Book excerpt: The Ferrari 250 LM was born of controversy. Enzo Ferrari wanted this compact mid-engined coupe to qualify as a GT car for world championship racing. The FIA, motor sport’s rule-makers, disagreed and this new model, of which just 32 were made, was forced to run as a sports-prototype in 1964 and 1965. To everyone’s surprise, the LM was to dominate the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 1965. 6313, entered by Ecurie Francorchamps, led for much of the race and finished second after a tyre failure in the closing stages. It was the high-spot of a busy season for a car that, 54 years later, is well-known as a successful contender in historic car racing. Author James Page covers the genesis of the 250 LM and its development, its technical details and specification, and the ongoing row about its homologation as a GT car. 6313 was driven at Le Mans in 1965 by Pierre Dumay and Gustave Gosselin, and led the race through Saturday night and Sunday morning, only to suffer a tyre blow-out with less than three hours to the finish, allowing the NART 250 LM of Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory to take victory. For many years the identity of 6313 was confused with its team-mate 6023. Detective work by Ferrari specialist Keith Bluemel, consultant on this book, clarified the situation. This book unravels the mystery. The book is profusely illustrated with period photographs and documents, and a gallery of studio photographs of the car as it is today.

Book excerpt: The Ferrari F40 wowed the motoring world when first unveiled in June 1987. The model took its name from the 'F' of Ferrari and '40' as a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Ferrari car production. Customers could have an F40 in any colour they liked, as long as it was red! It was fast, radical in appearance, and bereft of interior appointments, with a totally minimalist approach and extensive use of composite components in its construction, with a 478bhp, twin-turbo, 2,963cc, 90° V8 engine. Competition examples competed successfully in top-level national and international racing from 1989 to 1996. ● Lavish production, large-format, and extensively illustrated with over 400 images, including factory production, racing and 'under-the-skin' imagery showing the car's componentry. ● Fascinating and authoritative text from Ferrari marque expert Keith Bluemel. ● Appendices covering production data, specifications and the full racing history of the F40, event-by-event, and chassis-by-chassis. ● Interviews with Nicola Materazzi, widely regarded as the father of the F40, and Dario Benuzzi, Ferrari's F40 development driver. ● Comprehensive chapters covering Ferrari's roots, the F40's ancestry, design and production; under the skin of the F40; the F40 racing story and owning and running an F40 today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These bizarre true stories of collectors and their cars is "a whole lot of fun" (The Virginian Pilot). Have you heard of the fellow who squirrelled away dozens of Chevelles, Camaros, and other classic muscle cars in semi-trailers? How about the president of Shakespeare fishing rods, who sold thirty Bugattis for a mere $85,000? What about the English nobleman who cut up and buried his Ferrari hoard in an elaborate insurance scam? Or how about the Duesenberg abandoned in a Manhattan parking garage for decades only to be uncovered by Jay Leno? Most car collectors exhibit a healthy enthusiasm for their hobby by digging into their favorite marques, chasing parts, swapping stories, and generally living the car-guy lifestyle. Some, however, step over that fine line between enthusiasm and obsession—and that's where these legendary car-collector stories come from. In Strange but True Tales of Car Collecting, Keith Martin and the staff of Sports Car Market Magazine recount the wildest, most eccentric, over-the-top stories of collectors and their collections. "This likable book serves as a ‚ÄòRipley's Believe It or Not!' for car obsessives." —The New York Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moment in 1958 when a sports car-crazed youth in Massachusetts saw his first Ferrari changed his life. The black 250 GT coupe's seductive lines, purposeful air and already hallowed name seized Robert E. Guarino's imagination; just a few years later, he would be selling such cars. And in 1967, with two partners and an investment of just $6,000 apiece, he would open a Ferrari-Porsche-Datsun dealership. This memoir follows his lifelong journey with Ferraris and other remarkable automobiles, as an enthusiast and dealer. Highlights include a nonstop drive from Chicago to Boston in a 308 GTB; rides with important figures like Piero Ferrari at Fiorano and Dario Benuzzi at Mugello; visits to the Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini factories; the horror of watching a delivery truck crash onto a row of new cars; and time at the wheel of such icons as the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona," 250 GTO, 288 GTO and F40.
