Book Synopsis The Zebra Finch by : Matthew Vriends
Download or read book The Zebra Finch written by Matthew Vriends and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-05-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zebra finches are very close to wild birds in their behaviors, and the natural history and behavior of these birds is discussed in detail. Zebra finches mate for life and do not do well living alone, so most often they are purchased in pairs. The book takes this into consideration right from the start, and all care and handling information is offered for two or more birds. This includes detailed information on breeding, which is extremely popular with owners of exotic finches. Proper housing, routine care, and in-depth information on nutrition and feeding are included. Possible health problems are also covered. A Resource section provides information on birds clubs, books and magazines and useful Internet sites.

Book Synopsis Grassfinches in Australia by : Mark Shephard OAM
Download or read book Grassfinches in Australia written by Mark Shephard OAM and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not surprising that Australian grassfinches are highly popular with ornithologists and aviculturists, for included among the species are one of the most beautiful of all birds – the Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae – and one of the most familiar cagebirds – the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata. Despite a scarcity in published works on finches, interest in the species is growing, leading to a dramatic advancement in our knowledge of many species. For example, we have gained new information from field observations carried out on little-known species, including the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch Erythrura trichroa and the Red-eared Firetail Stagonopleura oculata. Significant advances in taxonomic research, largely as a consequence of the development and refinement of biochemical analyses, often involving DNA-DNA hybridisation, have given us a new insight into relationships among species, with some unexpected alliances being determined. Additionally, dramatic changes have taken place in avicultural practices, and in virtually all countries aviculture has taken on a new professional approach, with the most notable results being increased productivity and success with a wider variety of species. After a lapse of almost half a century since publication of Klaus Immelmann’s eminent work on finches, based on extensive field studies, the time has come for a new examination of Australian grassfinches. In Grassfinches in Australia, Joseph Forshaw, Mark Shephard and Anthony Pridham have summarised our present knowledge of each species, and have given readers a visual appreciation of the birds in their natural habitats and in aviculture. The resulting combination of superb artwork and scientifically accurate text ensures that this volume will become the standard reference work on Australian grassfinches. In addition to enabling aviculturists to know more about these finches in the wild as a guide to their own husbandry techniques, detailed information on current management practices for all species in captivity is provided. The book also includes colour plates depicting some of the more common mutations held in Australian and overseas collections.

Book Synopsis The Kentucky Breeding Bird Atlas by : Brainard L. Palmer-Ball, Jr.
Download or read book The Kentucky Breeding Bird Atlas written by Brainard L. Palmer-Ball, Jr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years in the making, The Kentucky Breeding Bird Atlas presents the results of a seven-year survey of all birds that nest in the Bluegrass State, providing photographs of each species. This work summarizes the distribution and abundance of these bird species, and describes such recent phenomena as the invasions of the Blue Grosbeak and House Finch and the notable decline of other familiar species. Introductory material outlines the methodology used to complete the survey and summarizes its results. Of particular interest, this work helps to document the effect human alteration of the landscape has had on our bird populations. Some of the most common and widespread species in Kentucky today, for example, may have been among the most rare only two hundred years ago. Information for each species includes its current and historical status in the state, habitat preferences, specific details of the construction and placement of nests, and other pertinent aspects of nesting biology. Results of the survey are organized by physiographic region and degree of forestation. For rare or locally distributed species, more specific details concerning individual breeding records are given. Accompanying maps plot each species' distribution and abundance within the state. An additional section briefly summarizes the former status of twelve extinct or extirpated species. The Kentucky Breeding Bird Atlas is sponsored by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and the Nongame Wildlife Program of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources in cooperation with the Kentucky Ornithological Society.

Book Synopsis The Birds of Nebraska by : Paul Johnsgard
Download or read book The Birds of Nebraska written by Paul Johnsgard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated list of the birds of Nebraska grew gradually out of research associated with my writing of the Birds of the Great Plains: Breeding Species and Their Distribution (Johnsgard, 1979a). It expands and updates an earlier version that was published in 2013 by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries DigitalCommons' Zea Books (Johnsgard, 2013a). It has been updated and modified in its current revision to conform with the most recent (2017) major revision of the American Ornithologists' Society's Checklist of North American Birds (Chesser et al., 2017). It has also been modified in its current revision to conform very closely to the most recent "Official List of the Birds of Nebraska" by the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union (Gubanyi, 1997, and later supplements in the Nebraska Bird Review, to 84:138-150). The NOU's official state list of birds (461 species as of 2017) is based on actual specimen evidence or some other convincing basis of each species' proven occurrence in the state. That list includes 337 "regular" species, 29 "casual" species, 90 "accidental" species, and 5 extinct or extirpated species. In this edition I have classified 368 of the 461 species of Nebraska birds as ranging in relative frequency of occurrence as "abundant" to "rare." There are also 61 species considered to be of "accidental" occurrence, having been reliably reported in Nebraska no more than five times, 20 that are considered "extremely rare" or "very rare," if reported from six to 25 times. There are also three extinct, four extirpated, and five unsuccessfully introduced species. Thirteen hypothetical species of dubious origin or identification are mentioned parenthetically. The text includes more than 123,000 words, nearly 200 literature references, and 19 pages of drawings and maps.
