Download or read book The Figaro Trilogy written by Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-10-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barber of Seville * The Marriage of Figaro * The Guilty Mother Eighteenth-century France produced only one truly international theatre star, Beaumarchais, and only one name, Figaro, to put with Don Quixote or D'Artagnan in the ranks of popular myth. But who was Figaro? Not the impertinent valet of the operas of Mozart or Rossini, but both the spirit of resistance to oppression and a bourgeois individualist like his creator. The three plays in which he plots and schemes chronicle the slide of the ancien régime into revolution but also chart the growth of Beaumarchais' humanitarianism. They are also exuberant theatrical entertainments, masterpieces of skill, invention, and social satire which helped shape the direction of French theatre for a hundred years. This lively new translation catches all the zest and energy of the most famous valet in French literature. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Book Synopsis Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte by : Charles Ford
Download or read book Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte written by Charles Ford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment explains how Mozart's music for Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte 'sounds' the intentions of Da Ponte's characters and their relationships with one another. Mozart, by way of the infinitely generative and beautiful logic of the sonata principle, did not merely interpret Da Ponte's characterizations but lent them temporal, musical forms. Charles Ford's analytic interpretation of these musical forms concerns processes and structures in detail and at medium- to long-term levels. He addresses the music of a wide range of arias and ensembles, and develops original ways to interpret the two largely overlooked operatic genres of secco recitative and finales. Moreover, Ford presents a new method by which to relate musical details directly to philosophical concepts, and thereby, the music of the operas to the inwardly contradictory thinking of the European Enlightenment. This involves close readings of late eighteenth-century understandings of 'man' and nature, self and other, morality and transgression, and gendered identities and sexuality, with particular reference to contemporary writers, especially Goethe, Kant, Laclos, Rousseau, Sade, Schiller, Sterne and Wollstonecraft. The concluding discussion of the implied futures of the operas argues that their divided sexualities, which are those of the Enlightenment as a whole, have come to form our own unquestioned assumptions about gender differences and sexuality. This, along with the elegant and eloquent precision of Mozart's music, is why Figaro, Giovanni and Così still maintain their vital immediacy for audiences today.
Book Synopsis Le nozze di Figaro by : Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Download or read book Le nozze di Figaro written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and published by Alma Books. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wells introduces the opera with a high-spirited account of the action-packed career of the author, in many respects the prototype of Figaro himself. Basil Deane explores the score: he shows that Mozart's characters are illuminated here not so much in soliloquies but in their reactions to each other. Composer Stephen Oliver discusses how the comedy exists not just in the words but, essentially, in the music. The full Italian text is given, with a note on the order of scenes in Act Three and the alternative passages Mozart wrote for the 1789 revival. The classic translation of E.J. Dent is an excellent way to get to know the twists and turns of the plot and the stylish wit of da Ponte's innuendos.Contents: A Society Marriage, John Wells; A Musical Commentary, Basil Deane; Music and Comedy in 'The Marriage of Figaro, Stephen Oliver; Beaumarchais's Characters; Le nozze di Figaro: Libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte; The Marriage of Figaro: English version by Edward J. Book Synopsis The Story of Figaro by : Laura Luszczek
Download or read book The Story of Figaro written by Laura Luszczek and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura’s love of horses began when she was barely four years old, but it wasn’t until she got her very own black stallion that she truly fell in love. From the beginning, she was determined to get Figaro for her own—saving up her money and then arguing with the seller who was afraid to sell such a headstrong horse to such a young girl. But Laura was used to handling tough colts on the track and pleaded her case: “You showed him to me for a reason. I was destined for Figaro to be my horse,” she told the seller. After lots of pleading, she took home her prize. She trained him, grew with him, and bonded with him—becoming one in mind and spirit with her horse. As time went on, she came to realize that there was an unknown chapter in his life that made him act up with some people. His judge of character was pretty much dead on. Laura and Figaro may not be in the history books as champion athletes, but they brought out the best in each other and showed each other the meaning of unconditional love.

Book Synopsis Aristide of Le Figaro by : Mary Munro-Hill
Download or read book Aristide of Le Figaro written by Mary Munro-Hill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it true that French people enjoy reading grammar articles over their coffee and croissants? Can matters of language really be so interesting and absorbing? For thirty years, Aristide composed his Usage et grammaire and Divertissements grammaticaux for one of France’s foremost daily newspapers, Le Figaro. His fans avidly read his weekly chroniques de langue, corresponding with him and asking him questions, which he delighted in answering. His linguistic writings, topical, witty and elegant, are both entertaining and instructive. This book on Aristide’s work will be appreciated by lovers of the French language the world over. Although written in English, it is peppered throughout with extracts from Aristide’s weekly rubriques. Aristide stood in the long tradition of French grammarians, some purist and others relatively laxist. Bernard Pivot described him as one who was «sévère pour une faute de français, indulgent pour un français en faute».
