Book excerpt: Increased demand for products synthesized from corn starch, such as ethanol and high fructose corn syrup, has resulted in an increased supply of corn milling co-products, such as wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS ) and wet corn gluten feed (WCGF). These products differ in chemical and physical properties from corn as well as common forages. While the effects of feeding corn milling co-products on intake and milk production in lactating dairy cattle has been researched, effects on nitrogen utilization have not been studied in detail. Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of feeding WDGS and WCGF on digestibility, ruminal microbial protein synthesis, and nitrogen excretion. ^ Experiment 1 examined the potential complementary nutritional effects of feeding WDGS and WCGF together and to explore the means of maximizing total inclusion of co-products in rations for dairy cattle. Total tract N digestibility and microbial protein synthesis increased for the ration containing WDGS and WCGF. Fecal N excretion did not increase, while urinary N increased compared the control; however, manure N excretion was similar. Treatments did not differ in 4% fat-corrected milk. Results suggest that dairy rations can be balanced to include a 30% blend of WDGS and WCGF while maintaining similar manure N excretion and milk production as compared to a ration without co-products. ^ Experiment 2 examined the effects of forage type when feeding high levels of WDGS. Lactating cows were fed rations varying in levels of WDGS (0 or 25% DM) and forage type (corn silage or alfalfa silage). Microbial protein synthesis increased for rations containing WDGS regardless of forage type. Fecal N excretion was not different among treatments, but compared to a zero control, urinary and manure N was reduced with WDGS. Both the inclusion of WDGS and alfalfa silage improved 4% fat-corrected milk production. This research demonstrated rations can be formulated to contain 25% WDGS and result in reduced N excretion regardless of forage type, while improving milk production.^

With that, the new product originates from the dry milling process which is unlike the traditional process as nitrogenous based particles are concentrated from the residual fiber by sieving post fermentation. Although high protein coproducts have been available since the mid 2000’s. These new products must be evaluated for chemical composition so that they can be accurately described in feed libraries that are used in commercial ration formulation software. While chemical composition provides us an initial and useful description of a feed product, in vivo nitrogen and energy balance studies are needed to examine the utilization and efficiency of converting the nutrients within a given feed product to milk. Therefore, it is integral to analyze both components for accurate and effective ration formulation in the field. The first experiment analyzed 10 samples of a new high protein coproduct that were obtained from a singular production site over one months period for chemical composition and nutrient availability. Samples were analyzed for DM, CP, Soluble CP, ADICP, NDICP, ADF, aNDF, lignin, EE, sugar, starch, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids. Also, aNDF was determined for the samples by 3 different commercial fiber systems including refluxing method, bagged sample method, and a confined refluxing and filtering method. For nutrient availability, RUP was determined with in situ and mobile procedures and NDF digestibility at 24, 30, 48, and 240 h. Total tract NDF iii digestibility was also estimated. Results suggest that the new high protein coproduct contains increased concentration of protein and lysine and reduced fiber when compared to a traditional DDGS. The second experiment utilized twelve multiparous lactating Jersey cattle in a triplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design. Animals were assigned to 4 different treatments diets with increasing inclusion from 0 % to 8 % of the new high protein coproduct replacing non-enzymatically browned soybean meal. The experiment aims to test the effects of formulation of the new product as well as quantify the whole animal energy and nitrogen balance. Results indicate that increasing inclusion of the new high protein coproduct increased dietary fatty acids. However, it had no effect nutrient digestibility. The utilization of energy for NEL increased with increasing inclusion of the HPCoP with subsequent increases in milk fat production. Results indicate that the new high protein coproduct is able to effectively replace non-enzymatically browned soybean meal in lactating dairy rations.

