Book excerpt: Feminist Stylistics introduces readers to a range of issues and skills in the analysis of texts from a feminist perspective. Sarah Mills uses close language study and linguistic theory to set out the rationale for feminist text analysis. She examines sexism, political correctness, reader positioning, narrative, agency, discourse, character and role analysis - and sets the examination of literary texts alongside texts such as newspapers, pop songs and advertisements. Feminist Stylistics presumes no prior knowledge of either feminist or stylistic theory. Each chapter shows how the issue has been discussed in stylistics, and goes on to provide a feminist theoretical framework or critique. This sustained account of feminist stylistics includes an extensive bibliography and numerous suggestions for further work. Feminist Stylistics is an essential text for anyone interested in discussing the language and the gendering of texts.

Book excerpt: This accessible textbook hinges on the central assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Grammar, introducing students to the analytical tools they need to approach Stylistics, an essential area in language analysis. The author verifies the claim that alterations in style, triggered by different cognitive processes, reflect alterations in meaning, and shows how they are employed to achieve particular effects in context. The book links theory with practice, aiming both to acquaint students with the cognitive principles that account for stylistic expressions, and to provide them with the tools and techniques to conduct their own analyses. The textbook explores and explains how writers use the resources of language to create meaning, and how readers interpret texts. It will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students on courses in English Linguistics, as well as those working on other languages and in related areas such as Composition and Creative Writing.

Book excerpt: This book examines overlaps, differences, and complementarities between narratology and stylistics, and shows the consequences of this examination for the practical analysis of prose narrative. Narratology identifies discourse as one of its two main objects of study (story being the other), and stylistics, of course, designates style as its concern. Too often, however, work in each of these fields proceeds without attention to developments in the other. This book corrects that situation by looking beneath the superficial similarities between the “discourse” of narratology and the “style” of fictional stylistics. The author shows that the two seemingly interchangeable terms actually refer to different textual elements. For example, both narratology and stylistics identify point of view as an important element of discourse and style, respectively, but each approach conceives of it differently and thus analyzes it differently. This book argues that the different analyses are complementary and shows how they can be brought together. This synthesis leads to richer conceptions of point of view as well as more comprehensive and precise analyses of its functions and effects in individual narratives. For its theoretical and interpretive contributions, this book will appeal to scholars and students in narrative studies, literary stylistics, and literary theory and criticism.
