Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of print was begun by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 in Mainz, Germany. His invention of the mechanized and mass production of print replaced the previous handwriting of the scribes and was a transformative achievement. It was both the product of and a catalyst for far-reaching intellectual, social, and political changes that began during the Renaissance and continued for centuries right up to the present. The age of electronic media was begun by Steve Jobs in 1985 in Cupertino, California. His integration of the elements of desktop publishing--personal computer, page-layout software, page-description language, and laser printer--replaced the previous photomechanical processes of printing and was a transformative achievement. It was both the product of and a catalyst for the intellectual, social, and political changes during the digital revolution that will extend for generations into the future. This book discusses these two bookends in the age of print. It follows the transitions and stages of innovation in printing between the fifteenth and twenty-first centuries and shows how the inventors responsible for this progress are bound together in a chain of revolutionary technical change called disruptive continuity. While the works of Gutenberg and Jobs are separated by more than five centuries, there are striking parallels and differences between these two innovations. They both sparked the quantitative expansion of literacy and the spread of knowledge around the world. However, the emergence of electronic publishing--especially in its present-day social media forms--has brought a vast increase in the consumption of information while also heralding a qualitative transformation that places the tools of wireless and mobile multimedia publishing into the hands of billions of people on earth. Much in the same way that there was a historical lag between Gutenberg's invention and the full impact of printing on the world, so too in our own time, the long-term societal consequences of electronic publishing have yet to be realized.

This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Robert Winterbotham (1904-1971)—who wrote as both R.R. Winterbotham and Russ Winterbotham (as well as the pseudonyms “J. Harvey Bond” for mysteries and “Franklin Hadley”)—began publishing in the late 1920s, though his didn’t make his science fiction debut until 1935, when “The Star that Would not Behave” appeared in Astounding. He published prolifically in most of the top magazines of the day, before settling into an action-adventure niche. From the fiction magazines, he moved into comics (writing for Red Ryder), comic strips (he penned “Chris Welkin, Planeteer” from its start in 1951 into the 1960s), and Big Little books for the Whitman Publishing Company (he wrote at least 60, including the Maximo the Amazing Superman series). All the while, he maintained his full-time job as fiction editor for Scripps-Howard NEA news service. In those days, newspapers published fiction, and many had a weekly insert that included full-length novels. Although well regarded, his novels—which appeared under pseudonyms—failed to attract much fan attention, and he is largely forgotten today. Nevertheless, modern readers will enjoy his better-than-average writing and fun, action-adventure plots—often with clever twists. Included in this volume are: ORIDIN’S FORMULA THE MINUS WOMAN DEAD MAN’S PLANET THE THOUGHT-MEN OF MERCURY THE MONSTER THAT THREATENED THE UNIVERSE LONESOME HEARTS A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE THE WHISPERING SPHERES GENESIS! If you enjoy this volume, search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press MEGAPACK" to see the 400+ other entries in the series, covering science fiction, modern authors, mysteries, westerns, classics, adventure stories, and much, much more!
Book Synopsis Arts and Crafts Book Covers by : Malcolm Haslam
Download or read book Arts and Crafts Book Covers written by Malcolm Haslam and published by Richard Dennie Publication. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the age of the paper book jacket, publishers issued their books in cloth-covered boards, which were stamped with designs in golf leaf and color. From around 1860, artists of the Arts and Crafts movement supplied many of the best designs. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris and Walter Crane led the way, and they were followed in the 1890s by Laurence Housman, Charles Ricketts and Selwyn Image, among others. Prominent Arts and Crafts architects, such as Philip Webb and C.F.A. Voysey, also designed book covers. Malcolm Haslam explores this uncharted territory, investigating not only the designs and designers, but the publishers and binders as well. He introduces some artists, little known today, whose designs filled the bookshops and bookshelves of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, and he shows how designers in Europe and America were influenced by British book covers decorated in the Arts and Crafts style. Ninety-nine of the best covers are illustrated and described, and details are given of over fifty Arts and Crafts designers who worked in commercial book production, and their marks and monograms are shown.

Download or read book The Golden Age of Homespun written by Jared Van Wagenen, Jr. and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You have seen neglected oxbows, but what do you know of their making or of the training of a yoke of oxen?... What do you know of the rambling shoemakers who came to a farmhouse and stayed until each member of the family was newly shod with leather from the farm's cattle? Have you ever wondered about the processes by which our frontiersmen translated forest land into fields of wheat? What do you know about those two first crops of the pioneers, ashes and maple sugar? What do you know of log houses, of shingle making, bridges, and flax growing, of spinning and weaving cloth for a garment that was homegrown and homemade? Here is folk history, the accumulated memory of old men and women whom the author knew,... memories he has substantiated by a lifetime of research."—from the Foreword by Louis C. Jones The Golden Age of Homespun chronicles the occupations, handicrafts, and traditions that defined rural life in upstate New York—and throughout much of America—in the first half of the nineteenth century. First published in 1953, it is an engaging and affectionate account of how land was cleared, farms established, and homes built; of how each family fed, clothed, and warmed itself; and of the trades, crafts, and industries that augmented a primarily agrarian economy. Illustrated with 45 delightful line drawings that depict the activities and implements described by Jared van Wagenen, Jr., The Golden Age of Homespun is an invaluable record of how upstate New York farmers lived on and off the land in the decades before the Civil War—a vanished way of life that still holds strong appeal in the American imagination.

Book Synopsis The Shadows of Empire by : Samir Puri
Download or read book The Shadows of Empire written by Samir Puri and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful, thought-provoking, and wide-ranging study of how the vestiges of the imperial era shape society today. In this groundbreaking narrative, The Shadows of Empire explains (in the vein of The Silk Roads and Prisoners of Geography) how the world’s imperial legacies still shape our lives—as well as the thorniest issues we face today. For the first time in millennia we live without formal empires. But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel their presence rumbling through history. From Russia’s incursions in the Ukraine to Brexit; from Trump’s America-First policy to China’s forays into Africa; from Modi’s India to the hotbed of the Middle East, Samir Puri provides a bold new framework for understanding the world’s complex rivalries and politics. Organized by region, and covering vital topics such as security, foreign policy, national politics and commerce, The Shadows of Empire combines gripping history and astute analysis to explain why the history of empire affects us all in profound ways; it is also a plea for greater awareness, both as individuals and as nations, of how our varied imperial pasts have contributed to why we see the world in such different ways.