Book excerpt: Corn milling (co)products (n=120) were evaluated for their neutral detergent fiber residue (NDR) and neutral detergent insoluble protein (NDIP) ruminal degradation rates using several in vitro methods. Two (co)products (BPX-DDGS and HP-DDG) were fed to lactating dairy cows (n=44) to evaluate effects on milk production. The Cornell-Penn-Miner Institute (CPM) Dairy model was used to formulate diets and predict milk production. In vitro determined NDR and NDIP rates and were compared to CPM-dairy feed library values, and model predictions were compared with observed milk production. Additionally, BPX-DDGS and HP-DDG were defatted and compared with their intact forms for fermentation characteristics using the in vitro gas production (IVGP) technique. Fermentations were analyzed for rumen bacterial population shifts using the 16S rDNA bacterial tag encoded FLX amplicon pyrosequencing (bTEFAP) technique. Lastly, a novel ruminal in vitro method was described to measure the soluble protein fraction of feeds, with adjustments for microbial contamination. Fermentation rate of the NDR of BPX-DDGS and HP-DDG (0.08 and 0.07 h^-1, respectively) and NDIP degradation rates (0.07 and 0.06 h^-1, respectively) were similar to CPM-dairy feed library NDR and NDIP rates of corn distillers grain (0.07 and 0.05 h^-1, respectively). Model predictions using standard and in vitro determined values did not differ. As BPX-DDGS decreased and HP-DDG increased in the diet, observed milk production tended to decrease linearly (P = 0.08). There was a cubic effect for milk fat percent (P = 0.03) and a cubic trend for milk fat yield (P = 0.09). Milk protein yield also tended to decrease linearly (P = 0.06). CPM-dairy model prediction accuracies were less than 50 percent. Defatting (co)products reduced lag time and fractional rate of fermentation by at least half for BPX-DDG, and had no effect on HP-DDG. Defatting both (co)products increased the fibrolytic (26.8 to 38.7 percent) and proteolytic (26.1 to 37.2 percent) bacterial guild populations and decreased the lactate-utilizing bacterial guild (3.06 to 1.44 percent). The novel ruminal in vitro method determined that the specific activity of ammonia production was not different among (co)products. However, results were within numerical range of previously used methodologies.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The effect of feeding corn by-products on cow reproductive performance, as well as offspring growth and reproductive performance has been investigated through four separate studies. The first study was conducted to evaluate the use of dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS) in beef cow diets during early lactation on both dam and heifer offspring growth and reproductive performance. Three diets, consisting of 0, 2.5 or 4.7 kg/d DM of DDGS were formulated to be isocaloric but the DDGS diets exceeded protein requirements. Milk production was not different, however, milk components increased with the addition of DDGS. Resumption of cyclicity of dams, as well as days of age at puberty in heifer offspring were not different. However, while not statistically different, time-artificial insemination (TAI) rates of both cow and heifer offspring were numerically improved with the addition of DDGS in the diet. Plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) concentrations in the cows followed the trend of being higher with increasing levels of DDGS. While PUN concentrations did reach levels that are considered detrimental to fertility, they did not seem to have a negative impact on conception.In the second study, the use of corn gluten feed (CGF) in dam diets and its effects on their reproductive performance was investigated. Three diets, consisting of 0, 3.3 or 6.7 kg/d DM of CGF were formulated to be isocaloric but the CGF diets exceeded protein requirements. Milk production and milk components were not different with the exception of fat, which tended to be greater in the high CGF treatment. Resumption of cyclicity and TAI conception rates were not improved when CGF was added to the diet. Plasma urea nitrogen concentrations did not approached what would have been considered detrimental to fertility.The third study was conducted to evaluate feeding DDGS during the second trimester or the second and third trimester (3.0 or 3.5 kg/d DDGS, respectively), on heifer offspring reproductive performance. Growth performance of heifer offspring did not differ among treatments. There were no differences in TAI conception rates in heifer offspring from dams fed DDGS but, dominant follicles tended to be larger in heifer offspring from dams fed DDGS during the second trimester. Due to the lack of improvement in reproductive performance in this study, it has been hypothesized that lactation may be a more critical time point for improvements in heifer offspring reproductive performance.The fourth study followed the hypothesis of the third study. Because heifer offspring reproductive performance was positively impacted when dams were fed DDGS during early lactation, evaluation of dams fed DDGS during early lactation on bull offspring performance was investigated. Bull offspring growth performance was not impacted by dam diets during early lactation. Scrotal circumference, testosterone concentrations and semen analysis were used to evaluate days of age at puberty, however, puberty attainment in bull offspring was also not impacted. In summary, feeding DDGS as a primary source of dietary energy during early lactation had a positive impact on both cow and heifer offspring reproductive performance, but this does not seem to be true for bull offspring.

Book excerpt: Corn condensed distillers solubles (CDS) is a protein and energy dense by-product from dry-milled production of ethanol. Recent oil extraction has posed modifications to the nutrient profile of CDS, suggesting that de-oiled CDS needs to be re-evaluated in beef cattle diets. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of CDS in high-concentrate diets, forage-based diets, as well as evaluate the effects of CDS on diet digestibility and rumen fermentation parameters in forage-based diets. Feeding CDS in high-concentrate diets up to 20% of the diet DM or in combination with wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) improved performance and resulted in greater energy value compared to corn. Feeding values of 20% CDS or the combination of 16% CDS and 20% WDGS were 147 and 129% compared to corn, respectively. Feeding CDS in forage-based diets up to 40% of the diet DM diminished performance and resulted in a lesser energy value compared to corn. Linear decreases were observed in total tract digestibility of NDF and the acetate to propionate ratio in rumen fluid. Double-cropped forages following corn harvest offer livestock producers an opportunity to extend their grazing season on high quality forage in the fall. Additionally, crop producers may benefit from the implementation of grazing animals due to added soil nutrients and removal of residue. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of double-cropped oats following corn silage (CS) or high-moisture corn (HMC) on calf gains, forage production, and subsequent cash crop yields. Oats seeded after CS produced more forage biomass than oats seeded after HMC. Both treatments produced high quality oats (22% CP, 39% NDF, and 24% ADF averaged across treatments). Calf gains were greater grazing oats following CS compared to HMC at 1.10 and 0.84 kg / d, respectively. Across 1-yr of data, subsequent cash crop yields were not different for HMC and soybeans with increased CS yields in both covered/grazed and non-covered/non-grazed treatments compared to the covered/non-grazed treatment..
