A two page summary outlines the current state-of-the-art of these composites, and is followed by a discussion of 1967 research on the composites, arranged according to matrix- and fiber-materials. The bulk of the report consists of summaries of 1967 research programs, arranged by programs. (Author).

Book excerpt: "This text treats the important properties of the three primary types of materials--metals, ceramics, and polymers--as well as composites, and the relationships that exist between the structural elements of these materials and their properties. Emphasis is placed on mechanical behavior and failure including, techniques that are employed to improve the mechanical and failure characteristics in terms of alteration of structural elements. Furthermore, individual chapters discuss each of corrosion, electrical, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties. New and cutting-edge materials are also discussed. Even if an instructor does not have a strong materials background (i.e., is from mechanical, civil, chemical, or electrical engineering, or chemistry departments), he or she can easily teach from this text. The material is not at a level beyond which the students can comprehend--an instructor would not have to supplement in order to bring the students up to the level of the text. Also, the author has attempted to write in a concise, clear, and organized manner, using terminology that is familiar to the students. Extensive student and instructor resource supplements are also provided."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The concept of reinforcing a material by the use of a fiber is not a new one. The Egyptian brick layer employed the same principle more than three thousand years ago when straw was incorporated into the bricks. More recent examples of fiber reinforced composites are steel-reinforced concrete, nylon and rayon cord reinforced tires, and fiberglass reinforced plastics. In the last several years considerable progress has been made on new composite structures particularly utilizing boron (on tungsten substrate) fibers in various matrices. Many of these advances have been reviewed recently by P. M. Sinclair1 and by Alexander, Shaver, and Withers.2 An excellent earlier survey is available by Rauch Sutton, and McCreight.3 Boron-reinforced epoxy composites are being fabricated and tested as jet engine components, fuselage components, and even as a complete aircraft wing because of the tremendous gain in experimentally demonstrated properties such as modulus, strength, and fatigue resistance, particularly on a weight normalized (e.g., strength/density) basis. Other than glass/epoxy and boron/ epoxy composites and perhaps boron/aluminum, the systems now under study are in the early stages of research and development. These include other boron/metal composites, graphite/polymer, graphite/metal, graphite/graphite, alumina/metal, and aligned eutectic (directionally, solidified) combinations. As Sinclair points out, designers are wary about filamentary composites becausethere is little background information and scant experience.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the characterization methods involved with carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based composites, with a more detailed look at computational mechanics approaches, namely the finite element method. Special emphasis is placed on studies that consider the extent to which imperfections in the structure of the nanomaterials affect their mechanical properties. These defects may include random distribution of fibers in the composite structure, as well as atom vacancies, perturbation and doping in the structure of individual carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of Oxide-Based Fiber-Reinforced Ceramic-Matrix Composites is to provide comprehensive information on the most recent successful findings. The book consists of six chapters which characterize the current state of the art concerning oxide-based fiber-reinforced composites. Chapter one provides an introduction, examples of application areas and background information. Chapter two deals with the primary material properties for the areas of application and lists the possible constituent parts of the composites, depending on particular demands. Chapter three explains both the past and present fabrication methods which can affect the performance of the composites. Chapter four defines the interphase-related phenomena and describes the mechanical characteristics of the oxide-based fiber-reinforced composite, produced with different interphases. Chapter five deals with the fabrication route, functionality and mechanical characterization of the porous-matrix composites. The last chapter summarizes the present achievements and identifies requirements for reaching the goal, thereby providing a promising course for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the modern materials, the composites have a few decades of history. However, there has been a tremendous advancement of this class of material in science and technology. During recent decades, composite materials have steadily gained ground in nearly all sectors. The composite materials have been used in various industrial applications such as buildings and constructions, aerospace, automotive and sports equipment, consumer products etc. Nanotechnology is rapidly evolving, and science, engineering, and technology have merged to bring nanoscale materials that much closer to reality. It is one of the fastest growing areas for research. Nanocomposite materials are helping improve products that we use every day and creating new, exciting products for the future. Composites and nanocomposites composed of reinforcements, nano-reinforcements, and matrices are well-known engineering materials. Keeping in mind the advantages of composite and nanocomposite materials, this book covers fundamental effects, product development, properties, and applications of the materials including material chemistry, designing, and manufacturing. The book also summarizes the recent developments made in the area of advanced composite and nanocomposite materials. A number of critical issues and suggestions for future work are discussed, underscoring the roles of researchers for the efficient development of composites and nanocomposites through value additions to enhance their use.

Book excerpt: Refractory oxide particles of urania (UO2) and zirconia (ZrO2) were added to a tungsten matrix and elongated into fibers by hot extrusion. Extrusion temperatures ranged from 3200 degrees to 4000 degrees F (1760 degrees to 2200 degrees C). The geometry of the oxide fibers appeared to be closest to that of an ellipsoid with the major axis alined in the extrusion direction. Oxide fibering was measured by an average length-to-width ratio of the fibers sectioned parallel to the major axis. the extent of oxide deformation was estimated in terms of strain components. Oxide-matrix deformation characteristics were related to the extrusion parameters by comparing the estimated oxide strain components to those of the composite. In terms of fibering, the greatest oxide elongation average length to width ratio = 200, was obtained in tungsten-UO2 composites extruded at 3600 degrees F (1980 degrees C) with a composite reduction of 18 to 1. values of average length to width ratio for tungsten-UO2 composites extruded at 3200 degrees and 4000 degrees F (1760 and 2200 degrees C) were nearly equal (average length to width ration =100) even though the composite reductions were 12 to 1 and 18 to 1, respectively. For a tungsten-ZrO2 composite extruded at 4000 degrees F (2200 degrees C), average length to width ratio =160. These length-to-width ratio values have no direct relation to the length-to-diameter ratio commonly used to describe fibered composites containing cylindrical fibers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic Fibers and Fibrous Composite Materials has a two-fold purpose. First, it supplements and updates the information on ceramic and graphite fibers and whiskers which was presented in Volume 1 of the Refractory Materials Monograph Series. Secondly it reviews the progress being made in fiber-reinforced materials which utilize these newer fibers as reinforcements. For this latter purpose, the properties of composites, the problems of fiber handling and alignment, the problems of fiber-matrix interaction, and the effects of fabrication processes on composite properties are discussed. In addition, a chapter on fiber and whisker testing is included.
