Book excerpt: Harrison Sanders, is a successful Black businessman living in the Pacific Northwest sporting a white demographic mindset. When his best friend dies and bequeaths Harrison his estate, which includes a house in upstate New York, he is catapulted to wealth and explores his options.Harrison sets out on a journey to unravel the threads of suspicion wrapped around his white friend’s cloak and dagger life. When he sojourns to the house in upstate New York, he is foolishly vulnerable to the upstate aura and encounters a childhood friend, who tells him about a nearby town called Chisolm. The friend not only conveys the beauty and newness of the town, but also succinctly states that the thriving town’s inhabitants are all black, and mostly wealthy.Finding Chisolm brings together an assemblage of diverse characters who become emotionally intertwined in Harrison’s struggle to either bask in the euphoria of his black roots or marry his Vietnamese girlfriend, because in Chisolm, they are mutually exclusive.

Book Synopsis Measuring Lead Exposure in Infants, Children, and Other Sensitive Populations by : National Research Council
Download or read book Measuring Lead Exposure in Infants, Children, and Other Sensitive Populations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lead is a ubiquitous toxic agent that is especially damaging to the young child and the developing fetus. Unlike many environmental health risks, the risks associated with lead are no longer theoretical but have been observed for many years. Indeed, the first regulation of lead in paint was enacted in the 1920s. Currently, because of growing evidence of lead toxicity at lower concentrations, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently lowered its lead-exposure guideline to 10 ug/dl lead in blood from 25 ug/dl. Measuring Lead Exposure in Infants, Children, and Other Sensitive Populations addresses the public health concern about the logistics and feasibility of lead screening in infants and children at such low concentrations. This book will serve as the basis for all U.S. Public Health Service activities and for all state and local programs in monitoring lead.

Book excerpt: THE THIRD BOOK IN CLAIRE MACLEARY'S MULTI-AWARD-LISTED HARCUS & LAIRD SERIES 'Claire MacLeary has, with little fuss or fanfare, written a crime series that subverts and rejuvenates the crime genre' Scots Whay Hae When Aberdeen housewife Debbie Milne abruptly vanishes, her husband is frantic with worry and turns to local PIs Maggie Laird and ‘Big Wilma’ Harcus. Maggie is reluctant to take on a ‘misper’ case, but Wilma cajoles her into a covert operation – trawling women’s refuges and homeless squats in search of a lead. But when a woman’s body is discovered in a skip, the unlikely investigators are dragged into a deeper mystery involving people-trafficking, gambling and prostitution – and they’re in deadly danger. With the police struggling to make headway and the clock ticking, the race is on for Harcus & Laird to find answers, further straining their already fraying relationship. Claire MacLeary fashions a surprising, gritty, fast-paced tale with the warmth and wisdom of women who are in their prime.

Book excerpt: Early in their lives, Parker Thomas and Sarah Nevels had all the exuberance college sweethearts could have. Their relationship flourished, despite their different rearing, and the pair was passionately involved when their bond was interrupted. Sarah had become pregnant. She was just a sophomore, and Parker was a senior ready to embark on the business world. Sarah, confused, and yielding to a strong parental influence, severed the relationship with Parker and began an estrangement that not only took a father away from his daughter, but also deprived Sarah of the only love she had known. Now, twenty-eight years later, Parker, a successful businessman who has grown accustomed to being alone, has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. His dying wish is that he gets to know his only child, Kelly Nevels, who is, unbeknownst to Parker, living with the discernment that her father had died shortly after her birth. With his illness at the forefront and his existence waning, Parker has to find a way to cultivate a family relationship with The Nevels Girls, who have, over the last 28 years, become comfortable living as a close-knit mother-daughter dyad.
