Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of Dairy Progress Production and Plans for Fifty More The average production per dairy animal in Wisconsin is al most pounds of milk a year, making 190 pounds of butter fat instead of 150, the average Of the United States. With Wisconsin farmers in 147 different cow-testing associations test ing the quality Of the production of over animals, and dis carding this last year over 5 per cent Of those animals; with 48 of these cow-testing associations in which every male animal is purebred rather than a scrub or inferior in quality; with the elimination of disease, which it has been possible to bring about here in Wisconsin so that now whole counties are entirely free from the scourge of tuberculosis - ir is Obvious that Wisconsin is in a position to face the competition of the future better than any other state in the nation. The work of continued improvement will have to be pushed harder than ever as prices decline - better animals, better feed ing methods, better care, elimination of all possible losses in the production of milk. Then, too, the leaks that now occur in the manufacturing processes must be cut out or greatly reduced. These are the little foxes that destroy the vines, and eat up the profits. Take this recent experience of two Swiss factories in Green county. In one factory the milk brought the factory pa trons 60 cents per 100 pounds because the quality Of the cheese was so poor. Most of it developed a putrefactive fermentation, the so-called stinker cheese. Within a mile from this factory was another factory which was turning out an extra fine product, bringing its farmer owners $3 a hundred for their milk. It is necessary to overcome just such leaks as this to convert a serious loss into a profit. A well-established industry, as is dairy ing, judiciously and intelligently handled, 'still offers the best field for Wisconsin endeavor. The gamble in this crop is in finitely less than would be the case in grain, fruit, or beef, under Wisconsin conditions. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed account of French history from the oripins of the Thrid Republic, born out of the collapse of Napoleon III's Second Empire, to the coming of the Great WAr in 1914. Part 1 begins with the fall of the "notables" and the victory of the republicans. Then follows a picture of the economy and society of late nineteenth-century France, and an examination of spiritual and cultural development under the increasing threat from nationalist and socialist forces. The moderates' brief ascendancy at the end of the century followed by the extreme sentiments unleashed at the time of the Dreyfus affair, brings the story in Part 2 to a more passionately political period, when the republic finallynbecame established as a bulwark of bourgeois prosperity, witnessing the rise of the banks and big business, and the dangerous revival of colonial expansion.

Book excerpt: Feeding Poultry is required reading for anyone interested in giving their flocks a better diet. First published in 1955, this book is modern enough that no important point is overlooked, yet old enough that free range, green feed, home-grown grains, and small flocks are given due attention. Written by pioneering poultry scientist G. F. Heuser of Cornell University, the book is aimed at practical poultrymen in addition to poultry scientists, and this makes it more accessible than more recent works. This book is part of the Norton Creek Classics series; books from our past with an important role to play in our future. Feeding Poultry is volume 4 in the Norton Creek Classics series. Book excerpt: THE UPDATED CLASSIC OF THE ANIMAL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, NOW WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY YUVAL NOAH HARARI Few books maintain their relevance—and have remained continuously in print—nearly fifty years after they were first published. Animal Liberation, one of TIME’s “All-TIME 100 Best Nonfiction Books” is one such book. Since its original publication in 1975, this groundbreaking work has awakened millions of people to the existence of "speciesism"—our systematic disregard of nonhuman animals—inspiring a worldwide movement to transform our attitudes to animals and eliminate the cruelty we inflict on them. In Animal Liberation Now, Singer exposes the chilling realities of today's "factory farms" and product-testing procedures, destroying the spurious justifications behind them and showing us just how woefully we have been misled. Now, Singer returns to the major arguments and examples and brings us to the current moment. This edition, revised from top to bottom, covers important reforms in the European Union and in various U.S. states, but on the flip side, Singer shows us the impact of the huge expansion of factory farming due to the exploding demand for animal products in China. Further, meat consumption is taking a toll on the environment, and factory farms pose a profound risk for spreading new viruses even worse than COVID-19. Animal Liberation Now includes alternatives to what has become a profound environmental and social as well as moral issue. An important and persuasive appeal to conscience, fairness, decency, and justice, it is essential reading for the supporter and the skeptic alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the iconic Cathy comic strip comes her first collection of funny, wise, poignant, and incredibly honest essays about being a woman in what she lovingly calls "the panini generation." As the creator of Cathy, Cathy Guisewite found her way into the hearts of readers more than forty years ago, and has been there ever since. Her hilarious and deeply relatable look at the challenges of womanhood in a changing world became a cultural touchstone for women everywhere. Now Guisewite returns with her signature wit and warmth in this essay collection about another time of big transition, when everything starts changing and disappearing without permission: aging parents, aging children, aging self stuck in the middle. With her uniquely wry and funny admissions and insights, Guisewite unearths the humor and horror of everything from the mundane (trying to introduce her parents to TiVo and facing four decades' worth of unorganized photos) to the profound (finding a purpose post-retirement, helping parents downsize their lives, and declaring freedom from all those things that hold us back). No longer confined to the limits of four cosmic panels, Guisewite holds out her hand in prose form and becomes a reassuring companion for those on the threshold of "what happens next." Heartfelt and humane and always cathartic, Fifty Things That Aren't My Fault is ideal reading for mothers, daughters, and anyone who is caught somewhere in between.
