Book excerpt: The notion of preparing Experimenting with Organizational Life developed among members of the Human Resources Centre at the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. It arose from their concern that the learning from field en gagements should be reported and passed on systematically. A series of internal seminars was started, and Robert Rapoport made a presentation on behalf of the group to a conference arranged by the United Kingdom Social Science Research Council in 1970. At first it was intended that only work directly connected with the Tavistock Institute should be included. Gradually it became apparent that the book would be strengthened by drawing on the work of people outside the Institute. In editing the contributions, I am especially indebted to my colleague P. Michael Foster, convener of the Human Resources Centre, for his unwavering support. I would also like to thank the authors and all those who contributed their ideas and thoughts. In the drive to unify the book they have cheerfully en dured my editorial changes. Hidden contributors to the book are members of the various client systems who granted privileged access to information and settings. Special thanks are due to Nicola Lacy Scott who has acted as subeditor, encour aging me when my spirits dropped and pressing for clarity of ideas and expres sion. The secretarial burden was ably carried by Pamela Rant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989. Management styles in developed western countries are undergoing a crisis phase. Increased levels of international competition and volatile trading conditions are creating new demands of job skills and responsibilities. The management challenge is to find work organization and employment strategies that sustain and develop employee performance and commitment. This book analyses the ‘high performance work systems’ that a number of American and European companies have evolved to meet this challenge. It particular, it describes in detail the experiences of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) at their UK manufacturing plant. This study not only illustrates the benefits of new forms of work organization, it also explores some important myths, notably that technical and organizational changes can produce ‘effortless excellence’. It also provides practical management guidelines for the effective application of high performance work design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theoretical developments in the field of Action Research from a historical perspective. The central focus of the investigation is the concepts of democracy and subjectivity as defined by the field’s various traditions. To address this issue, this book offers a thorough investigation of the theoretical and historical underpinnings of Action Research in order to argue that such a clarification allows for a transcendence of the distinction between theory and practice in political action. This transcendence will be achieved with the theories of the German critical psychologist Klaus Holzkamp and his interpretation of subjectivity and democracy. Holzkamp establishes a comprehensive mode of change based on the contradiction of existing possibilities for action and restrictions in a concretely given empirical situation. This book is aimed at History of Psychology Classes, Social Workers, Activism Researchers, Undergraduate Courses in Critical Thinking and Political Action, and Decolonial Theory in Psychology.

Was bedeutet Zusammenarbeit in einem Unternehmen?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a treatment of the role of science and the nature of theory and research. A discussion of the early origins and history of organizational behavior follows. This is the most comprehensive coverage of how organizational behavior emerged and grew. It presents and evaluates the first generation theorists, whose work began during the first 20 years. The subject matter covered is motivation, leadership, and organizational decision making. The institutional culture of organizational behavior is discussed and a vision for the future of the field is stated. Here the early history and the evidence from the theories are brought together in an effort to assess the identity of organizational behavior and where it might be headed.
