fairs. The rapid development of art finance and its deployment of art as an asset class are covered, and up to moment observations are delivered on the quickly evolving auction system that includes dramatic changes at the major auction houses, Sotheby’s and Christie’s. This edition highlights growing crises in the market including the ever more unbearable costs of art fair attendance and the lack of a reliable system for establishing ownership and title of artworks. Ever more pressing ethical issues such as toxic museum donors, cultural heritage compliance, and problems of corrupt provenances are explored in detail. Enhanced by new data analytics on the US art market, the author also distils advice and guidance for working art professionals hoping to build their careers. The result is an up-to-date picture of an art business suitable for students and practitioners across the creative sector.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artists' collections often provide fascinating insights into the creative process. Knowing it internally, the collecting artist has an acute sensitivity, respect, and love for this mysterious phenomenon-its origins, its exploratory twists and turns, and its sometimes daunting standards of perfection. This yields a particular relationship between the collector and the collection-not one of subject to object, but rather a sympathetic and delighted dialogue between personalities bent on creativity. The collection of Eunice and Hal David instantly bespeaks this artistic rapport. Filling most of the walls in their airy home-where views encompass inviting couches and chairs, contemporary sculptures, and a baby grand piano-are drawings by many of the individuals who have shaped the course of nineteenth-and twentieth-century art - from Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, and Gustav Klimt to Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney. The Davids have always lived with their collection, and seeing it in their home and talking to them about it, one is struck by their ongoing pleasure in it and its integral relation to their own creative world of music and lyrics. So many of us have been moved by Hal David's lyrics: "What the world needs now is love, sweet love''; "What's it all about, Alfie?"; "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head." That he doesn't shrink from acknowledging the difficulties that are inherent to our emotional and creative lives is evident both in the recurring themes of heartbreak and pain in his song lyrics and in his frank acknowledgment of the creative blocks that he has confronted (it took him two years to find the lyrics for "What the World Needs Now Is Love").' Yet Hal is overwhelmingly life affirming, both as an artist and as a person. One sees this as well in the collection of drawings that the Davids have assembled, which includes so many works that testify to the creation of art as a form of affirmative connection. Connection is indeed the operative word when it comes to the collection, because it is nothing if not the expression of the intertwined lives of two people, Eunice and Hal. As they will confirm, it is a direct outgrowth of their lives together.
