Book Synopsis Figures of Interpretation by : B.A.S.S. Meier-Lorente-Muth-Duchêne
Download or read book Figures of Interpretation written by B.A.S.S. Meier-Lorente-Muth-Duchêne and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book assembles 31 portraits of people who interpret languages, cultures and situations, and offers graphic interpretations of their collective experience. Their individual stories are part of the larger history of interpreters, interpretation and interpretive readings, and they demonstrate how language intersects with race, class, gender and geopolitical inequalities. The book allows the unexpected to unfold by passing control from the writers to the reader, who will see connections and ruptures unfold between space, time and class while never losing sight of the materiality of living. Together and individually, the portraits tell a powerful story about the structure of contemporary society and the hierarchical distributions of power that permeate our lives.

Book Synopsis Interpretation and Uses of Medical Statistics by : Leslie Daly
Download or read book Interpretation and Uses of Medical Statistics written by Leslie Daly and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 the first edition of this book introduced the concepts of statistics and their medical application to readers with no formal training in this area. While retaining this basic aim, the authors have expanded the coverage in each subsequent edition to keep pace with the increasing use and sophistication of statistics in medical research. This fifth edition has undergone major restructuring, with some sections completely rewritten; it is now more logically organized and more user friendly (with the addition of 'summary boxes' throughout the text). It incorporates new statistical techniques and approaches that have made an appearance since the last edition. In addition, some chapters or chapter headings are specifically marked to signify material that is more difficult than the material in which it is embedded - such sections or chapters can be omitted at first reading. Several new chapters have been added . "Associations: Chance, Confounded and Causal?" explains without any formulae the concepts underlying confounding, confidence intervals and p values, and the interpretation of associations observed in research investigations. Another new chapter considers sample size calculations in some detail and provides, in addition to the relevant formulae, useful tables that should give the researcher an indication of the order of magnitude of the number of subjects he or she might require in different situations.
Book Synopsis Interpretation Theory by : Paul Ricoeur
Download or read book Interpretation Theory written by Paul Ricoeur and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four essays that make up this volume are based upon and expand the lectures Ricoeur delivered at Texas Christian University, 27-30 November 1973, as their Centennial Lectures. They may be read as separate essays, but they may also be read as step by step approximations of a solution to a single problem, that of understanding language at the level of such productions as poems, narratives and essays, whether literary or philosophical. In other words, the central problem at stake in these four essays is that of works; in particular, that of language as a work.

Book Synopsis Interpretation and Its Objects by : Andreea Deciu Ritivoi
Download or read book Interpretation and Its Objects written by Andreea Deciu Ritivoi and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects twenty-one original essays that discuss Michael Krausz’s distinctive and provocative contribution to the theory of interpretation. At the beginning of the book Krausz offers a synoptic review of his central claims, and he concludes with a substantive essay that replies to scholars from the United States, England, Germany, India, Japan, and Australia. Krausz’s philosophical work centers around a distinction that divides interpreters of cultural achievements into two groups. Singularists assume that for any object of interpretation only one single admissible interpretation can exist. Multiplists assume that for some objects of interpretation more than one interpretation is admissible. A central question concerns the ontological entanglements involved in interpretive activity. Domains of application include works of art and music, as well as literary, historical, legal and religious texts. Further topics include truth commissions, ethnocentrism and interpretations across cultures.

Book Synopsis Understanding The New Statistics by : Geoff Cumming
Download or read book Understanding The New Statistics written by Geoff Cumming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to introduce the new statistics - effect sizes, confidence intervals, and meta-analysis - in an accessible way. It is chock full of practical examples and tips on how to analyze and report research results using these techniques. The book is invaluable to readers interested in meeting the new APA Publication Manual guidelines by adopting the new statistics - which are more informative than null hypothesis significance testing, and becoming widely used in many disciplines. Accompanying the book is the Exploratory Software for Confidence Intervals (ESCI) package, free software that runs under Excel and is accessible at www.thenewstatistics.com. The book’s exercises use ESCI's simulations, which are highly visual and interactive, to engage users and encourage exploration. Working with the simulations strengthens understanding of key statistical ideas. There are also many examples, and detailed guidance to show readers how to analyze their own data using the new statistics, and practical strategies for interpreting the results. A particular strength of the book is its explanation of meta-analysis, using simple diagrams and examples. Understanding meta-analysis is increasingly important, even at undergraduate levels, because medicine, psychology and many other disciplines now use meta-analysis to assemble the evidence needed for evidence-based practice. The book’s pedagogical program, built on cognitive science principles, reinforces learning: Boxes provide "evidence-based" advice on the most effective statistical techniques. Numerous examples reinforce learning, and show that many disciplines are using the new statistics. Graphs are tied in with ESCI to make important concepts vividly clear and memorable. Opening overviews and end of chapter take-home messages summarize key points. Exercises encourage exploration, deep understanding, and practical applications. This highly accessible book is intended as the core text for any course that emphasizes the new statistics, or as a supplementary text for graduate and/or advanced undergraduate courses in statistics and research methods in departments of psychology, education, human development , nursing, and natural, social, and life sciences. Researchers and practitioners interested in understanding the new statistics, and future published research, will also appreciate this book. A basic familiarity with introductory statistics is assumed.

Book excerpt: In recent decades the explosive growth of globalization and regional integration has fuelled parallel growth in multilingual conferences. This book seeks to fill that need by providing a structured syllabus and an overview of interpretation accompanied by exercises in various aspects of the art. It is meant to serve as a practical guide for interpreters and as a complement to interpreter training programs in the classroom and online, particularly those for students preparing for conference interpreting in international governmental and business settings. This expanded second edition includes additional exercises and provides direct links to a variety of web-based resources and practice speeches, also including additional language combinations.

Book Synopsis Neuropsychological Interpretation of Objective Psychological Tests by : Charles J. Golden
Download or read book Neuropsychological Interpretation of Objective Psychological Tests written by Charles J. Golden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-04-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a compendium of the possible interpretations that can be used with each of a variety of common tests usually included in a neuropsychological test battery. The first chapter discusses some of the pitfalls and cautions when comparing tests, while the second chapter examines administrative and scoring issues which may be unclear or unavailable for a given test. The remainder and heart of the book is the analysis of the interpretative issues for each of the tests. Each chapter is designed to present in a succinct format day-to-day interpretative strategies and questions for each test. The organization of the text allows the user to get to the core interpretative issues quickly so that there is no need to wade through unnecessary expositions. These strategies and interpretative issues will in turn generate questions for the examiner to address and can lead to the accurate analysis of each test, as well as indicating the need for additional tests to be included in a given assessment. Not all available neuropsychological tests have been included; however, these are believed to be a representative sample of the tests in use. Many of the interpretative strategies cited can be used with other tests that focus on similar skills and abilities. The book is intended for beginners in the field as well as individuals who have limited experience. The majority of practitioners who use neuropsychological tests only occasionally will also find the information of great use.
