Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every January, from 1996 to 2016, while I was suffering with summer in Rio I received snowy news from the Sundance Festival through Carlos Brandão and his partner Myrna. In those 20 years, Carlos and Myrna were my main source of information about independent world cinema. It is a great joy to see all this material gathered in a book. Carlos was a passionate researcher and, along with Myrna, an experienced reporter. Their interviews and reports on films and directors that have passed through Sundance have the mark of someone who saw everything up close. And knew how to tell it. Carlos Alberto Mattos – Film Critic When Robert Redford founded the nonprofit Sundance Institute in 1981, the intense creativity of American independent cinema in the 70’s was too distant. The Festival came to redefine the characteristics of a cinema that was becoming more conservative and less daring, as a reflection of the Reagan years. Betting on risk and dissonant and plural voices, Sundance knew how to reveal innovative directors and organize “Script Development Programs” in different parts of the world, starting with Brazil. The geopolitics of independent cinema would never be the same. Sundance marked the resumption of Brazilian Cinema after the disastrous government of President Collor. It was one of the first international festival to embrace our cinematography at that time and few critics and journalists followed this movement as closely as Carlos Augusto Brandão. With his inseparable Myrna, Carlos foresaw what was still under construction. He covered the Festival from the start, collecting precious interviews from young new-comers. I cannot remember Sundance without thinking about Carlos, his remarks and always relevant and sensitive questions, publishing stories that dimensioned the revival of Brazilian Cinema. These testimonies comprise this precious "20 Years of Independent Cinema". The interviews gathered here tell not only the story of the renaissance of independent cinema in different latitudes, but also speak of the intense passion that Carlos had for cinema. His texts make him both a witness and co-author of a cinema in transformation. Walter Salles – Film-Maker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current success story of new media and the ongoing digitalisation of our world provide an illuminating starting point for the discussion of the powerful revolutions in our media and media uses initiated by the introduction of a(ny) ‘new’ medium: how do new media evolve and how do they relate to established, ‘old’ media and media uses? What does the rise of new media and media uses imply for other discourses? And not least: which methodological and theoretical approaches help us to understand these developments? Metamorphoses of (New) Media offers an international and interdisciplinary range of studies on these questions. In examining the effects of new media and media uses in fields such as social discourse, transmediality, and aesthetics, the essays in this collection engage with a great variety of examples, from political debate on Twitter to digital storytelling and the game-like experience of DVDs. What these diverse perspectives share, however, is an approach to Metamorphoses of (New) Media as an ongoing, recursive process of change that initiates dialogue and casts light on existing discursive, medial, and aesthetic models.

Book excerpt: Challenging established views and assumptions about traditions and practices of filmmaking in the African diaspora, this three-volume set offers readers a researched critique on black film. Volume Three of this landmark series on African cinema spans the past century and is devoted to the documentation of decoloniality in cultural policy in both Africa and the Black diaspora worldwide. A compendium of formal resolutions, declarations, manifestos, and programmatic statements, it chronologically maps the long history and trajectories of cultural policy in Africa and the Black Atlantic. Beginning with the 1920 declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World, which anticipates cinema as we know it today, and the formal oppositional assertions--aspirational and practical. The first part of this work references formal statements that pertain directly to cultural policy and cinematic formations in Africa, while the next part addresses the Black diaspora. Each entry is chronologically ordered to account for when the statement was created, followed by where and in what context it was enunciated.
