Book excerpt: A 2014 Garden Writers Association Media Award Winner Just as he demystified the soil food web in his ground-breaking book Teaming with Microbes, in this new work Jeff Lowenfels explains the basics of plant nutrition from an organic gardener’s perspective. Most gardeners realize that plants need to be fed but know little or nothing about the nature of the nutrients and the mechanisms involved. In his trademark down-to-earth, style, Lowenfels explains the role of both macronutrients and micronutrients and shows gardeners how to provide these essentials through organic, easy-to-follow techniques. Along the way, Lowenfels gives the reader easy-to-grasp lessons in the biology, chemistry, and botany needed to understand how nutrients get into the plant and what they do once they’re inside.

The last two chapters describe techniques for determining the nutrient element status of growing plants through plant analysis and tissue tests. The Plant Nutrition Manual is loaded with information on what plants need for normal vigorous growth and development-free of nutritional stress.

Book excerpt: The book provides practical guidelines on esstablishing laboratories for the analysis of soil, plants, water and fertilizers (mineral, organic and biofertilizers). A manual with simple procedural steps, considered most suitable to provide help to the laboratory technicians. It provides vaious analytical methods for estimating soil sonstituents with the objective of assessing soil fertility and making nutrient recommendations. It describes methods for analysing plant constituents in order to determine the contents of various nutrients and the need for their application. For assessing the quality of irrigation water, it presents standard methods for estimating the various parameters and constituents utilized, e.g. electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio, residual sodium carbonate, the ratio of magnesium to calcium, and boron content. In providing the methodology for fertilizer analysis, special consideration has been given to the fact that fertilizers are oftn statutorily controlled commodities and are traded widely among countries. The book is useful for students of agriculturer administrators and planners to establising laboratory, and to technicians through providing detailed and precise procedures for estimations.

Book excerpt: This book explores the agricultural, commercial, and ecological future of plants in relation to mineral nutrition. It covers various topics regarding the role and importance of mineral nutrition in plants including essentiality, availability, applications, as well as their management and control strategies. Plants and plant products are increasingly important sources for the production of energy, biofuels, and biopolymers in order to replace the use of fossil fuels. The maximum genetic potential of plants can be realized successfully with a balanced mineral nutrients supply. This book explores efficient nutrient management strategies that tackle the over and under use of nutrients, check different kinds of losses from the system, and improve use efficiency of the plants. Applied and basic aspects of ecophysiology, biochemistry, and biotechnology have been adequately incorporated including pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, agronomical, breeding and plant protection parameters, propagation and nutrients managements. This book will serve not only as an excellent reference material but also as a practical guide for readers, cultivators, students, botanists, entrepreneurs, and farmers.

The same format is maintained as in previous editions with the primary aim of the authors to consider major processes in soils and plants that are of relevance to plant nutrition. This new edition gives an up-to-date account of the scientific advances of the subject by making reference to about 2000 publications. An outstanding feature of the book, which distinguishes it from others, is its wide approach encompassing not only basic nutrition and physiology, but also practical aspects of plant nutrition involving fertilizer usage and crop production of direct importance to human nutrition. Recognizing the international readership of the book, the authors, as in previous editions, have attempted to write in a clear concise style of English for the benefit of the many readers for whom English is not their mother tongue. The book will be of use to undergraduates and postgraduates in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Ecology as well as those researching in Plant Nutrition.

Book excerpt: The burgeoning demand on the world food supply, coupled with concern over the use of chemical fertilizers, has led to an accelerated interest in the practice of precision agriculture. This practice involves the careful control and monitoring of plant nutrition to maximize the rate of growth and yield of crops, as well as their nutritional value. The Handbook of Plant Nutrition provides a readily accessible source of highly current and reliable information on the nutritional requirements of the most significant crops being cultivated worldwide. With their introduction, the editors provide an overview of plant nutrients and beneficial elements, distinguishing the difference between the two, and explaining research approaches and diagnostic criteria currently being applied. What then follows are twenty chapters, each one dedicated to an essential macro or micronutrient or beneficial element. Written by eminent researchers from across the world, each of the chapters- Offers historical information on the specific nutrient, explaining why it is either essential or a beneficial element, giving demonstration of its essentiality and functions in plants Explains how appearance and composition of plants can be used to assess nutritional status Discusses the value of soil tests for assessing nutritional status Recommends fertilizers that can be applied to remedy nutritional deficiencies Those chapters that cover beneficial elements discuss the history of the elements with regard to growth and yield, and provide current information concerning their impact on growth stimulation and plant metabolism for particular plant species. Of great value to growers, agricultural consultants, agronomists, and plant scientists, this handbook provides a practical easy-to-use reference for determining, monitoring, and improving the nutritional needs of plants. The graphical presentations of plant interactions with nutrients and beneficial elements, and the straight-forward explanations of how nutrient deficiencies arise are especially useful to those seeking knowledge of plant nutrition.

Book excerpt: Fertigation requires a thorough understanding of the science behind the technology to make it deliver the immense possibility it offers in crop production. Though the idea of fertigation existed from the times of solution culture, it did not receive the necessary attention from among plant nutritionists and agronomists when it reappeared in the context of micro irrigation. Fertilizer application in field agriculture has also not developed as a precision technology. Recommendations of the quantum of fertilizers required for a crop, at least in India are not based on current varieties of the crops, nor have they anything to do with the growth rate and developmental changes occurring while a crop is managed by the grower. Most of the fertilizer recommendations are itself very old and efforts to make them relevant to the current growing conditions, soil status, crop variety and crops reaction to the environment etc. are very limited. It is even worse when growers follow traders' recommendations whose idea is to sell more the fertilizer they supply. Not only lower yields and very low fertilizer use efficiencies, but the deterioration of soil and water bodies are the results.
