We derive the expressions for the corresponding Hamiltonian in the basis of the instantaneous eigenstates in matter, in terms of quantities one can derive from the flavor-basis Hamiltonian and its derivative, for an arbitrary number of neutrino flavors. We make our expressions explicit for the two-neutrino flavor case and apply our results to the neutrino propagation in core-collapse supernovae where the Hamiltonian includes both coupling to matter and to neutrinos. We show that the neutrino flavor evolution depends on the mixing matrix derivatives involving not only the derivative of the matter mixing angles but also of the phases. In particular, we point out the important role of the phase derivatives, that appear due to the neutrino-neutrino interaction, and show how it can cause an oscillating degeneracy between the diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian in the basis of the eigenstates in matter. Lastly, our results also reveal that the end of the synchronization regime is due to a rapid increase of the phase derivative and identify the condition to be fulfilled for the onset of bipolar oscillations involving both the off-diagonal neutrino-neutrino interaction contributions and the vacuum terms.

The non-standard interactions are predicted by some extensions to the standard model, but no such interactions have been discovered or proven to exist. An example of an interaction which comes from R-parity violating Supersymmetry is discussed in detail in Chapter 1. Reviews of nuclear physics and the supernova model are also given in this chapter. The cross sections for neutrino flavor changing scattering in vacuum with nuclei and free nucleons are given in Chapter 1. Corrections which account for neutrinos scattering with nuclei in the core medium are given in Chapter 2. Uncertainties in the equation of state and composition of nuclear matter at high density, and the impact of these uncertainties on neutrino scattering cross sections are discussed in Chapter 2 as well. Analytical estimates of flavor changing scattering rates are calculated in Chapter 1 and a qualitative discussion of the effects on the model is then offered. Results from a one-zone core collapse numerical simulation are presented in Chapter 2. A detailed discussion of the code, and equations which describe the core are included in this chapter. Chapter 3 outlines how to include these interactions in a full simulation with neutrino transport and hydrodynamics.

In the guise of sterile neutrinos, they may even constitute the dark matter. None of these roles is, as of yet, fully understood. Aside from the observational challenges, there are significant theoretical ones. Neutrinos are known to come in at least three different flavors, each of which interacts differently with other particles. They are also known to oscillate: due to quantum mechanics, a neutrino's flavor changes in the course of its propagation. The phenomenology that emerges in dense neutrino systems as a result of flavor oscillations is a frontier topic of precision cosmology and high-energy astrophysics. It is the focal point of this dissertation. The central theme is nonlinearity. When a system is dense in neutrinos, kinetic behaviors can arise that differ dramatically from those in systems dense only in "ordinary" matter like electrons and nucleons. The key piece of microphysics in this regard is the forward scattering of neutrinos on one another, which causes the flavor evolution of any given neutrino to depend on the flavor states of all neutrinos that it crosses paths with. The chapters here explore some of the macroscopic consequences of this subtle quantum phenomenon, with applications to the lepton-asymmetric early universe, core-collapse supernovae, and sterile neutrino dark matter.

Book excerpt: Two different nuclear-medium effects are isolated using a low three-momentum transfer subsample of neutrino-carbon scattering data from the MINERvA neutrino experiment. The observed hadronic energy in charged-current [nu][mu] interactions is combined with muon kinematics to permit separation of the quasielastic and [Delta](1232) resonance processes. First, we observe a small cross section at very low energy transfer that matches the expected screening effect of long-range nucleon correlations. Second, additions to the event rate in the kinematic region between the quasielastic and [Delta] resonance processes are needed to describe the data. The data in this kinematic region also have an enhanced population of multiproton final states. Contributions predicted for scattering from a nucleon pair have both properties; the model tested in this analysis is a significant improvement but does not fully describe the data. We present the results as a double-differential cross section to enable further investigation of nuclear models. Improved description of the effects of the nuclear environment are required by current and future neutrino oscillation experiments.

Book excerpt: In this study, a dense neutrino medium such as that inside a core-collapse supernova can experience collective flavor conversion or oscillations because of the neutral-current weak interaction among the neutrinos. This phenomenon has been studied in a restricted, stationary supernova model which possesses the (spatial) spherical symmetry about the center of the supernova and the (directional) axial symmetry around the radial direction. Recently it has been shown that these spatial and directional symmetries can be broken spontaneously by collective neutrino oscillations. In this letter we analyze the neutrino flavor instabilities in a time-dependent supernova model. Our results show that collective neutrino oscillations start at approximately the same radius in both the stationary and time-dependent supernova models unless there exist very rapid variations in local physical conditions on timescales of a few microseconds or shorter. Our results also suggest that collective neutrino oscillations can vary rapidly with time in the regimes where they do occur which need to be studied in time-dependent supernova models.

Recent progress in the understanding of core collapse supernova (CCSN) and observational aspects of future detections of neutrinos from CCSN explosions are discussed. The multi-messenger astrophysics of binary neutron star merger GW170817 and its relation to EoS through tidal deformability are also presented in detail. The synthesis of elements heavier than iron in the supernova and neutron star environment by the rapid (r)-process are treated here with special emphasis on the nucleosynthesis in the ejected material from GW170817.
