Book excerpt: This memorandum deals with the metallurgy and properties of thoria-strengthened nickel, a material which shows promise as a structural metal for use in the temperature range of 1900 to 2400 F where the present nickel- and cobalt-base superalloys lose most of their useful strength. Discussed in the memorandum are methods of producing dispersions in metals, and the processing variables involved in making dispersion-strengthened nickel. An entire section on the mechanical properties of thoria-strengthened nickel is included. Given in this section are tensile, creep-rupture, shear, and fatigue properties, as well as the effect of various thermal and mechanical treatments on the material. Physical-property data comprise one section of the memorandum, and oxidation resistance another. In a section on joining the following joining processes are discussed: resistance welding, flash welding, brazing, diffusion bonding by hot pressing, electron-beam welding, fusion welding, and others. In the last section of the memorandum the author presents an outlook for future developments of dispersion-strengthened nickel. (Author).

A literature survey describes the current inspection practices employed on diffusion-bonded laminates and the nature of the interface and bond properties. Test specimens of titanium, columbium, and TD-nickel were prepared for evaluating various test methods. The specimens provided a range of thicknesses and varying degree of bond quality as determined by mechanical property tests. In addition, a number of diffusion-bonded specimens were supplied by the Air Force. Conventional ultrasonic techniques and recently developed selective interface inspection techniques clearly indicate bond conditions where these vary from a no-bond condition to substandard bonds. A number of methods show potential correlation between a quantitative expression of bond quality such as shear or tensile strength. These methods include longitudinal and shear wave velocity, ultrasonic attenuation, and vibration analysis. (Author).

Demonstration structures were fabricated and tested in titanium alloys, refractory metals, and dispersion strengthened materials. TD Nickel combustion cans were tested at 2000F, columbium alloy panels were tested at 2500F, tantalum alloy box columns were tested at 3000F, and a tantalum nosecap was tested to destruction up to 4000F. No mechanical failures of joints were found in any of these tests but sulfidation attack on TD Nickel was responsible for failure of bonds in this material. Continuous seam diffusion bonding was used to fabricate beams and panels in Ti-6Al-4V. Tensile, fatigue, end compression, and bending tests were performed without joint failures. (Author).
