Book Synopsis Case, Semantic Roles, and Grammatical Relations by : Petra Campe
Download or read book Case, Semantic Roles, and Grammatical Relations written by Petra Campe and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of 6 books dealing with case phenomena in different languages, both Indo- and non-Indo-European, resulting from work by a team of 20 specialists at the University of Leuven. It is the first time such a large-scale investigation into case has been undertaken, and a remarkable feature of the project is the use of computer corpora of authentic material. This bibliography presents the many dimensions involved in research into case and case-related phenomena. This includes not only morphological case markers, but also the crossconstituent (semantic and grammatical) relations expressed by morphological case or by its various counterparts; morpho-syntactic processes such as transitivity and passivization; and pragmatic and textual considerations. In addition, the bibliography reflects the implications of case research for other disciplines, such as foreign language teaching and artificial intelligence. More than 6000 publications are listed. An extensive Subject Index provides easy access to all the topics and major concepts covered. A Language Index and a Guide to Languages/Language Families conclude the book. The other volumes in the series include The Dative (2 vols), The Genitive, The Nominative and Accusative, and Non-nuclear Cases.

Book Synopsis Disguise in George Sand's Novels by : Françoise Ghillebaert
Download or read book Disguise in George Sand's Novels written by Françoise Ghillebaert and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandian heroines swirl around men in their sororal and sartorial disguises like moths around candle flames. However, as Disguise in George Sand's Novels illustrates, the disguise is not an instrument to seduce men but rather to assert the heroines' true selves. The portrayal of female and androgynous protagonists in Rose et Blanche (1831), Indiana (1832), Lélia (1833/39), Gabriel (1839), Consuelo (1842), and La Comtesse de Rudolstadt (1844) is a metaphor to demonstrate the continuity of identities before and after the disguise as George Sand stipulates in her theory of the ménechme. Disguise in George Sand's Novels explores the maturation process of Romantic and artistically inclined heroines and highlights the spiritual meaning of the disguise as a rite of passage for the birth of a new type of protagonist: spiritual, self-assertive, and dedicated to erasing gender inequality and helping the poor.
Book Synopsis Hunter of Themes by : Karen Link Rosenflanz
Download or read book Hunter of Themes written by Karen Link Rosenflanz and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krzizanovskij summed himself up in one of his notebooks: "I am known for being unknown." Yet he was an authority on Shakespeare and Shaw, a noted scholar, and the author of very popular dystopian and phantasmagoria short stories. Rosenflanz examines the life and work of this Russian modernist, whose imagination used the Russian formalism and futurism then current in new and rich ways, whose skill with the pun rose even to the aural level, and whose life's goal was to resurrect the idea of word as thing in all its permutations: as words, as things, as things-words, and as words-things, even unto words as prophecy, which Rosenflanz interprets as "recollections of the future." Krzizanovskij's being known for being unknown is perhaps rooted in the fact that he was so far ahead that others could not recognize him as leading the charge. Book Synopsis The Italian Opera Libretto and Dubrovnik Theatre by : Viktoria Franić Tomić
Download or read book The Italian Opera Libretto and Dubrovnik Theatre written by Viktoria Franić Tomić and published by Hollitzer Wissenschaftsverlag. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere in Europe the Italian opera libretto has had such a direct and decisive influence on original national drama production as it did in Dubrovnik during the 17th and 18th century. In the "Golden Age of Croatian Literature", a hybrid drama genre was created. For more than a century, authors of this genre looked attentively at the most important trends of Italian opera production and followed them faithfully. In Croatian literature of that period, a specific model of libretti without music was created, one that appropriated the Italian libretto. These plays were not performed along with functional music, although sometimes authors and actors would provide instrumental accompaniment to the texts. Nothing more needs to be said about the dissemination and specific reception of Italian opera libretti in Dubrovnik during the 17th and 18th century to be understood as occupying a noteworthy place in the cultural life of Europe.

Book Synopsis Pushkin's Historical Imagination by : Svetlana Evdokimova
Download or read book Pushkin's Historical Imagination written by Svetlana Evdokimova and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historical insights of Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), Russia’s most celebrated poet and arguably its greatest thinker. Svetlana Evdokimova examines for the first time the full range of Pushkin’s fictional and nonfictional writings on the subject of history—writings that have strongly influenced Russians’ views of themselves and their past. Through new readings of his drama, Boris Godunov; such narrative poems as Poltava, The Bronze Horseman, and Count Nulin; prose fiction, including The Captain’s Daughter and Blackamoor of Peter the Great; lyrical poems; and a variety of nonfictional texts, the author presents Pushkin not only as a progenitor of Russian national mythology but also as an original historical and political thinker. Evdokimova considers Pushkin within the context of Romantic historiography and addresses the tension between Pushkin the historian and Pushkin the fiction writer . She also discusses Pushkin’s ideas on the complex relations between chance and necessity in historical processes, on the particular significance of great individuals in Russian history, and on historical truth.
Download or read book Language, People, Numbers written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contributors to this volume offer a broad range of novel insights about data-based or data-driven approaches to the study of both structure and function of language, reflecting the increasing shift towards corpus-based methods of analysis in a wide range of areas in linguistics. Corpora can be used as models of human linguistic experience, and the contributors demonstrate that there is ample scope for integrating such models into the descriptions of discourse, grammar and meaning. Continually improving technological development facilitates the design of larger and more comprehensive corpora documenting language use in a multitude of genres, styles and modes, even starting to include visual aspects. Software to investigate these data also becomes increasingly powerful and more refined. The sixteen original articles in this volume cover substantial ground on both the theoretical as well as applied levels. Having such data and software resources at their disposal, the contributing researchers rethink the long discussed interplay between language system and use from various angles, considering socio-cultural and cognitive involvement and representation, with synchronic as well as diachronic perspectives in view. These theories and quantitative / qualitative methods are applied to a range of topics from language acquisition and teaching to literature and politics. All of the authors in this volume reveal the profound and leading impact that Mike Stubb’s work has continued to contribute to the field of corpus-based description of language structure, use and function.
