The nurse manager is addressed in current research as being in a pivotal position to affect nurse retention. Research has focused on the skills necessary for nurse managers to affect turnover; however, there is little research addressing the pressure placed upon the nurse manager as he or she struggles to maintain the nursing workforce. This qualitative study explored the lived experience of feeling overwhelmed by 6 nurse managers currently working in an inpatient hospital environment. Interviews were analyzed using a modified version of the descriptive-interpretive phenomenological method as described by van Manen. Four essential themes were identified: there is nobody there, caught in the middle, feeling that you are a failure, and the inability to do. One paradigm case exhibited all of the essential themes. The essence of the nurse managerâs lived experience of feeling overwhelmed is helplessness evidenced by constant unresolved conflicts in a complex, chaotic organization with changing expectations, unmet personal fulfillment, and constant turbulence. It is personal conflict related to the desire to impact positive patient and staff outcomes--to make a difference, while feeling that they fall short of the organizationâs and their own personal expectations. Theoretical implications related to Quantum theory, Emotional Intelligence, and Rogerâs Science of Unitary Human Beings are discussed in order to highlight current theoretical literature pertinent to the nurse managerâs experience of feeling overwhelmed. Implications for research, practice, and education are discussed as facility leadership considers the experiences of this group of nurse managers. This study will better inform hospital administrators, nursing leadership, and staff nurses of the lived experience of this group of nurse managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse Manager Engagement: Strategies for Excellence and Commitment is based on the groundbreaking and highly regarded national "Nurse Engagement Study" project funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The book builds upon the key ideas in the study by including examples from Dr. Mackoff’s conversations and key teaching points from her work with several hundred nurse managers in the three years following this innovative study. Nurse Manager Engagement offers a groundbreaking approach—one that distinguishes it from other nurse management books by a focus on building a model of the solution rather than a description of the problem. It focuses on the crucial role of the nurse manager in engaging staff nurses and building a pipeline for future nurse leadership.

Book excerpt: The most comprehensive of its kind, Nursing Theorists and Their Work, 8th Edition provides an in-depth look at 39 theorists of historical, international, and significant importance. Each chapter features a clear, consistent presentation of a key nursing philosophy or theory. Case studies, critical thinking activities, and in-depth objective critiques of nursing theories help bridge the gap between theory and application. Critical Thinking Activities at the end of each theorist chapter help you to process the theory presented and apply it to personal and hypothetical practice situations. A case study at the end of each theorist chapter puts the theory into a larger perspective, demonstrating how it can be applied to practice. A Brief Summary in each theorist chapter helps you review for tests and confirm your comprehension. A Major Concepts & Definitions box included in each theorist chapter outlines the theory’s most significant ideas and clarifies content-specific vocabulary. Each theorist chapter is written by a scholar specializing in that particular theorist’s work, often having worked closely with the theorists, to provide the most accurate and complete information possible. Beginning chapters provide a strong foundation on the history and philosophy of science, logical reasoning, and the theory development process. Diagrams for theories help you visualize and better understand inherently abstract concepts. Pictures of theorists, as well as a listing of contact information for each individual, enables you to contact the source of information directly. Theorist chapters have been reviewed and edited by the theorist, validating the accounts set forth in the text for currency and accuracy. An extensive bibliography at the conclusion of each theorist chapter outlines numerous primary and secondary sources of information, ideal for both undergraduate and graduate research projects. A new chapter introduces the theorist Afaf Meleis and covers her Transition Theory that has helped shape the theoretical development of nursing. Points for further study at the end of each chapter direct you to assets available for additional information. Need to know information is highlighted in at-a-glance summary boxes throughout to help you quickly review key concepts. Personal quotes from the theorists help you gain insight and make each complex theory more memorable. Updated references include only published works to ensure accuracy and credibility.

Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.

It not only examines in depth their experiences, roadblocks to successful employment, and misperceptions surrounding them, but also provides viable solutions for creating positive attitudes towards them and a welcoming work environment that fosters hiring and retention. From the perspectives and actual voices of nurses with disabilities, nurse leaders, nurse administrators, and patients, the book identifies nurses with disabilities (including sensory, musculoskeletal, emotional, and mental health issues), discusses why they choose to leave nursing or hide their disabilities, and analyzes how their disabilities may influence career choices.
