Book Synopsis Feeding Ecology of and Lead Exposure in a Top Predator by : Mirjam Nadjafzadeh
Download or read book Feeding Ecology of and Lead Exposure in a Top Predator written by Mirjam Nadjafzadeh and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the feeding ecology of raptors has attracted the attention of many scientists, aspects such as diet selection and foraging strategy are still poorly understood. This is particularly true for large species such as the white-tailed eagle. Representative assessments of the contribution of food sources containing toxins such as lead to raptor diets are scarce but are essential for optimising conservation efforts. This dissertation investigated the feeding ecology of white-tailed eagles to shed light on the interaction of such top predators with their environment and to improve the conservation management of this lead-exposed species. A use of complementary methods identified the most effective approach for dietary investigations on free-ranging raptors. The findings revealed that the foraging strategy of white-tailed eagles is influenced by both individual and environmental factors and corresponds to an efficient food intake in terms of optimal foraging theory. The main sources of lead fragments that induce fatal lead poisoning are shot mammalian carcasses which constitute important alternative diet components for white-tailed eagles during the hunting season. One approach to solve the lead poisoning problem can be the use of lead-free bullets by hunters that fragment into sufficiently large particles which would be avoided by scavenging eagles and birds with similar feeding behaviour.

Download or read book Infant Feeding Practices written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s natural... It’s unsightly... It’s normal... It’s dangerous. To breastfeed or not? For millions of women around the world, this personal decision is influenced by numerous social, cultural, and health factors. Infant Feeding Practices is the first book to delve into these factors from a global perspective, revealing striking similarities and differences from country to country. Dispatches from Asia, Australia, Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. explore as wide a gamut of salient issues affecting feeding practices as traditional beliefs about colostrums, “breast is best” campaigns, partner attitudes, workplace culture, direct government intervention, and the pressure to be a “good mother.” Throughout these informative pages, women are seen balancing innovation and tradition to nurture healthy, thriving babies. A sampling of topics covered: • Policy versus practice in infant feeding. • Infant feeding in the age of AIDS. • Managing the lactating body: the view from the U.S. • Motherhood, work, and feeding. • The effects of migration on infant feeding. • From breastfeeding tradition to optimal breastfeeding practice. Infant Feeding Practices is a first-of-its-kind resource for researchers and practioners in maternal and child health, public health, global health, and cultural anthropology seeking empirical findings and culturally diverse information on this sensitive issue.

Download or read book Feeding the World written by Vaclav Smil and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-08-24 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A realistic yet encouraging look at how society can change in ways that will allow us to feed an expanding global population. This book addresses the question of how we can best feed the ten billion or so people who will likely inhabit the Earth by the middle of the twenty-first century. He asks whether human ingenuity can produce enough food to support healthy and vigorous lives for all these people without irreparably damaging the integrity of the biosphere. What makes this book different from other books on the world food situation is its consideration of the complete food cycle, from agriculture to post-harvest losses and processing to eating and discarding. Taking a scientific approach, Smil espouses neither the catastrophic view that widespread starvation is imminent nor the cornucopian view that welcomes large population increases as the source of endless human inventiveness. He shows how we can make more effective use of current resources and suggests that if we increase farming efficiency, reduce waste, and transform our diets, future needs may not be as great as we anticipate. Smil's message is that the prospects may not be as bright as we would like, but the outlook is hardly disheartening. Although inaction, late action, or misplaced emphasis may bring future troubles, we have the tools to steer a more efficient course. There are no insurmountable biophysical reasons we cannot feed humanity in the decades to come while easing the burden that modern agriculture puts on the biosphere.
Book Synopsis Economics of Feeding the Hungry by : Noel Russell
Download or read book Economics of Feeding the Hungry written by Noel Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As productivity expands to cater for population increase and shifting diets, many individuals remain hungry, whilst others suffer obesity, and significant amounts of food are wasted. Yet, this triple dilemma oversimplifies the underlying complexity. This book explores this complexity from an economics perspective, looking at the processes involved and the institutional structures that direct and constrain their interaction. After discussing alternative approaches to measuring hunger and food insecurity, this volume considers the four dimensions of food security: availability, affordability, utilization and stability. In summarising the main debates, issues and policy interventions, Russell discusses the problems of ensuring sufficient food in the face of ever-slowing growth in productivity and constraints on land and water. The problems of food affordability, the need for safety nets, and the need for poverty alleviation measures that reach excluded and disadvantaged groups is also discussed. This is alongside an exploration of issues related to food utilization and the problems of hidden hunger, obesity, food waste, and the interventions needed to relieve these problems. This volume is of great interest to those who study rural development, ecological economics and development economics, as well as policy makers who seek a better understanding of underlying processes, ongoing and emerging issues, and potentially relevant interventions.
