More specifically, this study examined school climate as it relates to student academic achievement, attendance, and disciplinary referrals. Participants consisted of 29 females and 14 males in grades 6, 7 and 8, and their parents, from a rural middle school located in upstate New York. Schhool climate was measured using the Student version of the Yale Child Study School Development Program, School Climate Survey-Revised Version (Emmons, Haynes, & Comer, 2002). Parents reported on their child's school performance. Data analysis consisted of a One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Pearson Product-Moment Correlations, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. Results indicated that student-teacher relations are related to academeic achievement and that student interpersonal relationhsips affect whether students attend school. Developmentally, students at the start of middle school have a greater perception that teachers treat them fairly. As they grow older this belief decreases."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this explanatory quantitative study was to determine if relationships exist between principal gender, teachers' perceptions of the school climate, and the suspension rates of high school students in a large consolidated district in the mid-South. The research analyzed a single academic year, 2015-16, within the subject district. The study sample consisted of 20 high schools with similar characteristics. Ten of the high schools have a female principal and 10 of the high schools have a male principal. The independent variables of the study were principal gender and teachers' perceptions of the school climate; dependent variables were the number of suspensions and the number of expulsions per student during the 2015-16 academic year. The research involved conducting independent samples t tests and Pearson's correlations to analyze the data. Results revealed no statistical difference among measures of the dependent variables between groups. Nonetheless, relatively large mean differences and p value between principal gender and number of suspensions (high schools led by male principals had .583 suspensions per student and high schools led by female principals had .387 suspensions per student, p = .15) and a moderate correlation with a relatively low p value (r = .40, p = .073) between a measure of school climate and number of expulsions, indicate a possible Type II error. Given this mix of statistical results and possible error, the research concludes with a recommendation for further research.

The study sought to examine the differences in achievement levels, as measured by students' MSA scores and school climate measures in Title I and non-Title I schools. Survey research methodology was used to identify school climate. The school environment survey was administered to students in the 20 elementary schools in grades three and five. The survey measured 5 dimensions of climate: welcoming environment; physical environment; discipline; nurturing learning environment; and diversity and commonality. In a setting where the median household income is above {dollar}90,000, where resources are abundant in the schools, and where 90% of the students who graduate continue with their education, the findings of this research showed support for the following conclusions. Despite the affluence in this school system: (1) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by the state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test in Title I elementary schools in comparison to non-Title I elementary schools, (2) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by a state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test based on gender, (3) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by a state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test based on ethnicity, (4) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students in Title I elementary schools versus non-Title elementary schools, (5) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students based on gender, and (6) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students based on ethnicity. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal comparative research study was to determine if there was a significant difference in teachers’ perceptions of school climate between high performing schools and low performing schools. The study investigated teachers' perceptions of overall school climate, collaboration, decision-making, instructional innovation, student relations, and school resources. Data was collected from 75 teachers in three high performing schools and 75 teachers in three low performing schools from one school district. The Revised School Level Environment Questionnaire (Revised SLEQ) was the instrument utilized in the study to measure teachers' perceptions of overall school climate in addition to the five aforementioned subscales. The results obtained from the 150 surveys were analyzed using a multiple independent samples t tests to identify if there was a statistical difference between group means on the Revised SLEQ. This study is significant because it provide individuals in the field of education with evidence that their perceptions might be impacted by the academic achievement in their schools. The study was also intended to provide evidence that perceptions play a very important role in the overall effectiveness of an educational institution. The study revealed that there was a significant difference between the two populations with regards to overall school climate, student relations, school resources, instructional innovation while there was not a significant difference with regards to decision making and collaboration. Future research is recommended to investigate teachers’ perceptions of school climate with the incorporation of a larger population and the incorporation of more recent data.

Book excerpt: In recent years educational settings have offered increased attention to relationships between students emotional and physiological health and academic achievement. Some authors have reported high prevalence rates of social, emotional, academic and cognitive impacts of traumatic experiences on students in the school environment. To address these issues, a trauma-informed school culture (TISC) can provide an environment in which students who have been exposed to trauma are supported in a variety of manners such as relationship building and developing resilience where they are academically successful. Depending on the population and type of trauma investigated, reports show that 50-75% of youth in the United States are exposed to trauma. The consequences of such exposure is often exhibited in students' learning and behaviors, and the need to understand impact of trauma on students' learning and school behaviors has led to a push for effective trauma-informed treatment approaches in school systems. A review of current trauma literature shows a lack of research which assessed students' perceptions of school safety and positive school climate, especially as they relate to academic performance and school attendance. To address this gap, the present study was conducted to expand upon previous work which assessed a Midwest middle school district's development of a trauma-informed school culture, with the intent to measure student-reported perceptions of safety and positive school climate after delivering a trauma-informed professional development course to school staff. Two separate exploratory factor analyses showed that survey data collected from two student cohorts loaded similarly to create a 10-item measure of assessment for school safety and school climate. Cohort comparison analyses indicated a significant decrease in students' perceptions of school safety and positive school climate after delivery of a trauma-informed professional development intervention for staff at the target middle school. Additionally, findings showed that male students had more discipline incidents than did female students, and a significant increase in grade point average was observed between cohorts. However, it is not possible to directly attribute this increase in academic performance to the professional development. Overall, study findings led to the conclusion that the professional development as provided to school staff was not effective in increasing students' perceptions of school safety and positive school climate as expected. Implications for leadership, policy and practice are provided, along with suggestions for future research and for improving the efficacy of trauma-informed professional development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to study the perceptions of the five dimensions of school climate, the effect school safety and violence had on the teachers' perceptions of school climate, and the role school climate played on the teachers' commitment to their professional responsibilities. This research study was conducted at one high school in south central Pennsylvania and utilized the California School Climate Survey, published by WestEd, an open-ended question, and one-on-one interviews conducted by the researcher. The survey participation rate among the teachers was 77%, the open-ended question was answered by 67% of the participating teachers, and 15% of the participating teachers completed one-on-one interviews. School climate factors such as safety, relationships, teaching and learning, the institutional environment, and the school improvement process were studied in order to identify areas within the school that bolstered morale and improved the climate as well as areas that decreased the climate and need improvement. Results from the three methods of data collection indicated that a majority of teachers felt safe at this school, 56% of the participants stated that safety related issues did not affect their perceptions of school climate, and school safety either increased commitment or did not affect it at all. In addition, the teachers maintained great working relationships with one another, which increased commitment. Most teachers wanted academic success for all students, but not all teachers believed academic success to be possible. The teachers' commitment to teaching increased as a result of the need for academic improvement. The new school building and materials aided student learning, which increased commitment; and the school improvement initiatives were overwhelming, which decreased teacher commitment.
