Book excerpt: The third in a series of annual volumes on the financial sector from the Brookings Institution and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania explores the ongoing process of globalization in the financial services industry. Leading financial experts from the corporate, government, and academic communities examine global trends in banking, in reinsurance industries, and in securities markets; the challenges these trends pose for national regulations; the evolution of global accounting standards; the alleged effects of global hedge funds on capital flows into and out of emerging markets; and the erosion of legal barriers to the establishment of foreign financial services firms around the world.Opening remarks by Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers present both national security and economic arguments for direct American support for increased global interdependence in trade in goods and services, including U.S. support for international financial institutions.
Book Synopsis Consolidated Financial Reporting by : Paul Taylor
Download or read book Consolidated Financial Reporting written by Paul Taylor and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-05-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consolidated Financial Reporting introduces and examines what is currently the most central and controversial area in financial reporting. In an innovative and distinctive way the author integrates concepts, techniques, controversies and current practice. Techniques are introduced within a framework which shows why they work and what the figures mean. Controversial issues are grounded within modern accounting theory and practice. All core areas and relevant standards are covered including: acquisition and merger accounting; fair values at acquisition; goodwill; consolidated cash flow statements; reporting consolidated financial performance; foreign currency translation; segmental reporting; off-balance sheet financing; and related party transactions. The book is designed so that readers with particular interests - for example in technical matters or concepts and standards - can easily find their way through clearly marked sections. Discussion and calculation reinforce each other - calculations illustrate controversies, and controversies and concepts illustrate techniques. Examples are carefully graduated and care is taken not to obscure principles with unnecessarily complex calculations. Materials are set into an international context. The book is both rigorous and accessible. It is an extensive revision of and successor to the author′s 1987 title Consolidated Financial Statements. Because of recent theoretical and institutional developments, an enormous amount of new material has been added and new teaching approaches to many areas included. There are many more worked examples and exercises as well as approachable discussions of ′state-of-the-art′ advanced topics. The solutions notes for each case are avilable on a disk for instructors who recommend the book for course use.

Book Synopsis Transnational Accounting by : Dieter Ordelheide
Download or read book Transnational Accounting written by Dieter Ordelheide and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 3322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable effort has been made over the last ten years by such institutions as the EU, OECD, UNO and the IASC towards the harmonisation of accounting standards. It is recognised though that uniformity and true compatibility of financial instruments cannot be achieved while accounting operates in individual national economic and legal environments. A knowledge of national accounting standards and practice continues to be indispensable for the analysis of financial statements. Transnational Accounting is a unique comparative study of accounting standards of fourteen major economic powers, plus the regimes of the IASC and EU. Each chapter is standardised for easy comparison and written by a recognised expert in his or her country. The Editor, The Late Dieter Ordelheide, was Professor of Business Economics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main. This groundbreaking work enables the reader to develop a thorough practical understanding of national accounting practices and be fully at home with financial statements in an international context. Each volume includes a detailed reference matrix listing approximately 100 key accounting subjects and their treatment across all regulatory and accounting regimes.

Book Synopsis Embedded Politics by : Gerald Andrew McDermott
Download or read book Embedded Politics written by Gerald Andrew McDermott and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-11-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded Politics offers a unique framework for analyzing the impact of past industrial networks on the way postcommunist societies build new institutions to govern the restructuring of their economies. Drawing on a detailed analysis of communist Czechoslovakia and contemporary Czech industries and banks, Gerald A. McDermott argues that restructuring is best advanced through the creation of deliberative or participatory forms of governance that encourages public and private actors to share information and take risks. Further, he contends that institutional and organizational changes are intertwined and that experimental processes are shaped by how governments delegate power to local public and private actors and monitor them. Using comparative case analysis of several manufacturing sectors, Embedded Politics accounts for change and continuity in the formation of new economic governance institutions in the Czech Republic. It analytically links the macropolitics of state policy with the micropolitics of industrial restructuring. Thus the book advances an alternative approach for the comparative study of institutional change and industrial adjustment. As a historical and contemporary analysis of Czech firms and public institutions, this book will command the attention of students of postcommunist reforms, privatization, and political-economic transitions in general. But also given its interdisciplinary approach and detailed empirical analysis of policy-making and firm behavior, Embedded Politics is a must read for scholars of politics, economics, sociology, political economy, business organization, and public policy. Gerald A. McDermott is Assistant Professor of Management in The Wharton School of Management at The University of Pennsylvania. His research applies recent advances in comparative political economy and industrial organization, including theories of social networks, historical institutionalism, and incomplete markets to analyze issues of economic governance, firm creation, and industrial restructuring in advanced and newly industrialized countries. As evidenced by Embedded Politics, his current focus is on problems of institutional and organizational learning in the formation of meso-level governance institutions in emerging market and postsocialist economies. McDermott also works as Senior Research Fellow at the IAE Escuela de Direccion y Negocios at Universidad Austral in Buenos Aires, and he has served as Project Coordinator at the Inter-American Development Bank. He has consulted for the Finance, Private Sector, and Infrastructure Division at the World Bank and advised the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic. In addition he has published many papers and book chapters on entrepreneurship, privatization, institutions, and networks in Central Europe and Latin America.
