Book excerpt: Since the start of the 20th Century, the Italians and Chinese in the Little Italy/Chinatown area in New York City have endured an uneasy truce. In the first three quarters of the century, the Italians ruled the neighborhood with an iron fist. But starting in the 1970's, the dynamics began to change, as more Italians moved out and droves of Chinese began flowing into Chinatown from China. This did not bode well for Italian mob boss Tony Bentimova (Tony B), so he enlisted the help of his most trusted killer, Big Fat Fanny Fanelli, all six foot six inches and six hundred and sixty pounds of her, to ensure the Italians maintained control of all the illegal rackets in Little Italy, which was slowly, but surely being transformed into Chinatown.

Book excerpt: Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me celebrates the African American oral tradition of toasting, one of the key roots of contemporary rap. Jackson was among the few to appreciate the profane energy and beauty of this rhymed form, collecting such classic toasts as "Stackolee," "The Titanic," "Signifying Monkey," "Dance of the Freaks," and dozens more. This unexpurgated edition offers the raw, vibrant, and still startling imagery of these toasts shaped by decades of oral transmission through the voices of countless rhymers. Just like rap, the toasting tradition enabled previously unheard or stifled topics, including racism, sexual exploitation, economic deprivation, and social oppression, to be expressed in a form that embodied multiple layers of meaning. Jackson helped preserve a rapidly dying art form to ensure that it would be available for many generations to come. In the words of Robin D.G. Kelley, "All you Hip Hop heads need to know this book if you want to know your roots."

Book excerpt: What You See Is What You Hear develops a unique model of analysis that helps students and advanced scholars alike to look at audiovisual texts from a fresh perspective. Adopting an engaging writing style, the author draws an accessible picture of the field, offering several analytical tools, historical background, and numerous case studies. Divided into five main sections, the monograph covers problems of definitions, history, and most of all analysis. The first part raises the main problems related to audiovisuality, including taxonomical and historical questions. The second part provides the bases for the understanding of audiovisual creative communication as a whole, introducing a novel theoretical model for its analysis. The next three part focus elaborate on the model in all its constituents and with plenty of case studies taken from the field of cinema, TV, music videos, advertising and other forms of audiovisuality. Methodologically, the book is informed by different paradigms of film and media studies, multimodality studies, structuralism, narratology, “auteur theory” in the broad sense, communication studies, semiotics, and the so-called “Numanities.” What You See Is What You Hear enables readers to better understand how to analyze the structure and content of diverse audiovisual texts, to discuss their different idioms, and to approach them with curiosity and critical spirit.

Book excerpt: THE YANKEE VILLAGE OF LONG RIDGE CRADLES OUR STORY of a boy and girl working, play-wrestling, and growing amid the red barns and broad haylands adjoining their homes. After school and doing chores, when the long afternoons of Eastern War Time turned warm with the season, the young pals rode a great, black horse across fields and over stone walls, moving as one rider with its animal power. They often sought a deep pond in the forest, stripped to scant underwear and swam in the chill waters, then sunned themselves dry on a warm shelf of rock. In these swift hours, stolen out of time, they left unspoken the special feelings they sensed, signified by tasting each other with a first kiss beside a woodland spring. Yet time and the war were hurrying their lives. Come darkness on the hill and they could see on the horizon the flaming glow of dying American ships, loaded oil tankers torpedoed by Nazi submarines. Yet before the young couple finishes their teen years, they leave the Ridges to seize their futures at home, at sea, and in a world at war. It was a time when all goodbyes were uncertain and some were forever.

