Explosive data growth, coupled with user expectations of unlimited access from anywhere, at any time, is pushing storage environments to the limit. To meet these dynamic business demands, the network must evolve to improve speed, increase efficiency, and reduce costs. Legacy infrastructures were not designed to support the performance requirements of flash-based storage technology. A new approach to storage networking is required to unlock the full capabilities of all-flash arrays. By treating the network as a strategic part of a storage environment, organizations can maximize their productivity and efficiency, even as they rapidly grow their environments. The IBM Storage Networking SAN24B-6 switch provides exceptional value in an entry-level switch, combining high-performance capabilities of 4, 8, 16, and 32 Gbps, point-and-click simplicity, and enterprise-class functionality. The port speed capability is dependent on the transceiver installed. SAN24B-6 provides small to midsized data centers with low-cost access to industry-leading Gen 5 and Gen 6 Fibre Channel technology and the ability to start small and grow on demand from 8 to 24 ports to support an evolving storage environment. In addition, SAN24B-6 is easy to use and install, with a point-and-click user interface that simplifies deployment and saves time.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing demand for fast and reliable data storage has led to a storage system known as a storage area network (SAN). A SAN is a storage network that connects servers to storage through a network known as a fabric. The fabric is based on the Fiber Channel (FC) protocol and is most often composed of fiber optic devices. The devices of a fabric run at high data rates, 1Gbps to 10Gbps, with very low losses. Medium sized SANs have been a common implementation for data storage in enterprize data centers, but with the increasing demand for data storage the SANs have developed into distributed SANs (DSANs) also known as large fabrics. In this work a number of investigations were conducted on a large fabric and it was found that a large fabric experiences fabric scaling and fabric stability issues. To understand the extent of the scaling and stability issues of a large fabric an adequate tool is required, and for this investigation the tool was selected as a discrete event software simulator. The software simulator provides a number of benefits over the alternative tools of an analytical model or a hardware test setup, such as cost and time. However, the initial time requirement to construct the model is greater than the alternative tools, and in order to develop the model both an analytical model and a hardware test setup must be utilized. In this work, the modeling of a FC switch using the OMNET++ discrete event simulator and the simulations of a large fabric are presented. The model implements the FC 2 level of the switch, which contains the fabric services, such as the directory services, name server, routing, etc. These fabric services are solely responsible for fabric building and managing. This dissertation also details the benchmarking tests of a SAN and DSAN, and examines one of the existing simulation tools to show the exact problem with the existing simulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IBM Redbooks publication supersedes both: IBM TotalStorage: Introduction to SAN Routing, SG24-7119-00 Implementing the IBM TotalStorage Multiprotocol Routers, SG24-7246-00 The rapid spread and adoption of production storage area networks (SANs) has fuelled the need for multiprotocol routers. The routers provide improved scalability, security, and manageability by enabling devices in separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging fabrics into a single, large SAN fabric. This capability enables clients to initially deploy separate SAN solutions at the departmental and data center levels. Then, clients can consolidate these separate solutions into large enterprise SAN solutions as their experience and requirements grow and change. Alternatively, multiprotocol routers can help to connect existing enterprise SANs for a variety of reasons. For instance, the introduction of Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI) provides for the connection of low-end, low-cost hosts to enterprise SANs. The use of an Internet Protocol (IP) in the Fibre Channel (FC) environment provides for resource consolidation and disaster recovery planning over long distances. And the use of FC-FC routing services provides connectivity between two or more fabrics without having to merge them into a single SAN. This book targets storage network administrators, system designers, architects, and IT professionals who sell, design, or administer SANs. It introduces you to the products, concepts, and technology in the IBM System Storage SAN Routing portfolio. This book shows the features of each product and examples of how you can deploy and use them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) burst upon the data center storage scene in April of 2007 with a joint press release issued by ten of the leading companies in the storage industry. Since that initial press release, FCoE has generated an extraordinary amount of discussion and controversy within the industry. The purpose of this book is to examine the FCoE technology and provide an understanding of the reasons behind its development and ultimate applications. Just as Fibre Channel rode the way of Storage Area Networking and brought an entirely new paradigm to storage attachment, FCoE is riding the wave of the converged data center Ethernet. The realization of a converged data center network will fundamentally change the storage landscape and open the storage market to new ideas, architectures and products. Because FCoE is based on both Fibre Channel and Ethernet, an understanding of both of these technologies is required to fully understand FCoE. It is not the intent of this book to cover those technologies in depth. The companion books in the Fibre Channel Consultant series already provide a thorough discussion of the Fibre Channel technologies and protocols. Similarly, there are many excellent books that already cover Ethernet. This book targets the marriage of those two technologies and explains how FCoE leverages the advantages of both technologies as the storage component of a converged data center Ethernet. Using more than 160 figures and 25 tables to illustrate the essential concepts and operation of FCoE, this book proceeds step-by-step from basic concepts through detailed examination of all FCoE protocols. Unlike other texts, including the standards themselves, Fibre Channel over Ethernet expands on key factors such as configurations, deployment scenarios and the benefits of FCoE. It's the ultimate resource for anyone involved in this dynamic technology.

Book excerpt: Annotation Enter the new era of data storage that combines database and networking technologies with this introductory comparison and practical implementation of Storage Area Networks. Multiple vendor reference: This book provides solutions and schemes from competing SAN vendors, including an appendix of available SAN products. Readers will learn to customize their own SAN solution: Authors forecast future growth of SANs in an Advanced Study of Virtual Interface. Technically accurate instruction: NIIT recently earned the National Education and Training group Excellence Award for defect-free deliveries of Learning products. Even highly experienced system or network professionals are unfamiliar with SAN functionality and terminology. This book opens with an overview of the need for data storage in an enterprise environment, the different types of data storage devices, and existing data storage techniques. The authors build on that foundation with an exploration of the evolution of SAN, the various networking models and data-centric applications, a chapter dedicated to fiber channel, and practical solutions for centralized, heterogeneous, and high-speed data storage challenges. The second half of this book delves into more practical applications of the SAN: designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting a SAN. The last chapter explores how SAN fits into the current Web scenario, and VI Architecture as a new system of cluster communications. Unlike competing titles, this book provides solutions for alternative SAN vendors, comparing SAN schemes for competitive products.
