Book excerpt: The effect of injecting a secondary gas stream at a rearward facing slot into a supersonic air flow was examined. A small Mach 3 wind tunnel was constructed and initially tested with no step present. A slot permitting injection of a secondary gas, parallel to the main air flow, at the wall was then installed. The step height is 0.121 in. with a slot opening of 0.064 in. The secondary gas can be heated and its flow rate varied. Air is the secondary fluid used in the experiments described herein. The absolute injection temperature is between 1.04 and 1.20 of the primary stream total temperature. The ratio, M, of the mass velocity in the secondary stream to that in the primary stream is in the range from zero to 0.16, corresponding to a maximum Mach number of 0.95. Schlieren photographs are presented and static wall pressure and adiabatic wall temperature measurements are described. The film cooling effectiveness is found to stay close to the value one for a distance of approximately 8 slot heights and to fall off rapidly downstream from this point. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of two-dimensional tangential-slot injection into a turbulent boundary layer at a freestream Mach number of 2.4 has been conducted. Nearly adiabatic surface temperatures were maintained during all tests. Static and pitot pressure profiles at four stations downstream of the slot were obtained. Skin friction was measured at the last three stations with a self-nulling balance. Schlieren photographs of the flow field were also obtained. Most of the data were obtained with slot Mach numbers of 0.31 and 0.66 corresponding to slot pressure less than and equal to stream static pressure, respectively. For the latter matched-pressure case, tangential slot injection reduced the surface shear at the three measuring stations by about 60 to 20 percent for increasing downstream distances from the slot of 12 to 28 slot heights. However, for the other case where slot pressure was less than stream static pressure, the effect of injection was to increase the shear by about 90 percent at the last downstream station of 28 slot heights. This increase in shear is attributed to the rapid acceleration of the low speed injectant stream by the high speed main stream and the increasing pressure through the recompression zone which is absent for the matched pressure case.

Book excerpt: The shroud wall temperatures during operation with and without an afterburner are predicted analytically by using a wall heat balance of hot gas radiation, coolant convection, internal and external radiation, and external free convection. The Hatch-Papell film-cooling correlation predicts an adiabatic wall temperature which is used as the driving temperature for the coolant heat transfer. Ejectors with nozzle area ratios from 1.65 to 2. 75 and ejector length to primary diameter ratios from 1.63 to 1.95 were tested. Tests were conducted at nozzle pressure ratios ranging from 2.0 to 6.3, primary total temperatures from 861 to 1939 K (1550 [degree] to 3490 [degree] R), and corrected secondary weight-flow ratios from 0.027 to 0.088. The predictions yielded reasonably good results throughout the range of conditions tested.
