Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field-Studies of Some Rarer British Birds To-day we live with nature, and books on British birds are very numerous, perhaps too numerous, since many of them are but a repetition - and often a bad repetition - of their forbears. Possibly, therefore, the sole merit of these essays rests on the fact that practically all the matter contained in them comes from long, personal observation and research. They may, indeed, be described as "Field-Studies of Some Rarer British Birds." Most of the species selected are really scarce, or, at any rate, extremely local; while one or two - notably the Kite - are very rare indeed. All the same, even by some ornithologists proper as opposed to the casual nature-lover, most rare birds are considered rarer than they are in reality. Of these the Chough affords one good example, the Raven another, the Peregrine a third, the Buzzard a fourth, the Golden Eagle a fifth, and so on. A long Preface is out of place, so I will merely add that, wherever those dangerous adverbs "always" and "never" occur, they apply to personal observation only. This book, published in 1976, owes much to the interest, almost an obsession, of the Nethersole-Thompson family. The two girls and four boys, as well as both parents, now work as a team in the wild and beautiful north-west Highlands of Scotland. Greenshanks has drawn heavily on the team's field notebooks. In the gneiss country of Sutherland, so different from the forest bogs of Spey Valley, Fennoscandia and the Soviet Union, they have particularly concentrated on the greenshank's displays and breeding, food and feeding behaviour and its remarkable voice. There can be few long-term projects on waders to equal this made by the Nethersole-Thompsons, and there are valuable specialist contributions by other eminent ornithologists. Greenshanks is a major contribution to bird studies and takes its place beside Desmond Nethersole-Thompson's four earlier monographs. The illustrations in colour and monochrome by Donald Watson have all the veracity and atmosphere that one has come to expect of this gifted artist.

'From mid-January to mid-April 1935 I was off on my dilapidated bicycle, but how different Speyside was from Breckland. In late February many crossbills were still in flocks; I had to walk and cycle for many miles before finding my first nest in the last week of March, when I located a small breeding group in a plantation of old pines close to a keeper's cottage. Thenceforward, until 1942, I followed the crossbills and slowly began to understand a little about them. At first everything was gloriously new. I watched my crossbills mating and discovered how subtly a winter flock changed to a mating party and from a mating party to mated groups. I studied patterns of territory and dispersion and watched how hens built their nests. I sat under trees and I climbed to nests. I watched hens brooding and saw cocks feeding them. One hen pitched on my fingers and allowed me to catch her. I still vividly recall the sharp resiny scent of her body. I saw pairs rear their young and followed them and their broods through the forest. Soon my notebooks were full, but this was only the beginning.' That extract from the book's first chapter describes how the author began his study of the Scottish pine-feeding crossbills, having noticed earlier that the calls of crossbills in Rothiemurchus Forest were different from those of the spruce-feeding common crossbills he had known in the English Breckland. From this study and a quest for the true identity of the Speyside crossbills has emerged that all too rare book, a work of scholarship and research that is wholly readable, in which the author's delight in his study subject becomes the reader's, too.

The place of the Raven in myth, legend and history is long established, and this book describes the bird's fall from grace as a valued scavenger in medieval cities to a persecuted outcast in the modern wilds. The previous wide occurrence of Ravens is reviewed against the relationships between their present distribution, status and habitat requirements, as both a nesting and a non-breeding resident. The dependence of Ravens on carrion (especially sheep) within an omnivorous diet is the key to the species' ecology, and its social behaviour has evolved in close relation to this lifestyle. The flocking and communal roosting of non-breeders are major features of Raven behaviour, while their nesting habits emphasise the territorial nature of breeding birds and their adaptation to secure but harsh environments. Raven numbers vary in relation to their food supply, local populations adjusting accordingly, although the precise mechanism involved is still obscure. Ravens have a considerable capacity for recolonising old haunts when suitable conditions are restored, as well as exploiting new areas where the habitat becomes favourable, and there are local success stories to tell. Nationwide, however, the species' position is delicately balanced and depends on both sympathetic land management practices and improving attitudes to Ravens as friends not foe. Worldwide, Ravens are one of the most successful of all bird groups, occurring over a large part of the northern hemisphere, and replaced in some southern and tropical regions by other raven species which exploit the familiar raven niche in their own environments. The discussion of the northern hemisphere species is enlivened by reference to other species where useful. Finally, the Raven's age-old reputation for high intelligence is weighed critically against the available evidence. Today, Ravens carry a new omen in the modern world, as a barometer of goodwill to wildlife. Like those in the Tower of London, the continued existence of Ravens in our wild countryside will reveal something about both our current situation and our prospects for the future. The text is brought to life through wonderful illustrations by Chris Rose.
