Wade, it is evident that the ideologies of "choices" and "rights," which have publicly framed reproductive politics in North America since the landmark legal decision, have been inadequate in making sense of the topic's complexities. In Reproductive Acts, Heather Latimer investigates what contemporary fiction and film can tell us about the divisive nature of these politics, and demonstrates how fictional representations of reproduction allow for readings of reproductive politics that are critical of the terms of the debate itself. More nudity, kinky sex, and queer content are increasingly deployed in remakes to attract, and to titillate, a new generation of viewers. While sex in this book refers to increased erotic content, this discussion also incorporates an investigation of other uses of sex and gender to help a remake appear woke and abreast of the zeitgeist including feminist reimaginings and ‘girl power’ make-overs, updated gender roles, female cast-swaps, queer retellings, and repositioned gazes. Though increased sex is often considered a sign of modernity, gratuitous displays of female nudity can sometimes be interpreted as sexist and anachronistic, in turn highlighting that progressiveness around sexuality in contemporary media is not a linear story. Also examined therefore, are remakes that reduce the sexual content to appear cutting-edge and cognizant of the demands of today’s audiences.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation considers and evaluates French auteurist cinema in two contexts: first, in terms of the 1950s/1960s, a period during which the politique des auteurs became a salient part of film criticism nationally and internationally, and second, in terms of contemporary cinema in France today, where the concept of auteur, though never completely forsaken since the Nouvelle Vague, has experienced a revival. A large amount of existing critical literature discusses various aspects of Robert Bresson and Jean-Luc Godard's works, which coincide with the emergence and espousal of the politique, but critics and historians rarely consider the sexual politics of their cinema in much detail. With that in mind, I look closely at a selection of their films, which differ from other auteur works of the period in that they attempt to problematize gender difference and sexuality. The second part of the study examines the cinema of Catherine Breillat and François Ozon, whose works destabilize notions of gender (masculinity, femininity) and sexuality in an even more daring and explicit fashion. Their films, seldom discussed in the context of the politique des auteurs, will be examined as contemporary examples of auteurist cinema, but also in relation to the auteur cinema of the 1950s/1960s, in an attempt to determine both the continuity of the cinema of auteurs and the radical differences between these two periods of French film history.

Book excerpt: Authoring a film adaptation of a literary source not only requires a media conversion but also a transformation as a result of the differing dramatic demands of cinema. The most critical central step in this transformation of a literary source to the screen is the writing of the screenplay. The screenplay usually serves to recruit producers, director, and actors; to attract capital investment; and to give focus to the conception and production of the film project. Often undergoing multiple revisions prior to production, the screenplay represents the crucial decisions of writer and director that will determine how and to what end the film will imitate or depart from its original source. Authorship in Film Adaptation is an accessible, provocative text that opens up new areas of discussion on the central process of adaptation surrounding the screenplay and screenwriter-director collaboration. In contrast to narrow binary comparisons of literary source text and film, the twelve essays in this collection also give attention to the underappreciated role of the screenplay and film pre-production that can signal the primary intention for a film.
