In a long life, much of it devoted to his fellow man Darrell Manley had experienced more than his share of soul searching 3:00 AM vigils. But haven't we all at one time or another? That is, found ourselves in these days of unequalled change, often questioned our own roles and purpose in the chaotic scheme of things? Like so many of us, Manley too, gropes through a world in constant flux. Like us, inevitably showered with such a richness of questionsand poverty of answers! Many may answer life's call by simply fleeing for answers to yoga, meditation, the mall, even Monday night football for consolation. For Darrell Manley, relief came in an entirely different package.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third and final installment of The SideRoad Kids, the boys and girls say goodbye to their childhood. As such, this book contains themes and imagery unsuitable for young audiences. Each of the nine stories is told by one adult character. Blew, Flint, and some of their friends joined the U.S. Army and served their country during the Viet Nam War. When they came home, they realized the war had changed them. They were men now. They had seen death up close and would never be the same. Some coped better than others. Some married, some started families, some divorced. Katie, the most independent of the bunch became a lost soul and spent time in the Peace Corps upon graduating from college. Shirley escaped the confinement of the small country town of Brimley, MI. The gravel road, so familiar to these individuals, was unaware of the turmoil surrounding it. Grass grew, birds sang, and the river kept its secrets. "Once again, Kennedy whisks readers into the rural past of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Through beautiful prose and memorable characters, each evocative story, complete in itself, also links to the series as a whole. The author's deft artistry forges visceral and spiritual links that define community. The SideRoad Kids trilogy stands as a celebration of victories despite brokenness, love despite rejection, and forgiveness. These books deserve high praise and elevate Kennedy to a most honored place among Michigan writers." --Sue Harrison, national best-selling author of The Midwife's Touch "Over the years, I've read many of Sharon Kennedy's stories. She's an amazing writer who draws you into the lives of her characters and keeps everything relatable. Readers can easily recall similar experiences. She makes you laugh, makes you think, and makes you want to keep reading. The SideRoad Kids is an entertaining book about a group of children growing up in Northern Michigan." -Kortny Hahn, Senior Staff Writer, Cheboygan Daily Tribune From Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com

Book excerpt: Journey to Five Island Cove for a roaring good time with friends old and new, their sons and daughters, and all their new husbands as they navigate the heartaches and celebrations of life and love. Jean Shields is devastated when the adoption she and her husband were set to complete falls through. Besides her solid-as-a-rock husband, her only solace is her two dogs, her sewing students, and her new friends in the women's group her mother-in-law has introduced her to. Alice and Robin want to help Jean, but they don't know how. Alice is dealing with a pregnancy scare, and Robin is trying to help her oldest daughter navigate collegiate options. AJ has the beat advice, as she's lived most of her life childless too. But her own baby is requiring more from her than she ever imagined. Eloise provides food and offers Jean a job at her inn though she's drowning to keep her head above water there. Kelli brings her son to Jean as much as possible, but it's not until Kristen convinces Jean to spearhead the new Seafaring Girls program in Five Island Cove that Jean starts to find some purpose to her life. Kristen is consulting on the program, as she ran it successfully many years ago, and her heart is happy as she watches a new generation of girls learn to love the sea while staying safe on it. But when someone returns to the Cove that no one ever expected to see again, old wounds open just as they'd started to heal. This group of women will be tested again, both on land and at sea, just as they once were as teens.

On their way to Balloon Field, where Trent, the hot air balloon pilot, is waiting to take them for a ride, they pass through the Rayon Junction Train Station. While they are there, they meet many peculiar citizens of Mydreama, including, Uncle David, the engineer of the Mountain Wildcat. They also find out that they are being followed by many ominous-looking blackbirds, but they have no clue that these birds are after their keys. When the boys finally reach the balloon, they are joined by the mysterious teacher that gave them the keys. With her is one their classmates, Dawnie, who joins Gerry and Shane on a very adventurous trip in the hot air balloon. While they are sailing across Cookie County, they see the Black-eyed Hills, just before a rare cotton ball storm disables their balloon, causing them to crash into the Raisin River. The adventure continues, as the gondola of the airship is transformed into a sailing vessel. Then, while they are sleeping, the currents pull them into the slower-moving Sweetwater River of the Sugar Hills, where they become stuck in a sugar slide. Gerrys sparrow friend comes to find them and takes, Mac and Tosh, two stowaway Knottys, to the Jamthumb Ranch to get help. In the meantime, the stranded castaways must figure out how to get their stuck craft out of the sugar, but are interrupted by two curious sugarbears. When their very angry mother shows up to claim her lost cubs, the kids are able to get away from her and get their boat back in the river, by eating some of Ms. Razzleberrys miraculous Jillybeans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you want to be remembered? This loving tribute to the author’s late husband tells the story of an “ordinary” man who was really quite extraordinary. Kenneth Robert Warner, Sr.: Biography of a Faithful Man is a personal memoir by Jacqueline Vater Warner, who traces Kenneth’s life from his birth during the Great Depression in 1933 in Cincinnati, Ohio. A child of tumultuous times, he grew up during World War II and spent most of his life in Kentucky. He attended college and then served in the Army during the Korean War. Kenneth taught school in the South during the Civil Rights era, which in itself is a fascinating story. His life echoes the times and the history happening around him. In spite of illness, this proud man struggled to support and raise a family of five children. Kenneth died in 2007 at the age of 73, after living a memorable and faithful life. His story is America’s story.
