Years are not a very long period in the history of a nation, much less in that of the world, yet what mighty events may be crowded into them - what vast changes made in the social, political, and educa lienal condition of a peeplel Looking back, for instance, upon the England 'of half a century ago, we have a retrospect which presents as strong a contrast to the present time as the infancy of an individual affords to the same person's mature years. So rapid has been the progress oi the nation in mental development and political cnfranchisement that men not yet old may look back upon the days of their boyhood as curiously and as wonderingly. JOHN CAS3ELL AND 1118 LITERARY STAFF. Siiortly after I had settled myself in London I was introduced to the lato John Cassoll, whoso namo was at that timo "familiar in the mouth as heusehold words." It met the eye at every turn; on cvory dead wall and hoarding; in the advertisement pages of every publication. Though it may be doubted whether it would ovor have been known--oxcept by such brief and cireumseribed fame as may bo won by not very brilliant oratory in the advocacy of total abstinence from aleohelic beverages--if ho had not boon favoured in no ordinary degree by fortune, he was, in somo respects, a remarkable man. Born at Manchester in 1817, in a lowly position, he was entirely self-educated, and had worked for years as a earponter before he set out upon that lecturing tour in the provinces which was his first introduction to public life. The earnestness which he evinced in the cause with which he thus becamo henourably associated won him a wife and a fortune. His connexion with tho total abstinenco movement was a pood foundation for the establishment i, an extensive business in tea and coffee, and his wareheuse in Fenchureh Street, under the ablo management of Mr. Smith, soon became as famous as his publishing emporinm in IJolle Suuvugo Yard. Joha Cassell'8 teas and Co fToes were advertised in tho boldest type, on the cover of every muguxinv, in the columns of every newspaper, in immense postera, that everywhere met the eye, in conjunction with Chhhcivh Family Paper and Ctiimell'n Papular Khealor. Both publications had an extensive circulation, and the value of the latter in the promotion of self-education umong the masses has hven acknowledged in public by more than one of our leading statesmen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years' Recollections Fayette City, or Cookstown, owing to the great predominance of Southern sympathizers residing there at that period, which marked the closing scenes of the great rebellion, was called Little Richmond. Loyal hearts were few. The terms Abolitionist and Lincoln ite were applied with hatred to the few loyal unionists who were brave enough to express their endorsement of the policies of the great emancipator, Abraham Lincoln, and the perpetuation of the union. About eight o'clock in the evening of the day above mentioned, a loyal, dyed-in-the-wool republican citizen met a life long friend on Main Street and proudly said to him, There is another abolitionist down at our house, but he arrived just one hour too late to vote for Lincoln. That loyal republican was my father, and the abolitionist referred to was myself. In honor of the event, and of the great man who was on that day elected for the second time as President of the United States, I was christened Arthur Abraham Lincoln Faulkner. In spite of the lengthy appellation, and the ills and accidents inci dent to life's early advancement, I grew into a curly haired child, my mother's joy, my father's pride and, being the youngest of ten chil dren, the household pet. That fact must not be regarded as intended in extenuation of any future follies or misdeeds which may become a part of this story, as I shall attempt to truthfully depict the most important occurrences in my life without regard to fear of criticism or hope of commendation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Brown's father on the day of his birth, May 9, 1800, wrote "John was born one hundred years after his great grandfather. Nothing else very uncommon." Many years later came the 1856 Pottawatomie Massacre, where his uncommon convictions led him and his band of abolitionists to kill five pro-slavery settlers in Franklin County, Kansas. Three years later, Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry and his subsequent trial and execution helped push an already divided nation inexorably toward civil war. This is the story of John Brown, the age he embodied and the myth he became, and how the tragic gravity of his actions transformed America's past and future. Through biographical narrative, his life and legacy are discussed as a study in metaphor and power and the nature of historical memory.

Book excerpt: Lyndsey Pickford emulated the many stalwarts of old as well as those of contemporary times who set out for London to make their fortune. She was well educated and from a respectable family in the West Country. Breaking the ties of her schooling days, she first took a lowly job on banana ships plying their commercial trade from Bristol to the West Indies. However, her heart had been pledged to London. As a member of the fair sex, she fancied her chances in taking up the recent opportunity of employment offered by the Metropolitan police during the1920s. She had been undoubtedly influenced by the Bluestocking Movement and the extension of the vote for women. The time was ripe for her to do what she really wanted to do - exercise her love for logic in her job and defy the penalty placed on women who married in the newly introduced service in London. But who could have predicted the perils, adventure, excitement and love that she would find on the way to that private fulfilment?
