Book Synopsis Apelles und Hermogenes by : Katharina Greschat
Download or read book Apelles und Hermogenes written by Katharina Greschat and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the intellectual and social context of two Christian teachers living in the second half of the second century. It presents a coherent reconstruction and interpretation of their teaching, often considered to be marginal within the development of early Christian doctrine. The first part of the book seeks to understand the Marcionite Apelles as a cultured person, who shaped his understanding of Christian doctrine in the context of the philosophical background and in permanent discussion with other Christian schools. In this respect Apelles coincides with the Christian Platonist Hermogenes. His opinions are described in the second part of the book. The author points out that teachers like Apelles and Hermogenes had to answer the questions of the educated in order to defend and to define their understanding of Christian faith.
Book Synopsis Russian Opera and the Symbolist Movement, Second Edition by : Simon Morrison
Download or read book Russian Opera and the Symbolist Movement, Second Edition written by Simon Morrison and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed for treading new ground in operatic studies of the period, Simon Morrison’s influential and now-classic text explores music and the occult during the Russian Symbolist movement. Including previously unavailable archival materials about Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, this wholly revised edition is both up to date and revelatory. Topics range from decadence to pantheism, musical devilry to narcotic-infused evocations of heaven, the influence of Wagner, and the significance of contemporaneous Russian literature. Symbolism tested boundaries and reached for extremes so as to imagine art uniting people, facilitating communion with nature, and ultimately transcending reality. Within this framework, Morrison examines four lesser-known works by canonical composers—Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Scriabin, and Sergey Prokofiev—and in this new edition also considers Alexandre Gretchaninoff’s Sister Beatrice and Alexander Kastalsky’s Klara Milich, while also making the case for reviving Vladimir Rebikov’s The Christmas Tree.

Book Synopsis A History of the Music for Wind Band by : Leon J. Bly
Download or read book A History of the Music for Wind Band written by Leon J. Bly and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2024-07 with total page 1188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a historical survey of the wind band’s music and denotes how historical and cultural developments have influenced it over the course of time. Although the modern wind band developed first in the 19th century, it has its roots in the wind music of ancient times, and music survives that has been composed since the Middle Ages. Therefore, this book covers the music from that time to the present, including the dance music of the Renaissance, the Harmoniemusik of the Classical Period, and the nationalistic music of the Romantic Period, as well as the major wind band repertoire developed after 1900.

Book Synopsis Bojidar Spassov's Musical Creation as a Reflection of the Eastern and Western European Traditions by : Maria Kostakeva
Download or read book Bojidar Spassov's Musical Creation as a Reflection of the Eastern and Western European Traditions written by Maria Kostakeva and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Irony, a major aesthetic attitude in 20th century music, ceases to be irony if seriously discussed. I play with the myth, inventing it myself and using it only as an object of interpretation.” This thought of the German-Bulgarian composer Bojidar Spassov sounds like a proclamation of the idea of postmodern irony that pervades all his work. Old and new times, cultural and national traditions, and archaic and modern sensibilities emerge like carnival masks through the ironic prism of his multifaceted music. The present book is the first monograph on this artist – a paradoxical multinational and multicultural phenomenon who developed in three geographical areas and three national cultures: Bulgarian, where he grew up; Russian, where his professional personality was formed; and Western European, where he found his own way among the countless aesthetic and compositional trends. This is also the first attempt to shed some light on a culture that is little known to the English reader – the contemporary music of Bulgaria.
