No chemical symbols or formula: have been used. Use has been freely made of a limited number of names of chemical substances contained in commercial fertilizers which contribute to the nutrition of plants. These, however, are terms with which the pupil can familiarize himself as readily as with the geographical and other names that he has already mastered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potatoes, a Money Crop: How to Grow, Fertilize, Spray and Harvest Them at a Profit; Containing the Story of a Profitable Potato Crop On many Farms throughout the country, potatoes are the chief money crop, and if properly raised are not only a source of profit themselves, but also improve the land for crops that are to follow. The great value of the potato as one of our staple articles of food, makes economical production of extreme importance. In preparing this booklet, it is not the writer's purpose to over-burden potato growers with superfluous advice. It is hoped rather to summarize for the friends and customers of the Coe-Mortimer Company and for fertilizer users in general, the results of the writers own experience in raising potatoes covering many years of practical farm life, together with the results of his observation of the best practice of prominent growers in various sections. Soils. Potatoes will succeed on a variety of soils, doing best on a medium to light loam. Early crops of potatoes are, however, raised at a great profit on light and sandy soils, while heavy soils will give profitable crops of late potatoes, provided that such soils are well drained. It is, however, useless to attempt to grow potatoes at a profit on wet, heavy and ill-drained soils. Such soils, however, may be rendered suitable for potato growing by a thorough system of drainage and subsequent plowing in of green crops. In general heavy clay soils are unsuitable for potatoes, the tubers being soggy, poorly shaped, and subject to rot. Potatoes as a rule give the largest yields upon new soils; that is land just taken up from grass or clover. This is not true of all conditions, however, as on heavy soils where the sod is extremely tough, the potato crop may be preceded by a crop of corn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Soils and Fertilizers We have already learned that the soil con tains mainly two classes of materials, humus and mineral elements. We have defined humus as decayed vegetable matter, such as the re mains of plants that were not used by man, but left upon the soil. The elements of a mineral nature are just as essential to the welfare of the plant as the Organic matter, or humus. We will discuss these mineral ele ments from a chemical point of view in our next chapter, but we will now consider them briefly from a phy'sical standpoint. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils and Fertilizers, for Public Schools: A Discussion Upon the Nature and Treatment of Soils and the Value of Fertilizers There has been much ob eet'ion to the teaching of Agriculture in our District Schools, because teachers claim they do not have time to take up an additional subject, when they have so many subjects that are already required, and which must be taught. However, in recent years Agriculture has been coming into its own, and is being taught more and more in the schools. Teachers have begun to realize that any subject which holds the interest and attention of the pupils is worthwhile, and that any sub ect which does not hold their attention is not worthy of a place in our already crowded School course. In order to make Agriculture interesting to the pupil, we must base the work upon real practical problems which he can understand and appreciate. To do this is no small task, and it is a thing which demands a great deal of perseverance and initiative, on the part of teachers In such schools. The more ideas which an author attempts to incorporate into a text book, the more complex his text becomes, and the more difficult it is to follow. Therefore, in this text book we have taken' only a few of the most important conditions and have tried to incorporate them in such a manner that they can be used by the average district or graded school. We have tried further to make the book correct - theoretically and practically. The entire text has been written for boys and girls of the country schools, with these two things in mind, and the success which attends its use presupposes a proper presentation of many minor details, which it would be impossible to include under this cover. Many teachers get the idea that the sub ect of Agriculture as taught in our public schools is a Vocational Sub ect. This is' a mistaken idea, and the teachers should above all bear in mind that we are not making better farmers so much as we are making better men and women who are farmers. Naturally the teaching of Agriculture will make better farmers, and will serve to keep more of our boys on the farm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizers and Their Use On our comparatively new lands, and in general farm practice where a judicious rotation of crops is followed. And where grain is fed on the farm and the manure properly cared for, it may not be necessary to use commercial fertilizers; but where the nature of the crops grown prevents rotation, and where very little farmyard manure is produced, they may be required. More and more each year it is found that the increased cost of production and the consequent need of producing maximum crops, and the growing demands of the larger towns and cities for garden and fruit products of high quality, are causing market gardeners and fruit growers to consider seriously the advisability of using some form of fertilizer. This has created a demand for information concerning these substances which it has not been easy to fill; for experience has shown that the farmer must posses a wide knowledge of plants, soils and the fertilizers themselves before he can properly use them. To intelligently and economically use fertilizers, it is essential that the farmer understand the needs of the cr0ps, their power to gather the essential plant food constituents from the soil, and the purpose of their growth, i.e., whether the object is to produce an immature plant for early market, or whether maturity is required. He must also know something about the available supply of plant food' tn the soil and the nature of the fertilizer being used. These fertilizers are expensive, and unless they are intelligently applied in conjunction with very thorough cultivation they will not give their best results. They cannot take the place of cultivation; for they are food materials, and can only aid the growth of the plant as they are absorbed by the roots, and these cannot develop fully in a poorly cultivated soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phosphate Fertilizers for Hawaiian Soils, and Their Availability It has been shown in previous publications Of this station1 that the local soils are rich in phosphoric acid, but that it is securely locked up in insoluble and unavailable combinations with the highly basic (and probably also with the silicic) soil constituents. Iron and aluminum, which occur in abundance, and lime, which occurs in widely varying amounts, are known to be active in this fixation, and it is highly probable that titanium, which occurs in large amounts in Hawaiian soils, is also an important factor in the fixation. In view of these peculiarities of Hawaiian soils and also of the further fact that the results Of experiments made elsewhere with phosphate fertilizers, have been so contradictory that it is impossible to apply them to Hawaiian conditions, it was deemed important and desirable to. Make a careful study of the solubility of the phosphoric acid naturally occurring in the soils as well as of the behavior of various phosphates when applied to them. Book excerpt: This book showcases a compilation of case studies presented by scientists, teachers and academics and covers contemporary technologies for combating climate change, including sustainable agricultural management practices and conservation agriculture. It highlights the situations that future generations in the Indian Himalayas will face, and addresses the major challenges for tomorrow’s generations in their efforts to ensure sufficient food production for the global population. It also sheds light on the factors that are routinely ignored in connection with agricultural management practices for sustainable food production and risk assessment. Lastly, it illustrates the need to develop a comprehensive master plan for strategic planning, including conservation agriculture practices that address poverty and food security in the wake of climate change impacts.
