Book excerpt: In October of 1967, on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, the Hoover Institution at Stanford University sponsored a week-long conference on "Fifty Years of Communism in Russia." In addition to the United States, participants came from Great Britain, Germany, France, and Canada--and the Soviet Embassy in Washington was also concerned enough to send several observers. The papers included in this volume give a well rounded picture of all aspects of the first fifty years of Soviet history: Bertram D. Wolfe, "Marxism and the Russian Revolution"; Leonard Schapiro, "The Basis and Development of the Soviet Polity"; G. Warren Nutter, "The Soviet Economy: Retrospect and Prospect", John N. Hazard, "Rigidity and Adaptability of Soviet Law"; Ivo J. Lederer, "Soviet Foreign Policy"; Jean Laloy, "Proletarian Internationalism", Raymond L. Garthoff, "Military Theory and Practice"; John Turkevich, "Fifty Years of Soviet Science"; Max Hayward, "Themes and Democratic Challenge to Communism."

Book excerpt: First Published in 1961 Russia Forty Years On presents a comparative overview of Russian history from the Tsarist days to the Stalin Era. Morgan Philips Price looks back on Russia over a period of fifty years - the Tsarist time, the First World War, the October Revolution, and the time of Stalin; and describes his last visit there in the autumn of 1959. Though the book is mainly about Russia there are two chapters at the end about Germany and especially about that part which was under Russian influence. Having seen Russian Communism in its homeland, author compares it with what can be seen of it in Central Europe. This book will be an interesting read for scholars and researchers of Russian history, Communist history, and European history.

Book excerpt: This is an authoritative and comprehensive history of the Fifty Years' war and the relationship that dominated world politics in the second half of the twentieth century. For fifty years relations between the United States and the Soviet Union were deciding factors in international affairs. Available for the first time in paperback, Richard Crockatt's acclaimed book is an examination of this relationship in its global context. It breaks new ground in seeking a synthesis of historical narrative and analysis of the global structures within which superpower relations developed. Attention is given to economic as well as political and military factors.

Book excerpt: "Robert Robinson (1907?-1994) was a Jamaican-born toolmaker who worked in the auto industry in the United States. At the age of 23, he was recruited to work in the Soviet Union, where he spent 44 years after the government refused to give him an exit visa for return. Starting with a one-year contract by Russians to work in the Soviet Union, he twice renewed his contract. He became trapped by the German invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II and the government's refusal to give him an exit visa. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering during the war. He finally left the Soviet Union in 1974 on an approved trip to Uganda, where he asked for and was given asylum. He married an African-American professor working there. He finally gained re-entry to the United States in 1976, and gained attention for his accounts of his 44 years in the Soviet Union."--Wikipedia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical ballet was perhaps the most visible symbol of aristocratic culture and its isolation from the rest of Russian society under the tsars. In the wake of the October Revolution, ballet, like all of the arts, fell under the auspices of the Soviet authorities. In light of these events, many feared that the imperial ballet troupes would be disbanded. Instead, the Soviets attempted to mold the former imperial ballet to suit their revolutionary cultural agenda and employ it to reeducate the masses. As Christina Ezrahi's groundbreaking study reveals, they were far from successful in this ambitious effort to gain complete control over art. Swans of the Kremlin offers a fascinating glimpse at the collision of art and politics during the volatile first fifty years of the Soviet period. Ezrahi shows how the producers and performers of Russia's two major troupes, the Mariinsky (later Kirov) and the Bolshoi, quietly but effectively resisted Soviet cultural hegemony during this period. Despite all controls put on them, they managed to maintain the classical forms and traditions of their rich artistic past and to further develop their art form. These aesthetic and professional standards proved to be the power behind the ballet's worldwide appeal. The troupes soon became the showpiece of Soviet cultural achievement, as they captivated Western audiences during the Cold War period. Based on her extensive research into official archives, and personal interviews with many of the artists and staff, Ezrahi presents the first-ever account of the inner workings of these famed ballet troupes during the Soviet era. She follows their struggles in the postrevolutionary period, their peak during the golden age of the 1950s and 1960s, and concludes with their monumental productions staged to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the revolution in 1968.