Flushed with pride after designing a wedding gown for British royalty, Jenny returns from London, determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a famous fashion designer. Why not? She designs dresses and lingerie for New York and Philadelphia manufacturers and owns a successful boutique, housed in a charming little Victorian house. She designs gowns and hotel uniforms for wealthy clients on both the East and West coasts. As soon as she divorces Jonathan, an abusive husband, she marries Tony, the man she loves. She didnt marry Tony, in the first place, because she realized that Tonys twin brother Gus also loves her. It was impossible to marry one and hurt the other. Gus solves her dilemma by marrying Martha. But Martha hates Jenny, jealous of her beauty and because she knows Gus loves Jenny. In an attempt to kill Jenny in a public garage one day, Martha loses her own life. Tony manages the boutique, also the workers in both the shop and in the workroom where skilled dressmakers make the original gowns that Jenny designs under her own label. So when Jenny inherits the lingerie factory from her friend Colya, Tony has more work than he can handle. They invite Gus to give up his restaurant in New York, move to Philadelphia and manage the factory. He leaps at the chance. Separation for the twins was always difficult. When one is seriously injured, the other instantly experiences the same pain. Jennys household is run by two competent women who care for her small son Jon and baby Lisa. Jonathan knows nothing about his daughter until their chance meeting at Disney World where a terrible scene ensues. At Christmas time, he brings gifts to his children. Jenny nearly cries when she sees how sick he looks. Later, when she and Tony return from a honeymoon in Paris, they find that Jonathan, now mentally ill, has kidnaped Lisa. A frantic search follows, ending in tragedy. Gus does well managing the factory, which he is told he may buy one day at a bargain basement price. Meanwhile, he becomes entangled with a rich girl who stalks and tricks him into marriage, claiming that her baby belongs to him. Love binds Jenny and her family together. Her family includes Jonathans siblings and their family members, all of whom come to live close to Jenny. Tony jokingly calls her a little spider who draws everyone into her web. Because she has little time for her children and heaps responsibility on Tony until he has a heart attack, Jenny realizes that fame is a fraud, not worth the sacrifice of those she loves.

Book excerpt: Hamba Gashle is the inside story of white society in colonial Southern Africa during the 1950s and 1960s. Ian Hassall's edgy memoir provides a vivid and disturbing depiction of childhood and family life against a background of racial exploitation, political change and the disintegration of his white community. Written as a diary from childhood through to early adulthood, the deceptively simple style provides a sense of immediacy, building a vivid picture through apparently unconnected events. The child narrator arrives in Northern Rhodesia from England aged four. Soon after, his parents divorce and he is fostered for several years. His mother marries an anti British Afrikaaner who is a strong influence on the boy. As a teenager he becomes delinquent and fails at school. He moves with his father's family to Rhodesia as it is approaching UDI. The narrator has developed anti-racist views and joins the protest movement at university in South Africa. Finally he returns to London in 1970, alone, a stranger. Ian Hassall produces a rich and informative picture of this period, honest, critical and unflattering, attacking its racism. The work is carefully researched so that key historical events are portrayed accurately and intimately. The youthful narrator's preoccupations, adventures, sexual encounters and daydreams contrast with more sober political observations, sometimes hilariously. This is also a study of childhood, and a celebration of youth which transcends time or location. 'Hamba Gashle' means both chameleon and take it easy, because of the animal's leisurely pace. The book's title reflects the author's admiration for this wonderful creature and its attributes, some of which he required to survive his upbringing.

Book excerpt: She lived at full throttle on stage, screen, and in real life, with highs that made history and lows that finally brought down the curtain at age forty-seven. Judy Garland died over thirty years ago, but no biography has so completely captured her spirit -- and demons -- until now. From her tumultuous early years as a child performer to her tragic last days, Gerald Clarke reveals the authentic Judy in a biography rich in new detail and unprecedented revelations. Based on hundreds of interviews and drawing on her own unfinished -- and unpublished -- autobiography, Get Happy presents the real Judy Garland in all her flawed glory. With the same skill, style, and storytelling flair that made his bestselling Capote a landmark literary biography, Gerald Clarke sorts through the secrets and the scandals, the legends and the lies, to create a portrait of Judy Garland as candid as it is compassionate. Here are her early years, during which her parents sowed the seeds of heartbreak and self-destruction that would plague her for decades ... the golden age of Hollywood, brought into sharp focus with cinematic urgency, from the hidden private lives of the movie world's biggest stars to the cold-eyed businessmen who controlled the machine ... and a parade of brilliant and gifted men -- lovers and artists, impresarios and crooks -- who helped her reach so many creative pinnacles yet left her hopeless and alone after each seemingly inevitable fall. Here, then, is Judy Garland in all her magic and despair: the woman, the star, the legend, in a riveting saga of tragedy, resurrection, and genius.
