Book Synopsis Feel-Bad Postfeminism by : Catherine McDermott
Download or read book Feel-Bad Postfeminism written by Catherine McDermott and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Feel-Bad Postfeminism, Catherine McDermott provides crucial insight into what growing up during empowerment postfeminism feels like, and outlines the continuing postfeminist legacy of resilience in girlhood coming-of-age narratives. McDermott's analysis of Gone Girl (2012), Girls (2012–2017) and Appropriate Behaviour (2012) illuminates a major cultural turn in which the pleasures of postfeminist empowerment curdle into a profound sense of rage and resentment. By contrast, close examination of The Hunger Games (2008–2010), Girlhood (2014) and Catch Me Daddy (2014) reveals that contemporary genres are increasingly constructing girls as uniquely capable of resiliently overcoming and adapting to unforgiving social conditions. She develops an affective vocabulary to better understand contemporary modes of defiant, transformative and relational resilience, as well as a framework through which to expand on further modes that are specific to the genres they emerge within. Overall, the book suggests that exploration of the affective dimensions of girls' and women's culture can offer new insights into how coming-of-age, girlhood and femininity are culturally produced in the aftermath of postfeminism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well over a decade, half-baked analysis and phony science have been used by some feminists to side-track the women's movement into puritanical campaigns against sexual material and imaginative sexual exploration. Many feminists would say that this widely publicised version of feminism is itself sexist, and that the increasingly vocal anti-pornography campaigns are founded on theoretical dead-ends that have allowed feminists to deviate drastically from the basic goals of women's liberation.Bad Girls & Dirty Pictures puts these anti-sex, anti-porn arguments under the microscope of a more thorough and considered feminist analysis. It examines the flaws in the research that purports to prove the harm of pornography and warns against the continuing use of censorship by politicians and the moral right, as well as exposing the dangers of anti-porn feminist arguments.Contributions from a wide range of women, including sex workers and academics, remind us that pornography does not have a special place in our oppression, and that censorship must still be seen as dangerous enemy of women. Bad Girls & Dirty Pictures is a much-needed antidote to falsehoods, shabby thinking, and patronising sexism that have fuelled anti-pornography campaigns and misled the women's movement.

Book Synopsis Choosing a Self by : Shelley Budgeon
Download or read book Choosing a Self written by Shelley Budgeon and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's social context, characterized by fluidity, uncertainty, and individualism, the choices we make have become the main factor in the formation of our individual identities. This volume focuses on the production of self-identity by young women, who face a greater range of choices in their lives than ever before, and combines empirical interview data with cutting-edge theoretical perspectives. The author has interviewed a sample of women aged 16 to 21 in order to find out what being able to make choices means to them and how they view themselves and their lives within the cultural context of girl power. Their statements and experiences are analyzed and used to interrogate the ontological assumptions of post-structuralism, feminist theory, and reflexive modernization.
