Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction (FBP) System is a systematic method for assessing wildland fire behavior potential. This field guide provides a simplified version of the system, presented in tabular format. It was prepared to assist field staff in making first approximations of FBP System outputs when computer-based applications are not available. Quantitative estimates of head fire spread rate, fire intensity, type of fire, and spread distance, elliptical fire area, perimeter, and perimeter growth rate are provided for eighteen fuel types within five broad groupings (coniferous, deciduous, and mixedwood forests, logging slash, and grass), covering most of the major wildland fuel types found in Canada. The FBP System is intended to supplement, not replace, the experience and judgment of fire personnel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction (FBP) System provides a systematic method of assessing fire behaviour. The FBP System has 14 primary inputs that can be divided into 5 general categories: fuels, weather, topography, foliar moisture content, and type and duration of prediction. In the FBP System these inputs are used to mathematically develop 4 primary and 11 secondary outputs. Primary outputs are generally based on a fire intensity equation, and secondary outputs are calculated using a simple elliptical fire growth model. This publication provides diagrams, examples, and exercises that explain the FBP System in a user-oriented manner. This guideline delineates the interpretation of the FBP System's inputs and outputs and details how the predictions are derived.

Book excerpt: The Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction (FBP) System is a subsystem of the larger Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System, which also includes the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System. The FBP system provides quantitative estimates of head fire spread rate, fuel consumption, fire intensity and fire description and gives estimates of fire area, perimeter, perimeter growth rate and flank and back fire behaviour. This report describes the structure and content of the system and its use with forest fire characteristics.

Book excerpt: This weather guide includes detailed specifications for locating and instrumenting fire weather stations, taking weather observations, and overwintering the Drought Code component of the FWI System. The sensitivity of the FWI System components to weather elements is represented quantitatively. The importance of weather that is not directly observable is discussed in the context of fuel moisture and fire behavior. Current developments in the observation and measurement of fire weather and the forecasting of fire danger are discussed, along with the implications for the reporting of fire weather of increasingly automated fire management information systems.

Book excerpt: "In September 2004, the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers established a federal, provincial, and territorial task group of assistant deputy ministers (ADMs) and commissioned the development of the Canadian Wildland Fire Strategy (CWFS). The ADMs created an intergovernmental team of analysts, experienced fire managers, and researchers, known as the CWFS Core Team, to consult with Canadian and international experts, collate information, conduct analyses, and present the findings. This team was directed to assess the current state of wildland fire management in Canada, examine the key influences and trends, and identify possible desired future states and how they could be achieved. This publication comprises a collection of nine reports written by the CWFS Core Team members and their associates. Collectively these papers include syntheses, analyses, and perspective articles that address a variety of the social, economic, and biophysical aspects of wildland fire and its management as well as policy, science, and operational issues in Canada."--Pub. desc.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire intensity is a crucial descriptor of fire behaviour that may also be an important determinant of many types of ecological dynamics. However, fire intensity has proven challenging to measure directly. Indirect estimates of fire intensity are often confounded with the ecological effects of the fire, precluding further study of the relationships between intensity and population or community dynamics. In this report, the authors describe a novel method for estimating the intensity of fires in the boreal forest of Ontario using high resolution imagery taken soon after fire. This method relies on an empirical relationship between the branch structure of fire-killed trees (crown fraction burned) and fire intensity rankings provided by the Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction System (FBP) and its field guide for fire managers. The results of the application of this method to 660 high resolution aerial photography sample plots, each 25 m in diameter, dispersed among 11 fires that occurred in the boreal forest of Ontario in 2005 are described.--Document.

Book excerpt: Global Application of Prescribed Fire provides a first-hand perspective of the various methods and ways people around the world view and use prescribed fire. It covers the logistics, constraints and social dynamics surrounding the intentional use and application of fire by humans, and demonstrates how, why, when and where prescribed fire is used in different regions. Written by international experts, the book has four key objectives: explore new techniques, ideas and thoughts on how to apply prescribed fire from a global perspective; provide regional case studies covering issues that may constrain or enhance prescribed fire projects; stimulate cross-cultural conversations about how fires function in ecosystems; and relate prescribed fire to wildfire regimes with implications for protecting life and property, as well as sustaining local fire cultures and unique fire-dependent flora and fauna. Global Application of Prescribed Fire enhances our understanding and knowledge about the application of prescribed fire. This comprehensive book will provide fire practitioners, researchers, agencies and policymakers with key ecological and managerial insight of how prescribed fires are conducted around the globe.

This book was released on 2011-12-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Although there are a few publications which address post-fire management, the focus of these has been either on general approaches to restoration or specific topics such as preventing post-fire soil erosion. This book is about the post-fire management of fire-prone forest types in southern Europe. It provides the first comprehensive overview of the topic, ranging from stand-level to landscape-level management, and from emergency actions to long-term restoration approaches.
