Book excerpt: “A powerful, beautifully written dystopian tale concerning four inhabitants of a gigantic but dying artificial habitat.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review A drug-addled boy, living in dank recesses, sets out in an ancient car to find his ex, who has mysteriously vanished. A privileged girl, obsessed with the past and exiled by her esteemed father, learns more about her long-lost ancestors than she ever could have wished for. An old man, on his hundredth birthday, deserts his quiet post as an elevator operator, climbing the great shaft in hopes of seeing the fabled topmost level before he dies. And a fisherman, seeking answers to why his once-vibrant wife is now chronically ailing and wasting away, begins a quest to find and confront the god of all gods. They are four inhabitants of a strange, crumbling realm, and in this novel their stories intersect and wrap around each other like subterranean tunnels—revealing deeply disturbing truths about the artificial world in which they live. “A disquieting, claustrophobic, compelling hybrid of China Miéville and J.G. Ballard.” —Peter Watts, author of Blindsight “A great read, crackling with invention, energy, and suspense.” —Quill & Quire
Book Synopsis Lymphatic Filariasis by : Trilok Chandra Goel
Download or read book Lymphatic Filariasis written by Trilok Chandra Goel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides up-to-date information on lymphatic filariasis supported with abundant images, tables and algorithms. It is a first such monograph on a disease that has varied presentations which are complete clinical entities, such as chyluria, hydrocele, elephantiasis, etc. This book consists of three parts, parasitology, acute clinical manifestations and chronic presentations of the disease. Approximately 120 million people are infected with lymphatic filariasis in tropical and subtropical countries. About a third of these suffer clinical consequences of this infection, and many are seriously disfigured. India, Indonesia and Nigeria are the most endemic countries in the world. In spite of Global Control Program of WHO, filariasis continues to be a significant medical challenge and current efforts underway will take a long time to bring it under control. Lymphatic Filariasis is meant for general surgeons, physicians, urologists and plastic surgeons, including the postgraduate students. Useful for epidemiologists, internists, and those involved in filariasis prevention programs.
Download or read book The Filaria written by Thomas R. Klei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filarial nematodes constitute and important group of human pathogens in tropical regions of the world. Diseases associated with these worms are generally separated into two categories: filariasis, caused by infections of lymphatic dwelling parasites and onchocerciasis, or river blindness, caused by infections of Onchocerca volvulus. Other filariae specifically infect humans and it is likely that zoonotic filarial infections may alter the outcome of infections with human parasites. The chapters in this book will cover concepts that, in most instances, overlap all of these parasites as well as focus on new and emerging ideas. The Filaria, volume five of World Class Parasites, is written for researchers, students and scholars who enjoy reading research that has a major impact on human health, or agricultural productivity, and against which we have no satisfactory defense. It is intended to supplement more formal texts that cover taxonomy, life cycles, morphology, vector distribution, symptoms and treatment. It integrates vector, pathogen and host biology and celebrates the diversity of approach that comprises modern parasitological research.
Book Synopsis Lymphatic Filariasis by : Brij Kishore Tyagi
Download or read book Lymphatic Filariasis written by Brij Kishore Tyagi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is a group of human and animal infectious diseases caused by nematode parasites of the order Filariidae. Often neglected, it is one of the oldest and the most debilitating tropical diseases (NTDs), transmitted from human to human by mosquitoes bites, particularly the brown black mosquito known as Culex quinquifasciatus. LF is a major public health problem in many parts of the tropics, especially India, which accounts for as much as 40% of total global cases. As a leading cause of permanent and long-term disability worldwide, the parasite infection imposes a severe physical and socioeconomic burden. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.4 billion people live in high-risk areas – 120 million of which are already infected with LF, including 22 million children below the age of 15 and about 76 million who suffer from damaged lymphatic and renal systems. India has made great strides toward eliminating the disease, and these advances are of global significance. They include early diagnosis mechanisms, vaccine product development, detection of parasites in the vector, and studies on parasite evolution trends in nature as warning signals. Reports on the successes and failures are needed to enable measures to be taken to avoid disaster and ensure a smooth transition from endemicity in India to the elimination of lymphatic filariasis by 2020. This book, which gathers highly original contributions on various subjects related to lymphatic filariasis, discusses the latest scientific research that will help the nation to achieve this milestone. It also serves as a guide to many other countries struggling against this highly debilitating and incapacitating disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase of immigrant population in developed countries (mainly in Europe and North America) together with an important increase of international travel worldwide are the two most important causes that have contributed to the introduction and diagnosis of imported/tropical infectious diseases in these countries. These factors have had an important impact in developed countries in both social and economic aspects. Imported Infectious Diseases focuses not only on describing the infections, but also in evaluating the current epidemiology, the economic and social impact and the possibility to apply immunization measures and vaccines. The main purpose of this book is to give an overview of the current most important and frequent imported infectious diseases in developed countries. The first chapter informs about the medical services that are being offered to the immigrants in the main developed countries depending on the legal situation. Following chapters describe the main surveillance systems for these kinds of diseases, mainly in Europe and North America. Finally, remaining chapters contain sections on epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Author Peter J. Hotez highlights a new opportunity to control and perhaps eliminate these ancient scourges, through alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships to create a successful environment for mass drug administration and product development activities. Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases also Addresses the myriad changes that have occurred in the field since the previous edition. Describes how NTDs have affected impoverished populations for centuries, changing world history. Considers the future impact of alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships. Book excerpt: “Beautifully written and morally ambivalent, this complex tale will appeal to readers of Gene Wolfe and China Miéville.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review The city is crumbling. Clouds over Nowy Solum have not parted in a hundred years. Gods have deserted their temples. In the last days of a dying city, the decadent chatelaine chooses a forbidden lover, separating twin outcasts and setting them on independent trajectories that might finally bring down the palace. Then, screaming from the skies, a lone god reappears and a limbless prophet is carried through South Gate, into Nowy Solum, with a message for all: Beyond the city, something ancient and monumental has come awake. “A breathtaking success of a fantasy story. Find yourself a copy, brew some strong coffee, and allow your mind to be blown.” —The Arcanist “Reading it is like waking up in the wrong bed, in the wrong apartment, under the wrong sun. The strangest part is the insidious way the strangeness of Hayward’s world becomes familiar as the story progresses . . . By turns surreal, macabre and stunningly violent, The Fecund’s Melancholy Daughter is dreamlike in its strangeness and complexity. Like a dream, it is difficult to define and difficult to shake.” —The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

Book Synopsis Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infections by : Sunit Kumar Singh
Download or read book Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infections written by Sunit Kumar Singh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 2365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging and re-emerging pathogens pose several challenges to diagnosis, treatment, and public health surveillance, primarily because pathogen identification is a difficult and time-consuming process due to the “novel” nature of the agent. Proper identification requires a wide array of techniques, but the significance of these diagnostics is anticipated to increase with advances in newer molecular and nanobiotechnological interventions and health information technology. Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infections covers the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, clinical features, and public health risks posed by new viral and microbial infections. The book includes detailed coverage on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, development of various diagnostic tools, diagnostic assays and their limitations, key research priorities, and new technologies in infection diagnostics. Volume 1 addresses viral and parasitic infections, while volume 2 delves into bacterial and mycotic infections. Human Emerging and Re-emerging Infections is an invaluable resource for researchers in parasitologists, microbiology, Immunology, neurology and virology, as well as clinicians and students interested in understanding the current knowledge and future directions of infectious diseases.
