This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous expansion of higher education has made it possible not only for more students to get straight into university, but also for more students to obtain a university place at their second attempt immediately after their first attempt fails. However, the educational experiences of students who seek such a second chance have been under-examined. In filling this empirical gap, this book offers an application of Bourdieu’s analysis of class reproduction through education (together with his three concepts of habitus, cultural capital, and field, and the concept of emotional capital derived from an extension of his framework) to make sense of educational experiences of 64 community-college students who seek such a second chance in Hong Kong. The option of community college as a second chance became available in Hong Kong in the year 2000. The book explores how specific characteristics of community college in Hong Kong impact on the ways in which respondents of the middle and working classes see and feel about their selves throughout the course of pursuing this second chance. It also revisits Bourdieu’s framework and suggests the possibility of theorising an observed class contrast in orientation to making sense of (academic) challenges posed in educational contexts as a form of classed habitus of middle-class situational interpretation as opposed to working-class direct understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic postseason collapses and logic-defying defeats suffered by the Boston Red Sox in the 86 long years between their 1918 and 2004 world championships are the stuff of legend. Fan fixation on the climactic moments--Johnny Pesky's late throw in 1946, Bill Buckner's boot in 1986 and so many others--leaves the full story of the team's experiences in the playoffs and World Series too little remembered. This thorough history covers all postseason appearances from 1903 through 2005, including the one-game playoffs of 1948 and 1978. A review of each playoff team's regular season exploits not only explains how the team qualified for postseason play, but also captures the feeling of the team and its fans during the campaign. Every postseason game is studied in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the 1919 White Sox scandal and the suspension for life of eight players, baseball saw a precipitous decline in popularity, especially among America's youth. To combat this, a group of World War I veterans who were members of the newly formed American Legion created an organization to promote teenage interest in baseball. Led by John L. Griffith, who became the first commissioner of the Big Ten Conference, the Legion undertook the revival of baseball. In the 1920s and through the Great Depression and World War II, Legion baseball grew steadily. By 1950 it had become the principal training ground for major league players, boasting at its peak more than 16,000 teams across the country. Tracing the long history of this uniquely American institution, this work details each year's American Legion World Series and the ups and downs of participation over nearly a century.

But the whole Baxter Boys series is so good you won't want to miss anything, so start at the beginning." - Nancy ★★★★★ "Most Clean/Christian authors just seem to skip the chemistry and temptation aspect of a relationship and if you are reading a romance you want to feel and see that through the characters. At least I do, but without the explicit nature. Jessie does that. Every. Time.” – Tiffany ★★★★★ “This is one of those romances that just make you feel good. This author does that well. She takes your average story and makes it better.” - sheana ★★★★★ "Beautifully written and very emotional story filled with pain, self-doubt, healing, and love! Characters are vividly portrayed." - Natalya ★★★★★ "I wasn’t sure how I’d feel leaving the core group of Baxter’s and branching out to their friends, but this book was every bit as good as the previous ones. Amazing characters and circumstances and forces of will. I can only hope that this series will continue." - Michaela Books in the Baxter Boys series: Always With You Forever With You Still With You Second Chance With You For Keeps With You

Book excerpt: This combination reference book and history covers the inroads and achievements made on professional ball fields by Latin American athletes, the Major Leagues' greatest international majority. Following an "on this date in Hispanic baseball history" format, the author takes a commemorative look at generations of players from Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, from the earliest pioneers through the well-known stars of today. There are two appendices: first Latinos by franchise; and an extensive chronological listing of Latino milestones by country. The book is fully indexed by players, teams, ballparks, and other contributors to Latino baseball history.
