Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on hazardous child labor, relating the negative and the positive, the problems, and the solutions. The first section samples research on what is known about how children are uniquely affected by workplace hazards and in what settings children are working in hazardous conditions. The second part of the book presents good practices that demonstrate different ways in which hazardous work can be reduced. It explores what can happen when leadership is taken by government, workers, employers, and the community. It also demonstrates that no one party can achieve the result on its own; ultimately, others must support, assist, and do their part. The examples selected here are practical ones that show promise for scaling up nationally and globally.

It considers the scale and scope of the pandemic and its anticipated impact on the economy and education in sub-Saharan African countries. It draws some lessons for Namibia. The paper concludes how the poverty impacted the pandemic and the quality of labour force eventually provides some policy implications. The study employed a qualitative research technique and the data mainly collected from secondary sources such as Government Reports, UNAIDS, WHO, etc. The results of this study are under guidance of the previous studies. The study found out that there is a negative relationship between HIV/AIDS and economic growth in Namibia. This means that indeed HIV/AIDS can hamper economic growth in the country.

Book excerpt: The problem of children left orphaned and vulnerable by HIV/AIDS is receiving increasing attention worldwide. Yet, even as the global community acknowledges the human tragedy that orphaning on the scale heralded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic represents, it is widely speculated that large numbers of orphans may themselves represent a security challenge. By reducing the resources available to children and destabilising the institutions on which they depend - such as the family, school and community - it is argued that HIV/AIDS may severely affect children's development, creating generations of disenfranchised and potentially dysfunctional young people left with little alternative but engage in criminal and other threatening activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is a region devastated by HIV/AIDS. The extent of the epidemic is only now becoming clear, as increasing numbers of people with HIV are becoming ill. In the absence of massively expanded prevention, treatment and care efforts, the AIDS death toll on the continent is set to escalate rapidly. Despite progress being achieved in localized settings, the alarming statistics reflect the continuing failure of advanced countries to mount a response that matches the scale and severity of the African HIV/AIDS crisis. Over and above the colossal personal suffering, the dire social and economic consequences for fragile nation-states are already being felt, not only in health but in education, industry, agriculture, transport, human resources and economies in general. Countries already crippled by drought, poverty, debt, forced migration and civil war must now contend with massive deterioration in child survival rates and life expectancy, the erosion of the economic family base, massive and insupportable demands on health and public services, chronic labour shortages and volatile national security. Through a critical and detailed exploration of specific case studies, this invaluable volume brings together an unparalleled array of international contributors to redefine the political and economic contours of this calamitous epidemic. It examines the impact of the shortfalls in the 'Global Fund' allocation, the slow pace of administrative processing of aid and the weaknesses of institutional responses to the crisis from African countries and their partners in the global health community. It is essential reading for all concerned with public health, epidemiology, HIV/AIDS research, globalization, development, Africa and indeed our shared future. Features include: ” Unique assessments of HIV/AIDS and its impact on democracy and governance in African states ” Wide-ranging regional and country studies by the foremost thinkers in their fields ” Multi-disciplinary contributions from areas including: Politics, Sociology, Public Health and Development Studies ” Compelling and convincing evidence, thematic in approach ” Innovative and culturally specific insights for long-term planning, care and support

This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of HIV/AIDS on education in sub-Saharan African countries. It looks at the situation at both macro and micro levels and emphasizes the need to react quickly and to institutionalize the response of education systems to the negative consequences of the pandemic. Drawing on studies of a few countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the first part of the book discusses the practicability of implementing a range of indicators for monitoring the impact of HIV/AIDS, specifically on the demand for supply, management, and quality of education at all levels. It underlines the difficulties of assessing and monitoring the impact on demand, supply, and quality in many of the worst affected countries in Africa. The second part focuses on the essential role that the education system has to play in preventing the expansion and mitigating the impact of the epidemic. A range of responses is developed, drawing on the experience of various national and international organizations. This part also presents an overview of the education system in several countries that have attempted programs to impart life skills to children and young people. It considers the problems of evaluating such programs in light of cost effectiveness. (Author/WFA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 2008, Heads of State of the Southern African Development Community adopted the ground-breaking SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. This followed a concerted campaign by NGOs under the umbrella of the Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance. By the 2013 Heads of State summit, 13 countries had signed and 12 countries had ratified the SADC Gender Protocol. The Protocol is now in force. With two years to go, time is ticking to 2015, when governments need to have achieved 28 targets for the attainment of gender equality. In keeping with the Alliance slogan: "Yes we must", this 2013 Barometer provides a wealth of updated data against which progress will be measured by all those who cherish democracy in the region. The SADC Gender and Development Index (SGDI), introduced in 2011, complements the Citizen Score Card (CSC) that has been running for five years to benchmark progress.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that HIV/AIDS has grave implications for children beyond infection: orphans, trauma and disruption of lifestyle, poverty, stigmatisation and abuse being just some of the consequences. UNICEF and UNAIDS have identified this situation as the most significant issue facing children today. During the time when the impact of the HIV pandemic on children, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, was becoming well known, research into early childhood development was gaining global recognition. This study is supported by the World Forum Foundation, the University of Namibia and the Centre for Social Justice and Social Change of the University of Western Sydney. It represents a first step to corroborate research into HIV/AIDS with current knowledge about the outcome of experiences during early life, in the Namibian context. Using quantitative and qualitative data, the study provides an insight into what it means to be young, orphaned, infected or affected in other ways by HIV/AIDS. It draws conclusions about the ways in which global principles of healthy environments and quality settings for children are being, and can be met, in the current conditions.
