Book excerpt: The final novel in the First Law Trilogy by New York Times bestseller Joe Abercrombie. Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him -- but it's going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the king of the Northmen still stands firm, and there's only one man who can stop him. His oldest friend, and his oldest enemy: it's time for the Bloody-Nine to come home. With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war. A secret struggle in which no one is safe, and no one can be trusted. As his days with a sword are far behind him, it's fortunate that he's deadly with his remaining weapons: blackmail, threats, and torture. Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is too painful an undertaking and turned his back on soldiering for a simple life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too -- and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on a man when he least expects it. The king of the Union lies on his deathbed, the peasants revolt, and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No one believes that the shadow of war is about to fall across the heart of the Union. Only the First of the Magi can save the world, but there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, than to break the First Law. . .

Book excerpt: On August 29, 1974, Mac and Muff Graham, sailors from San Diego, were brutally murdered by Buck Walker and Stephanie Stearns on the island of Palmyra, located approximately 970 nautical miles south of Hawaii. Prior to making the voyage, Muff was haunted by premonitions that the trip would end with their deaths. Unable to convince her husband that a terrible fate awaited them, against her better judgment, she reluctantly accompanied him. Arriving at the island, with death close at hand, warned by other wary sailors, Mac, seemingly secure with his firearms, refused to leave his island “paradise” despite Muff's tears and entreaties. In 1981 the remains of Muff were discovered on Palmyra Island by passing sailors. Walker and Stearns, in separate trials, were tried for her murder. After two weeks of trial, Walker was found guilty, the jury deliberating less than three hours. A month later, Stearns, defended by well known trial lawyers Vincent Bugliosi and Leonard Weinglass were acquitted. There were several factors that greatly assisted Bugliosi in obtaining his victory. Judge, Samuel King, erroneously, weighed in heavily on behalf of Stearns throughout the trial. He granted a change of venue shifting her trial from Hawaii to San Francisco. King permitted Bugliosi to amend the complaint to allege a charge of first degree murder against Stearns and later, granted his motion to dismiss the murder charge against Stearns based on the Felony/Murder rule. He permitted Bugliosi to introduce impermissible character evidence greatly favoring Stearns and prohibited Enoki from impeaching the testimony of these witnesses. Another consideration that greatly favored Stearns was Enoki's ineffective prosecution. Enoki was not up to the challenge and was totally overwhelmed by the aggressive defense put forward by Bugliosi. Enoki never understood Stearn's role in the planning and murders of the Grahams, nor did he support his witnesses when under attack by Bugliosi. To add to the confusion, neither the prosecution nor the defense understood sailing, or the sea. The above factors, along with many others set forth, when combined with the onslaught of Stearns lies and machinations, left the jury awash in confusion and misdirection; thus accounting for the erroneous verdict. FINAL ARGUMENT sets the record straight, exposing the many lies Stearns issued in pursuit of a not guilty verdict. It corrects many inaccurate quotes from the court reporter's original trial transcript and reveals how Bugliosi won a seemingly hopeless case.

Chapter One provides basic information on the nature of arbitration, including a description of its stages and types, and its benefits and limitations. Cooley defines the role, authority, and ethics requirements of the arbitrator. Chapter Two describes the prehearing functions and duties of the arbitrator, focusing on the time of initiation of the arbitration as well as the preparation stage. Chapter Three focuses on the arbitrator's hearing functions and duties. It covers such topics as the arbitrator's opening statement, handling preliminary matters, a review of basic rules of evidence, and making rulings on motions and objections. Chapter Four, on the arbitrator's post-hearing functions and duties, addresses such topics as ruling on post hearing motions, deciding the merits of the case, and drafting the award and the opinion supporting the award. In addition, tables and checklists are included in the appendices for key actions at critical stages of the arbitration process. The appendix also contains sample arbitration forms and rules from leading dispute resolution organizations, making this the most comprehensive text available for "hands-on" arbitration instruction.

Rather than concern himself with the authors as historical figures, or how The Federalist helps us understand the original intent of the framers of the Constitution, Levinson examines each essay for the political wisdom it can offer us today. In eighty-five short essays, each keyed to a different essay in The Federalist, he considers such questions as whether present generations can rethink their constitutional arrangements; how much effort we should exert to preserve America’s traditional culture; and whether The Federalist’s arguments even suggest the desirability of world government.

Where do I start to describe how it all happened? I guess I should start in the courtroom, where this particular trial took place. Following the witnesses' testimony, the prosecutor asked each of defendants the same question: "Will you take the mark?" The defendants' response will move the scales of justice and determine for each of them their fate. But more than that, it caused a few houses to be divided against themselves. For it goes beyond this courtroom; it will affect everyday life. Then the prosecuting attorney said, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury--" ***** Come and read as I tell you about these events and beyond. This is not a once-upon-a-time story. It is a compelling, edge-of-your-seat, roller-coaster ride. Hang on! In The Final Argument, it will become clear!

Book excerpt: "Grips you by the throat from beginning to end."—Cleveland Plain Dealer ALONE WITH HER NEW HUSBAND on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the bestseller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened when four people found hell in a tropical paradise. And the Sea Will Tell reconstructs the events and subsequent trial of a riveting true murder mystery, and probes into the dark heart of a serpentine scenario of death.

Book excerpt: The arrest, trial and execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1951 mesmerised an America coming to grips with the early Cold War and the anxiety aroused by the Soviet Union's testing of the atomic bomb. However, in 1965, Walter Schneir famously presented evidence that the Rosenbergs were innocent and had been framed by the FBI - a case which was brought into question in 1995 when the FBI released 3000 Soviet intelligence documents. This prompted Schneir to continue his research, which has lead to surprising and revelatory results.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume are intended to exemplify the state of experimental psycho linguistics in the middle to later 1980s. Our over riding impression is that the field has come a long way since the earlier work of the 1950s and 1960s, and that the field has emerged with a renewed strength from a difficult period in the 1970s. Not only are the theoretical issues more sharply defined and integrated with existing issues from other domains ("modularity" being one such example), but the experimental techniques employed are much more sophisticated, thanks to the work of numerous psychologists not necessarily interested in psycholinguistics, and thanks to improving technologies unavailable a few years ago (for instance, eye-trackers). We selected papers that provide a coherent, overall picture of existing techniques and issues. The volume is organized much as one might organize an introductory linguistics course - beginning with sound and working "up" to mean ing. Indeed, the first paper, Rebecca Treiman's, begins with considera tion of syllable structure, a phonological consideration, and the last, Alan Garnham's, exemplifies some work on the interpretation of pro nouns, a semantic matter. In between are found works concentrating on morphemes, lexical structures, and syntax. The cross-section represented in this volume is by necessity incom plete, since we focus only on experimental work directed at under standing how adults comprehend and produce language. We do not include any works on language acquisition, first or second.
