Book excerpt: The bestselling motivational guide that TheAtlantic.com calls "a rallying cry for women to get the money they deserve." Why are women so often overlooked and underpaid? What are the real reasons men get raises more often than women? How can women ask for--and actually get--the money, the job, the recognition they deserve? Prompted by her own experience as cohost of Morning Joe, Mika Brzezinski asked a wide range of successful women to share the critical lessons they learned while moving up in their fields. Power players such as Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Harvard's Victoria Budson, comedian Susie Essman, and many more shared their surprising personal stories. They spoke candidly about why women are paid less and the pitfalls women face--and play into. Now expanded to address gender dynamics in the #MeToo era, Know Your Value blends compelling personal stories with the latest research on why many women don't negotiate their compensation, why negotiating aggressively usually backfires, and what can be done about it. For any woman who has ever wondered if her desire to be liked can be a liability (yes), if there is a way to reclaim her contribution after it's been co-opted in a meeting (yes), and if there are strategies men use to get ahead that women should too (yes!), Know Your Value provides vital advice to help women be their own best advocates.

Book excerpt: We develop a framework where mismatch between vacancies and job seekers across sectors translates into higher unemployment by lowering the aggregate job-finding rate. We use this framework to measure the contribution of mismatch to the recent rise in U.S. unemployment by exploiting two sources of cross-sectional data on vacancies, JOLTS and HWOL, a new database covering the universe of online U.S. job advertisements. Mismatch across industries and occupations explains at most 1/3 of the total observed increase in the unemployment rate, whereas geographical mismatch plays no apparent role. The share of the rise in unemployment explained by occupational mismatch is increasing in the education level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of Americans found themselves out of work for long periods in 2020 and 2021. When they attempt to find new jobs, will their employment histories be held against them? In a recent survey experiment fielded in the United States, I find that fictional job applicants who experienced gaps in employment during the coronavirus pandemic are seen as less desirable hires. When asked to select hypothetical job-seekers to fill positions in the hospitality industry, respondents are about 20% less likely to choose applicants with pandemic-era resume gaps, compared to otherwise identical applicants who worked continuously throughout the pandemic. This hiring penalty is consistent no matter why the fictional job applicants were out of work, whether they were laid off, yo-yoed in and out of employment, or stopped working to supervise virtual school for their children. In addition, fictional job applicants who were out of work during the pandemic are perceived more negatively than their continuously employed peers. Respondents describe them as less hardworking, less dedicated, less professional, and less qualified than those who remained employed. Because pandemic-era job losses have been concentrated among people of color and women, these findings have troubling implications for racial and gender equity in the United States.
