Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Cotton Insects The cotton dauber, Lygus hesperus Knight (fig. 1) is %2 inch long and one third as broad. The females are straw-colored, the males darker with red and brown markings on the wings, body, and appendages. The intensity of these colors varies considerably. The overwinter'ing males are nearly mahogany, the females reddish. The greenish-yellow, heart shaped mark between the bases of the wings helps to identify this insect on cotton. They are more readily observed during the cooler hours when they are less active. The long, slender mouth parts' are used to pierce the soft tissues and suck the sap, and the eggs are forced into this tissue with a. Saberlike ovipositor. A very small elliptical opening is left on the surface of the stem when an egg is deposited, through which the young nymph emerges after 7 to 12 days of incubation. There are five nymphal instars before the adult appears. The nymphs (fig. 1, B, C, and D) are pale green in color with red on the antennae; the third, -fourth, and fifth instars have circular black spots on the upper surface. Cotton growers sometimes mistake these for aphids, but they are much more active when disturbed, and the red antennae as well as the more slender bodies distinguish them from aphids. Received for publication March 13, 1941. Associate in Entomology in the Experiment Station. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious and Beneficial, Insects of California Insect devastation costs the United States millions of dollars annu ally. California bears her full share, two millions being a reasonable estimate. Wise and timely application of well-known remedies would save much of this constant loss. Mr. E. O. Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California. Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipa tions were greatly exceeded, and very soon, the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Species of Mealy Bugs The systematic literature dealing with certain groups of the Coccidae or scale insects is extremely unsatisfactory, this condition being especially pronounced in the case of those groups commonly called the "soft scales." The present author (4) has stated in an earlier paper that ." . . of the nearly 100 species of mealy bugs thus far described from North America, including some 35 from California, not more than three or four are recognizable at all on the basis of the published descriptions if taken apart from their typical host and their type locality," nor at the time of the present writing does this statement need any extensive modification. A few species have been described since the statement was originally made and to some of these it may not apply, but so far as the species known at that time arc concerned, the additional claim may safely be made that even under the optimum conditions cited, the identification of many of our species can not be accomplished with reasonable certainty. The actuating motive of the present paper has been the hope of remedying this condition as far as may be for those species of mealy bugs occurring in California. However, progress toward this goal has been made possible only by the utilization of certain methods not ordinarily employed, at least by American entomologists, and by the emphasizing of certain morphological features of which some have been entirely overlooked and of which the full significance of none seems at any time to have been realized. The scope of the paper has therefore been extended to include an explanation of these methods and a description of these morphological features. The restriction of the paper to those species occurring in California has not been due to any desire to keep within the boundaries of some artificially defined political unit nor to any belief that the California mealy-bug fauna is at all separable as a group from that of the rest of North America. The limitations imposed have been purely those of convenience. It so happens that most of the species known from west of Colorado and New Mexico have been described from California and that the types of these are for the most part in western collections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coccidae of California: A Descriptive List of the Different Scale Insects, Found in and Reported From California About sixteen years ago the State Board of Horticulture published a list of the Coccidse (scale insects) of California, giving some twenty-species found in the State. At that time comparatively little was known, by the residents of the State, about scale bugs or the amount of injury that could be caused by them; yet, to-day, there is no other single family of insects that is as important to the horticulturists of the world as are these minute creatures, and we can not know too much about them. As a group they are very unattractive to the average entomologist, and even more so to the average horticulturist, yet a knowledge of the species and the best known methods of combating their attacks is a very essential part of the education of every successful fruit-grower. Fruit-growing is a competitive business, and the successful grower must avail himself of every opportunity to gain knowledge that will be of assistance to him in his business; therefore, it has been deemed advisable to bring before his notice the following list of species occurring in California, with illustrations and short descriptions of the more important varieties, in order to enable the grower to recognize and distinguish between the destructive species and those that are not so destructive. Since the first list was published, and especially during the last few years, there has been a very active period among the growers, orchardists, nurserymen, and those having greenhouse interests, to gain a knowledge of scale insects. This activity has not been prompted by a love of the study of this particular branch of entomology, but purely as a business proposition, for these seemingly insignificant insects are capable of causing an enormous loss to the orchard, vineyard, nursery, or field in which they have gained a foothold. It must be remembered that each scale insect, after it has settled on the trunk, branch, or leaf of its particular host plant, virtually turns itself into an automatic pump and extracts the sap which is so vital to the life and growth of the tree. Usually the damage is done before the infestation is discovered, as many of our growers are absolutely without the slightest knowledge of scale insects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fig: Its History, Culture, and Curing, With a Descriptive Catalogue of the Known Varieties of Figs Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith, and to recommend for publication as a bulletin of this division, the manuscript of an article on The Fig: Its History, Culture, and Curing, with a descriptive catalogue of the known varieties of figs, prepared by Dr. Gustav Eisen, of San Francisco, Cal. Dr. Eisen is too well known as an author of high standing to need any introduction to the horticultural world. His name carries with it a guaranty of the value of this, his latest work. The recent successful introduction of the blastophaga into the fig-growing sections of the United States by the Department of Agriculture almost certainly assures the production of first-class Smyrna figs, which will doubtless greatly encourage and stimulate the industry, and thereby create an increase in the demand for reliable literature on the subject. This comprehensive treatise contains information of value to the scientific and practical fruit grower never before published in the form in which it is here presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Spoilage Diseases of Figs The fig was one of the first of the typical semitropical fruits of the Mediterranean region to be introduced into California. For tree growth and fruit production it found itself perfectly at home in an entirely congenial habitat. So long as the fruit was used for local or home consumption, and particularly while the comparatively disease free Black Mission3 variety predominated, the fig was considered almost immune to pests and diseases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Fig Industry: With a Chapter on Fig Caprification; Written for the Annual Report of the California State Board of Agriculture for 1891 In Tripoli fig trees grow on the plains as well as on the mountains; the more they are exposed to the sun the better they prosper. They are found in rolling and level land, both of which are adapted to their growth. It is customary in this country to plant fig trees in either white clayey soil or in a blackish soil - the latter not being good for other kinds of trees. In France the fig grows in an almost wild state in many places. On many an old wall small fig trees are to be seen, and on many a road bank they are the trees most frequently to be seen. In country farm yards, innkeepers' gardens, and stable-yards the fig tree is invariably present, and very often as a solitary specimen. It would be difficult to find a garden of any description in southern France without a fig tree. In Italy many varieties are cultivated. Usually the fig is planted in company with other fruit trees - the olive, almond, and others - but fig orchards where figs alone are grown may be found at Lecce and other places, and in such cases the trees must be planted at such a distance apart that when they reach their fullest development they may not come in contact with each other. In many places it is the custom to alternate the fig, almond, and olive, so that each fig tree may be iso lated. The introduction of the fig into Italy antedates authentic history, and is lost in the misty depths of tradition. Pliny refers to a tree which existed long anterior to the founding of Rome, under which the people of that city were wont to assemble to discuss the topics of the day' years thereafter. Tradition claims this tree to have been that under which Remus and Romulus were found, and in commemoration thereof it was preserved.
