Drawing on ethnographic research over the past eighteen years among poor Hindu and Muslim communities in Rajasthan and among development and health actors in the state, this book contributes to developing analytic perspectives on reproductive practice, agency and the body-self as particular and novel sites of a vital power and politic. Rajasthan has been among the poorest states in the country with high levels of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. The author closely examines how social and economic inequalities are produced and sustained in discursive and on the ground contexts of family-making, how authoritative knowledge and power in the domain of childbirth is exercised across a landscape of development institutions, how maternal health becomes a category of citizenship, how health-seeking is socially and emotionally determined and political in nature, how the health sector operates as a biopolitical system, and how diverse moral claims over the fertile, infertile and reproductive body-self are asserted, contested and often realised. A compelling analysis, this book offers both new empirical data and new theoretical insights. It draws together the practices, experiences and discourse on fertility and reproduction (childbirth, infertility, loss) in Northern India into an overarching analytical framework on power and gender politics. It will be of interest to academics in the fields of medical anthropology, medical sociology, public health, gender studies, human rights and sociolegal studies, and South Asian studies.

Before 1960, there were substantial improvements in life expectancy, but fertility declines were very rare. Few people used modern contraceptives, and couples had large families. Since 1960, however, fertility rates have fallen in virtually every major geographic region of the world, for almost all political, social, and economic groups. What factors are responsible for the sharp decline in fertility? What role do child survival programs or family programs play in fertility declines? Casual observation suggests that a decline in infant and child mortality is the most important cause, but there is surprisingly little hard evidence for this conclusion. The papers in this volume explore the theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions of the fertility-mortality relationship. It includes several detailed case studies based on contemporary data from developing countries and on historical data from Europe and the United States.

Otherwise, India would remain a poor country, though a software superpower. Most Indian demographers are not concerned with poverty-fertility nexus. Suitable theory also lacks. So, a novel theory, the Demographic Field Theory, is presented herein explaining such nexus, filling up a great lacuna. Many canonical analyses are performed between demographic, socio-economic and policy systems, using recent National Family and Health Survey (NFHS), Census 2001, Sample Registration Survey (SRS) and Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) survey data, making it most current. Causal relations between syndrome of poverty and fertility, sadly, remains same, over time.The main purpose of this work is to draw attention of scholars and policy makers to this syndrome. All canonical results (1992-2004) very strongly proved that unless abject poverty and female illiteracy are not urgently reduced, fertility will not decline. This is also necessary for demographic transition. This study, being both theoretical and empirical, synthesizing and policy-oriented, thus has made a seminal and path-breaking contribution to demography, population studies, geography, economics and social sciences.

Book excerpt: Kerala does not conform to the socioeconomic development pattern normally associated with a rapid fertility decline. This report attempts to determine the causes of the decline that Kerala is experiencing. Given that the background description is not inaccurate, attention is focused upon social, cultural, and political characteristics that may be relevant. Three of these seem more important than others: land reform, political awareness, and education. Extensive land reform has not only redistibuted the wealth, but has also contributed to the decline of the matriarchal systems; every aspect of life in Kerala is politicized, facilitating better delivery of government services; and high educational attainment has been accompanied by high unemployment among the educated. All these factors seem to have had an effect on the declining fertility rate; family planning programs seem to have been insignificant.
