Book Synopsis Water management, communities and environment by : Hilde Greefs
Download or read book Water management, communities and environment written by Hilde Greefs and published by Academia Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More so than in most other countries, water management was crucial in the Middle Ages and early modern era in the Low Countries where both man and the changing ecological conditions strongly affected the landscape. Striking is the enormous variation in solutions to the water threat. The authors in this Jaarboek voor Ecologische Geschiedenis primarily focus on the interaction between society and the environment: social-political and social-economic factors prove to explain why the solutions implemented were sometimes sustainable and sometimes not. The various case studies are introduced by Martin Reuss, a water management specialist from the United States.

Book Synopsis In Search of a Path by : Roger Janssen
Download or read book In Search of a Path written by Roger Janssen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign policy of small states is an often neglected topic, which is particularly the case when it comes to Suriname. How did the young Republic deal with its dependency on the Netherlands for development aid after 1975? Was Paramaribo following a certain foreign policy strategy or did it merely react towards internal and external events? What were the decision making processes in defining the foreign policy course and who was involved in these processes? And why was a proposal discussed to hand back the right of an independent foreign and defence policy to a Dutch Commonwealth government in the early 1990s? These questions are examined here in depth, in the first comprehensive analysis of Suriname’s foreign policy from 1975 to 1991. The book provides readers interested in Caribbean and Latin American affairs with a detailed account of Suriname’s external relations. Moreover, the young Republic may stand as a case study, as it confronted the difficulties and challenges that small developing states often face.

Book Synopsis Surinaams contrast by : A.A. van Stipriaan
Download or read book Surinaams contrast written by A.A. van Stipriaan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Infrastructures written by and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All sectors of the Dutch infrastructures have undergone a degree of commercialisation, liberalisation or privatisation over the last ten to twenty years. Where in the past the infrastructure landscape was dominated by public monopolies, the ownership and management of infrastructures is today shared by several public and private sector players. The original goals of this 'regime change' have in many cases been achieved: greater efficiency, a greater focus on the customer and more choice for consumers. The question is whether this emphasis on current consumer interests allows enough scope to achieve long-term objectives which affect the whole of our society: innovation, long-term availability and sustainability of infrastructures. This is of crucial importance for economic and social development, which is coming under increasing pressure due to the combined impact of the exhaustion of natural resources and climate change. The transition to a sustainable future demands substantial investment in infrastructures, which cannot be taken for granted in the present situation. The WRR has investigated how these investments could be safeguarded in the long term, whilst retaining the efficiency of the infrastructures.

Book Synopsis Compact city extended : outline for future policy research and design by : Luuk Boelens
Download or read book Compact city extended : outline for future policy research and design written by Luuk Boelens and published by 010 Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
