Book excerpt: Australia is one of the few countries in the world which is generally associated with a single group of plants -- the eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is a huge genus including about 900 species and subspecies. More than 280 are described in this book which covers the whole of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia north of 26 latitude. Volume 3 has been extensively revised, updated and expanded following the first edition published in 1994 Northern Australia provides a different set of environments from the southern regions of the continent. The northern part of all three states has a tropical climate with a long dry season followed by a short summer wet season. Descriptions have full colour illustrations of the tree, bark, buds and fruit and the botanical terms are explained and illustrated. Field Guide to Eucalyptus Volumes 1, 2 and 3 form the most authoritative reference to all species of eucalyptus in Australia.

Book excerpt: Updated edition of this illustrated guide to identification.Australia?s bush and cities alike are dominated by eucalypts, in habitats as diverse as desert dunes and snowy mountain tops. Eucalyptus? uses are varied: from commercial harvesting for essential oil, timber or fibre, to species with spectacular flowers that are prized by gardeners as ornamental trees. Many of these species may superficially look alike. It is not possible to identify eucalypts from their leaves alone, but with a few simple aids to identification most can be tracked down. This easy-to-use book guides the reader through the key features: type of bark, appearance of buds, flowers and fruit ? the gumnuts ? and arrangement of bud clusters that will lead to the correct species name.

Book excerpt: Australia is remarkable in that its landscapes are often associated with a single group of plants -- the eucalypts. The genus Eucalyptus includes about 900 species and subspecies, with almost a third occurring in south-eastern Australia in the crescent from the top of Spencer Gulf in South Australia around to the northern New South Wales border including Tasmania. All known species arid subspecies from this region are now included in this new third edition of the "Field Guide to Eucalypts: Volume 1 South-eastern Australia. All are fully described and illustrated with over 1,500 colour photographs and drawings. With each page treatment, the more distinctive plant features are emphasised with bold type and colour photographs showing the form of the species, i.e. tree or mallee, and its bark, flower buds and fruit. The botanical terms used throughout are explained and illustrated in the Introduction and defined in the Glossary. In the revised second edition of 2000, each plant digest was provided with a summary showing where the species fits within the overall classification of the genus and this method has been continued with the current volume. The book begins with a history of the genus Eucalyptus since first discovered by early European navigators and botanists. This is followed by a section outlining the characters we use to identify eucalypts. A separate key is provided for each of the four States and the Australian Capital Territory as covered in this volume. A range of accessible characters is used to distinguish the species. Volume 1 covers most of temperate, south-eastern Australia and provides the most authoritative reference for anyone interested in trees-botanists, foresters, naturalists and indeed, tree-lovers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, there has been an increasing recognition that eucalypts are vulnerable to a wide range of diseases. They have suffered destructive epidemics, particularly of dieback caused by the cinnamon fungus in native forests, of foliar diseases and cankers in plantations, and of dieback of remnant trees on agricultural and grazing land. This has stimulated intensive research into the causes and management of diseases of the eucalypts. This work represents a comprehensive review of our current knowledge of the health and diseases of eucalypts.

Understanding the biology of flora and its value to honey bees is the core foundation for successful beekeeping. Bees feed on nectar and pollen. No food equals no bees! The flowers on which bees forage have a major impact on stocking rates and the level of nutrition available to the colony, two subjects that need to be understood for a beekeeper to be successful. Whether a beekeeper owns one hive or a thousand, the principle is the same. Floral resources within Australia underpin so many systems and animal species. Building knowledge and understanding of what they are, and how they are adapting to a changing climate, is a critical field of scientific endeavour. This publication is part of the journey to focus on the value of plants to nectarivores and honey bees in particular. The result of over 30 years of research, it distils both scientific knowledge and the opinions of hundreds of beekeepers into a reference work that will be the cornerstone of floral understanding in apiculture for years to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian Native Plants provides a comprehensive guide to the horticulture of our native plants. Based on nearly 50 years of experience at Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, the book describes the necessary growing conditions for mainly Western Australian native plants and covers some of the more technical aspects such as plant propagation and grafting, the use and benefits of tissue culture, methods of seed collection and storage, and the role of smoke in improving germination. Western Australia is home to about five per cent of the world’s vascular plants and contains Australia’s only terrestrial ‘biodiversity hotspot’. Written by experts with an in-depth knowledge of how to grow these plants outside their natural habitat, Australian Native Plants provides the more technically minded professional or enthusiast with information based on decades of research, experimentation and application. It aims to encourage the growing of Australian plants so that they can be used more widely and contribute to interesting, attractive and diverse private gardens and public landscapes in a changing environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant trees of Australia, eucalypts make up a remarkable genus. This authoritative volume provides current reviews by active researchers of many disciplines, including evolutionary history, genetics, distribution and modelling, the relationship of eucalypts to fire and nutrients, ecophysiology, pollination and reproductive ecology, interactions between eucalypts and other co-existing biota (including fungi, invertebrates and vertebrates), and conservation and management. Together these reviews shed light on the reasons for the great success of eucalypts in Australian environments, and provide a comprehensive summary for comparison with the ecology of major woody plant genera in other continents. This volume is of particular relevance to Australian ecologists, but also provides a stimulating perspective to students of vegetation ecology in all continents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refecting what a new generation of conservation biologists is doing and thinking, this vital and far ranging second edition explores where conservation biology is heading. It challenges many conventions of conservation biology by exposing certain weaknesses of widely accepted principles. Combining contributions from both the school and the new breed of conservation biologists, this insightful text focuses primarily on topics the are integral to the daily activities of conservation biologists. Several chapters address ecosystem restoration and biotic invasions as well as the the mechanics of population viability analyses, which are now a routine facet of conservation efforts. A case history approach is implemented throughout the book, with the use of practical real-world examples. Furthermore, an in-depth look at quantitative analyses is presented, allowing for models and mathematical analyses to pinpoint limitations in existing data and guide research toward those aspects of biology that are most likely to be critical to the dynamics of a species or an ecosystem.
