Book excerpt: This field guide contains descriptions and colour photographs of snags and logs of 10 coniferous and 3 deciduous tree species found in the interior Columbia River basin, mainly in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, USA. Methods are described to distinguish among the different species when various amounts of branches, cones, and bark are missing. Wildlife use of the different species of snags and logs are listed. Snags and logs are each classified into three categories based on structural features. Six indicators of fungal decay are illustrated.

Download or read book Fire Ecology of Pacific Northwest Forests written by James K Agee and published by . This book was released on 1993-11 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading expert in the emerging field of fire ecology, James Agee analyzes the ecological role of fire in the creation and maintenance of the natural forests common to most of the western U.S. In addition to examining fire from an ecological perspective, he provides insight into its historical and cultural aspects, and also touches on some of the political issues that influence the use of fire. Although the focus of chapters on the ecology of specific forest zones is on the Pacific Northwest, much of the book addresses issues that are applicable to other regions. Illustrations, tables, index.

Book Synopsis Wildland Fuel Fundamentals and Applications by : Robert E. Keane
Download or read book Wildland Fuel Fundamentals and Applications written by Robert E. Keane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new era in wildland fuel sciences is now evolving in such a way that fire scientists and managers need a comprehensive understanding of fuels ecology and science to fully understand fire effects and behavior on diverse ecosystem and landscape characteristics. This is a reference book on wildland fuel science; a book that describes fuels and their application in land management. There has never been a comprehensive book on wildland fuels; most wildland fuel information was put into wildland fire science and management books as separate chapters and sections. This book is the first to highlight wildland fuels and treat them as a natural resource rather than a fire behavior input. Moreover, there has never been a comprehensive description of fuels and their ecology, measurement, and description under one reference; most wildland fuel information is scattered across diverse and unrelated venues from combustion science to fire ecology to carbon dynamics. The literature and data for wildland fuel science has never been synthesized into one reference; most studies were done for diverse and unique objectives. This book is the first to link the disparate fields of ecology, wildland fire, and carbon to describe fuel science. This just deals with the science and ecology of wildland fuels, not fuels management. However, since expensive fuel treatments are being planned in fire dominated landscapes across the world to minimize fire damage to people, property and ecosystems, it is incredibly important that people understand wildland fuels to develop more effective fuel management activities.
Book Synopsis Assessment of Nontimber Forest Products in the United States Under Changing Conditions by : James L. Chamberlain
Download or read book Assessment of Nontimber Forest Products in the United States Under Changing Conditions written by James L. Chamberlain and published by Forest Service. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nontimber forest products (NTFPs) are fundamental to the functioning of healthy forests and play vital roles in the cultures and economies of the people of the United States. However, these plants and fungi used for food, medicine, and other purposes have not been fully incorporated into management, policy, and resource valuation. This report is a forest-sectorwide assessment of the state of the knowledge regarding NTFPs science and management information for U.S. forests and rangelands (and hereafter referred to as the NTFP assessment). The NTFP assessment serves as a baseline science synthesis and provides information for managing nontimber forest resources in the United States. In addition, this NTFP assessment provides information for national-level reporting on natural capital and the ecosystem services NTFPs provide. The report also provides technical input to the 2017 National Climate Assessment (NCA) under development by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP).

Book Synopsis Wildlife-habitat Relationships in Oregon and Washington by : David H. Johnson
Download or read book Wildlife-habitat Relationships in Oregon and Washington written by David H. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides information about the terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats of Oregon and Washington and the wildlife that depend upon them; it also supports broader and more consistent conservation planning, management, and research. The 27 chapters identify 593 wildlife species, define some 300 wildlife terms, profile wildlife communities, review introduced and extirpated species and species at risk, and discuss management approaches. The volume includes color and bandw photographs, maps, diagrams, and illustrations; and the accompanying CD-ROM contains additional wildlife data (60,000 records), maps, and seven matrixes that link wildlife species with their respective habitat types. Johnson is a wildlife biologist, engineer, and habitat scientist; and O'Neill is director of the Northwest Habitat Institute; they worked together on this publication project as its managing directors.
