Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Pedagogy - Pedagogic Psychology, grade: B+, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, course: Master of Education, language: English, abstract: Filial piety is the core value in Chinese culture. This value influences Chinese students to have high academic achievement. Unfortunately, students with low academic self-efficacy should motivate themselves to study. There were few researchers to examine the relationship between filial piety, self-efficacy and motivation. The present research explores and examines the model of these three variables. 285 participants have been invited to finish the questionnaire. AMS-C28 motivation scale, MJSES self-efficacy scale and filial piety belief scale have been used in the study. The results show that filial piety correlates to academic self-efficacy and academic motivation directly. Also the results confirm the idea that filial piety is importance to Chinese student in learning.

Book Synopsis School Systems, Parent Behavior, and Academic Achievement by : Emma Sorbring
Download or read book School Systems, Parent Behavior, and Academic Achievement written by Emma Sorbring and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes an international and multidisciplinary approach to understanding students’ academic achievement. It does so by integrating educational literature with developmental psychology and family studies perspectives. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a particular country: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, or the United States. It describes the country as a cultural context, examines the current school system and parenting in light of the school system, and provides empirical evidence from that country regarding links between parenting and students’ academic achievement. The book highlights similarities and differences in education and parenting across these nine countries - all varying widely in socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect schools and families. The volume contributes to greater understanding of links between parenting and academic performance in different cultural groups. It sheds light on how school systems and parenting are embedded in larger cultural settings that have implications for students’ educational experiences and academic achievement. As two of the most important contexts in which children and adolescents spend time, understanding how schools and families jointly contribute to academic achievement holds promise for advancing the international agenda of promoting quality education for all.

Book Synopsis Progress in Asian Social Psychology by : Kuo-Shu Yang
Download or read book Progress in Asian Social Psychology written by Kuo-Shu Yang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents ways of thinking dramatically different from mainstream psychology, which is seen by many as primarily a product of Western civilization. Asian social psychologists in this edited collection apply Asian perspectives to issues of major concern in their societies, including parental beliefs about shame and moral socialization in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States; achievement motivation in Taiwan and the United States; and the effects of school violence on the psychological adjustment of Korean adolescents. Other chapters examine the role of social psychologists in Confucian societies, and group dynamics in Japan. The authors believe psychological research using an indigenous approach will enable Asian as well as non-Asian psychologists to understand the cognitions and behaviors of Asian people more accurately. Scholars and students interested in Asian psychology, social, cultural and cross-cultural psychology will find this volume of interest.

Now, more than ever, there is a great interest and need within the West to better understand the psychological and social processes that characterize the Chinese people. The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Psychology is the first book of its kind - a comprehensive and commanding review of Chinese psychology, covering areas of human functioning with unparalleled sophistication and complexity. In 42 chapters, leading authorities cite and integrate both English and Chinese-language research in topic areas ranging from the socialization of children, mathematics achievement, emotion, bilingualism and Chinese styles of thinking to Chinese identity, personal relationships, leadership processes and psychopathology. With all chapters accessibly written by the leading researchers in their respective fields, the reader of this volume will learn how and why China has developed in the way it has, and how it is likely to develop. In addition, the book shows how a better understanding of a culture so different to our own can tell us so much about our own culture and sense of identity. A book of extraordinary breadth, The Oxford Handbook of Chinese Psychology will become the essential sourcebook for any scholar or practitioner attempting to understand the psychological functioning of the world's largest ethnic group.
