Book excerpt: Fiber optics have been utilized in a variety of sensor and data transmission roles, some of which are complicated by the presence of ionizing radiation. In this paper, transient radiation effects in fibers are reviewed. Both luminescence and absorption processes are discussed in this paper, with emphasis on the latter subject. Most discussions are on effects occurring below 100 ns, with limited data in the microsecond time regime. This paper is intended as a review paper and its scope is restricted to previously published work. Areas that will profit from further study are highlighted.

Book excerpt: Some applications of optical fibers require their exposure to intense radiation fields. This exposure can potentially degrade performance of a fiber data link. Research at Los Alamos National Laboratory has recently concentrated on development of an understanding of such radiation effects at short times, less than 100 ns. In previous papers we have identified a particular type of fiber, ITT plastic-clad-silica (PCS) with Suprasil core as optimum for short time radiation-induced attenuation, but that work used very large doses of ionizing radiation, close to 1 Mrad. For these high dose exposures, moderate success in understanding the transient nature of the attenuation was realized with a geminate recombination model. In this paper, we report further studies with ITT PCS fiber over a range of doses and wavelengths. Data on other PCS fibers is included that provide performance comparable to the ITT product. Comparison to several fluorsilicate fibers is also included.

Book excerpt: Samples representative of most of the optical fibers presently available in lengths of 10 m or more were tested for their responses to energetic radiation. Glass fibers doped with three different levels of cesium were also prepared and tested. Permanent and transient x-radiation effects tests were performed. Neutron effects tests were performed. All of the fibers tested showed decreases in transmission when exposed to radiation. All of the fibers emitted fluorescent light pulses when exposed to intense x-ray pulses.

Book excerpt: Semi-transient and transient radiation-effects tests were performed on a Corning low-loss, radiation-resistant optical fiber. The semi-transient tests, which involved measurement of the fiber transmission during and after irradiation with X-rays, show this fiber to be much more resistant to permanent damage by radiation than other available glass fibers. The transient radiation-effects tests, in which the response of the fiber was measured during and for short times after pulses of X-rays and neutrons, show that the fiber may not be applicable to systems that cannot tolerate operational lapses of a few microseconds duration. This is because the fiber emits fluorescent radiation and shows temporary transmission losses during and shortly after pulses of radiation.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review is presented on the effects of ionizing radiation on the performance of fiber optic cables, and on the materials used for fabrication of optical fibers. This includes a summary of the permanent and transient radiation-induced losses in optical transmission of state of the art fibers, a detailed discussion of the mechanisms responsible for the losses observed, and a report on inhouse materials development to achieve radiation hardened fiber optic glasses.

Book excerpt: We propose a new method for measuring transient radiation effects in optical fibers on a nanosecond timescale. The method, which incorporates a streak camera, allows more precise time resolution than other methods and has the advantage of measuring the radiation-induced attenuation as a function of wavelength and time simultaneously. By choosing different light sources and sweep speeds, radiation-induced attenuation may be measured under a variety of experimental configurations. Examples of the type of output obtained with our method are given.

Book excerpt: Transient absorption in optical fibers has been studied with emphasis on fast absorption components. Radiation damage was induced with a Febetron 706 electron accelerator, modified to deliver an electron pulse width of 1.1 ns. Dye lasers were synchronized to the accelerator to provide a light pulse through the fiber during the radiation pulse. The output light pulse was detected with a biplanar vacuum photodiode. Four scope traces were used on each electron pulse to monitor the Febetron output, the input drive pulse, and two records of the output pulse on two sweep speeds. Detailed data were acquired for times less than 100 ns after irradiation. An insulated enslosure was used to vary fiber temperature from -30°C to + 250°C. Several fibers were studied with emphasis on ITT T303 PCS fiber. Data were acquired at 600 and 850 nm. Theoretical modeling of the data is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is intended to provide an in-depth, self-contained, treatment of optical waveguide theory. We have attempted to emphasize the underlying physical processes, stressing conceptual aspects, and have developed the mathematical analysis to parallel the physical intuition. We also provide comprehensive supplementary sections both to augment any deficiencies in mathematical background and to provide a self-consistent and rigorous mathematical approach. To assist in. understanding, each chapter con centrates principally on a single idea and is therefore comparatively short. Furthermore, over 150 problems with complete solutions are given to demonstrate applications of the theory. Accordingly, through simplicity of approach and numerous examples, this book is accessible to undergraduates. Many fundamental topics are presented here for the first time, but, more importantly, the material is brought together to give a unified treatment of basic ideas using the simplest approach possible. To achieve such a goal required a maturation of the subject, and thus the text was intentionally developed over a protracted period of the last 10 years.
