Book Synopsis Catalog of the German-Americana Collection, University of Cincinnati by : Don Heinrich Tolzmann
Download or read book Catalog of the German-Americana Collection, University of Cincinnati written by Don Heinrich Tolzmann and published by De Gruyter Saur. This book was released on 1990 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adolescent Criminal examines the most important issues, components, and trends concerning adolescent misconduct from the vantage point of the end of the 1980s, and concerns itself with what to look for in the future.Despite indications that juvenile delinquency is decreasing, a closer look at the picture gives much cause for concern. Adolescent crime has become increasingly more sophisticated, violent and heterogeneous, and its participants younger. Gang violence has spread out from urban centers into suburbia, and gang members have become more organized in their activities. Juvenile prostitution has shown little sign of abating despite the presence of AIDS. Drug and alcohol use among adolescents has reached epidemic proportions, as have running away from home and pettier acts of delinquency. This study of juvenile delinquency is primarily concerned with the adolescent years of youth where delinquency behavior is most pronounced, taking a multicontextual, multidisciplinary approach to exploring the adolescent criminal. The advantage in this is that it takes into consideration the contributions, strengths and weaknesses of the various schools of thought with respect to the delinquency of adolescents--sociological, psychological, biological, familial, demographical, legal, and international, and their implications for the future--in order to present the student with a greater overall perspective and knowledge of the dynamics of adolescent crime today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: German Cincinnati explores the German American experience in the Greater Cincinnati area. German immigrants first came to the region in the late 18th century and then arrived in great waves beginning in the early 19th century. These German American immigrants and their descendants have greatly influenced the social, political, cultural, religious, and economic growth and development of the area, earning Cincinnati a reputation for its German heritage. It is known as one of the corners in the famed "German Triangle," along with St. Louis and Milwaukee. German Cincinnatians survived the hard times of the world wars of the last century, even experiencing an ethnic heritage revival that has reaffirmed the area's reputation as one of the major centers of German heritage in the United States today.

This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Civil War-era politics explores how German immigrants influenced the rise and fall of white commitment to African-American rights. Intertwining developments in Europe and North America, Alison Clark Efford describes how the presence of naturalized citizens affected the status of former slaves and identifies 1870 as a crucial turning point. That year, the Franco-Prussian War prompted German immigrants to re-evaluate the liberal nationalism underpinning African-American suffrage. Throughout the period, the newcomers' approach to race, ethnicity, gender and political economy shaped American citizenship law.

Book Synopsis Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States by : P. Ramsey
Download or read book Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States written by P. Ramsey and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of one of the most contentious educational issues in America examines bilingual instruction in the United States from the common school era to the recent federal involvement in the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing from school reports, student narratives, legal resources, policy documents, and other primary sources, the work teases out the underlying agendas and patterns in bilingual schooling during much of America s history. The study demonstrates clearly how the broader context - the cultural, intellectual, religious, demographic, economic, and political forces - shaped the contours of dual-language instruction in America between the 1840s and 1960s. Ramsey s work fills a crucial void in the educational literature and addresses not only historians, linguists, and bilingual scholars, but also policymakers and practitioners in the field.
