Book Synopsis Muslim Women and Power by : Danièle Joly
Download or read book Muslim Women and Power written by Danièle Joly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the W.J.M. Mackenzie Book Prize 2017 This book provides an account of Muslim women’s political and civic engagement in Britain and France. It examines their interaction with civil society and state institutions to provide an understanding of their development as political actors. The authors argue that Muslim women’s participation is expressed at the intersections of the groups and society to which they belong. In Britain and France, their political attitudes and behaviour are influenced by their national/ethnic origins, religion and specific features of British and French societies. Thus three main spheres of action are identified: the ethnic group, religious group and majority society. Unequal, gendered power relations characterise the interconnection(s) between these spheres of action. Muslim women are positioned within these complex relations and find obstacles and/or facilitators governing their capacity to act politically. The authors suggest that Muslim women’s interest in politics, knowledge of it and participation in both institutional and informal politics is higher than expected. This book will appeal to students and scholars of politics, sociology, gender studies and social anthropology, and will also be of use to policy makers and practitioners in the field of gender and ethno-religious/ethno-cultural policy.

Book Synopsis Violence against Women and Ethnicity: Commonalities and Differences across Europe by : Monika Schröttle
Download or read book Violence against Women and Ethnicity: Commonalities and Differences across Europe written by Monika Schröttle and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together both: theory and practice on minority/migrant women and gendered violence. The interplay of gender, ethnicity, religion, class, generation and sexuality in shaping the lives, experiences and choices of minority/migrant women affected by violence has not always been adequately theorised within much of the existing writing on violence against women. Feminist theory, especially the insights provided by the concept of intersectionality, are central to the editors’ conceptual frameworks.

Download or read book Gender Orders Unbound? written by Ilse Lenz and published by Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years, the modernisation of gender relations has been dynamic and comprehensive, shaped by the conflicting forces of globalisation as well as women’s movements around the world. As the patterns of segregation and discrimination of the classical industrial gender order erode, new complexities and contentions in gender relations emerge at various sites such as politics, work and families. The main aim of the book is to trace formal as well as informal gender contracts as they emerge in everyday life and also in new norms and regulations set by states and enterprises. Core issues are the chances and the barriers for equality and new forms of gender reciprocity and solidarity.

Book Synopsis Labour Markets Performance and Migration Flows in Arab Mediterranean Countries: National background papers Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) by : European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs
Download or read book Labour Markets Performance and Migration Flows in Arab Mediterranean Countries: National background papers Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) written by European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, which analyzes the key labor market determinants of migration flows from selected Arab Mediterranean Countries (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and the Occupied Palestinian Territories) finds that employment in AMCs is a major challenge for the region - and for Europe - in the next 10 to 15 years. Immediate action is needed because the status quo risks causing permanent damage to the development prospects of those countries. The AMCs' public policies are currently ill equipped to face the challenge. Labor migration remains a key feature of the labor markets in these countries - yet cannot by itself solve the labor market challenges there. The study makes a number of recommendations including: upgrading the statistics available and conducting further in-depth analysis; upgrading education and training systems; mainstreaming the policy goal of job creation and higher productivity; promoting active labor market policies; creating incentives to hire new graduates and women; creating incentives to transform informal into formal employment; and establishing social protection systems guaranteeing universal coverage, with the emphasis on worker rather than job protection. It also recommends that the EU upgrade its existing framework for AMC migration not only as a unilateral strategy, but as a cooperative framework for true co-development.--Publisher's description.
