Book excerpt: Underactuated multibody systems are intriguing mechatronic systems, as they posses fewer control inputs than degrees of freedom. Some examples are modern light-weight flexible robots and articulated manipulators with passive joints. This book investigates such underactuated multibody systems from an integrated perspective. This includes all major steps from the modeling of rigid and flexible multibody systems, through nonlinear control theory, to optimal system design. The underlying theories and techniques from these different fields are presented using a self-contained and unified approach and notation system. Subsequently, the book focuses on applications to large multibody systems with multiple degrees of freedom, which require a combination of symbolical and numerical procedures. Finally, an integrated, optimization-based design procedure is proposed, whereby both structural and control design are considered concurrently. Each chapter is supplemented by illustrated examples.

Book excerpt: In the 60's, control, signals and systems had a common linear algebraic background and, according to their evolution, their respective backgrounds have now dramatically differed. Recovering such a common background, especially in the nonlinear context, is currently a fully open question. The role played by physical models, finite or infinite dimensional, in this hypothetical convergence is extensively discussed in this book. The discussion does not only take place on a theoretical basis but also in the light of two wide classes of applications, among the most active in the current industrially oriented researches: - Electrical and Mechatronical systems; - Chemical Processes and systems appearing in Life Sciences. In this perspective, this book is a contribution to the enhancement of the dialogue between theoretical laboratories and more practically oriented ones and industries. This book is a collection of articles that have been presented by leading international experts at a series of three workshops of a Bernoulli program entitled “Advances in the Theory of Control, Signals and Systems, with Physical Modeling” hosted by the Bernoulli Centre of EPFL during the first semester of 2009. It provides researchers, engineers and graduate students with an unprecedented collection of topics and internationally acknowledged top-quality works and surveys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the authors’ recent advances, this book focuses on a class of nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties/disturbances and discusses their typical control problems. It aims to provide a comprehensive view of the nonrecursive control theory and application guidelines. Various applications on the nonrecursive synthesis of complex nonlinear systems not only greatly simplify the control design process, weaken the system assumptions, and reduce the conservatism of gain selection, but also realize the essential detachment of control law design and Lyapunov function-based stability analysis. Therefore, different from the classical recursive control design methods, it is of significance to study the synthesis of nonlinear systems from the perspective of a new nonrecursive control framework. This book discusses the following typical control problems: theoretical background, homogeneous systems theory review, nonrecursive robust control design, nonrecursive adaptive control design, nonrecursive general dynamic predictive control, disturbance estimation and attenuation, nonrecursive stability analysis, implementation theory and real-life applications to series elastic actuators, DC microgrids, and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) systems under the proposed nonrecursive synthesis framework. This book will be a great reference for scholars and students in the field of automation and control. It will also be a useful source for control engineers and those working on anti-disturbance control, nonlinear output regulation, nonsmooth control, and other related topics.

A novel gain control design method is proposed, which greatly simplifies the construction procedure of controller for strict-feedback nonlinear systems. The control design problem of strict-feedback nonlinear systems is converted into the determination problem of gain parameters or the construction of dynamic gain equations. Therefore, the tedious iterative design procedure is effectively avoided. This book can be used as a reference for researchers in the field of control theory and engineers seeking advanced methods in practical control applications.

This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variable gain control method is a new construction technique for the control of nonlinear systems. By properly conducting state transformation that depends on the variable gains, the control design problem of nonlinear systems can be transformed into a gain construction problem, thus effectively avoiding the tedious iterative design procedure. Different from the classical backstepping method and forwarding design method, the structure of variable gain control is simpler in the sense that fewer design parameters are required, facilitating the improvement of system control performance. To highlight the learning, research, and promotion of variable gain control, Variable Gain Control and Its Applications in Energy Conversion is written based on the research results of peers at home and abroad and combining our latest research. This book presents innovative technologies for designing variable gain controllers for nonlinear systems. It systematically describes the origin and principles of variable gain control for nonlinear systems, focuses on the controller design and stability analysis, and reflects the latest research. In addition, variable gain control methods applied to energy conversion are also included. Discussion remarks are provided in each chapter highlighting new approaches and contributions to emphasize the novelty of the presented design and analysis methods. In addition, simulation results are given in each chapter to show the effectiveness of these methods. It can be used as a reference book or a textbook for students with some background in feedback control systems. Researchers, graduate students, and engineers in the fields of control, information, renewable energy generation, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, and others will benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: Optimal Linear Controller Design for Periodic Inputs proposes a general design methodology for linear controllers facing periodic inputs which applies to all feedforward control, estimated disturbance feedback control, repetitive control and feedback control. The design methodology proposed is able to reproduce and outperform the major current design approaches, where this superior performance stems from the following properties: uncertainty on the input period is explicitly accounted for, periodic performance being traded-off against conflicting design objectives and controller design being translated into a convex optimization problem, guaranteeing the efficient computation of its global optimum. The potential of the design methodology is illustrated by both numerical and experimental results.

Book excerpt: The work in this dissertation summarizes advancements in the theory of finite-time stabilization with robustness and finite-time safety for ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and finite-time regulation and estimation for partial differential equations (PDEs). The control techniques herein deliver finite-time closed-loop performance within a user-prescribed time that is independent of initial conditions, and are thus assigned the preface "prescribed-time". Prescribed-time performance is important in mission-critical or safety-critical applications, where success of the control design is assessed over a predetermined finite time horizon. The prescribed-time stabilization designs herein employ time-varying gains that grow and multiply states that decay. When the state measurement is subject to a disturbance, the multiplication with growing gains threatens to result in unbounded control inputs. For linear and nonlinear high-dimensional Euler-Lagrange ODEs, it is shown that the control inputs remain bounded and a particular input-to-state property relative to the disturbance is guaranteed under a structural conditions on the disturbance. Moreover, it is shown that input delays can be compensated for with appropriate designs. The tools created to achieve these results combine time-varying gains with finite-dimensional backstepping. Similar time-varying designs lend prescribed-time performance to infinite-dimensional systems. It is shown that these designs can concurrently solve the dual problems of prescribed-time stabilization and estimation by boundary control and measurements to generate output feedback for reaction-diffusion, Schrödinger, and Euler-Bernoulli beam PDEs. The time-varying approach extends to the stabilizing and output tracking problems for pairs of coupled reaction-diffusion PDEs, as well as to a system consisting of linear ODEs in series with reaction-diffusion PDEs, and to input-delay compensation for PDEs. The methodologies developed to handle PDEs build upon infinite-dimensional backstepping by adding nontrivial time-varying gains, as well as leveraging motion planning and differential flatness techniques for PDEs. Safety in dynamical systems can be pursued using control barrier functions (CBFs) to enforce safety-constraints over an infinite time horizon, whereas prescribed-time safety (PTSf) designs leverage the time-varying gains developed herein to enforce safety only for a finite time of interest to the user. This work applies prescribed-time stabilizing designs in the context of safety to achieve PTSf by combining time-varying backstepping and CBF-based safety via quadratic programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have developed a methodology for control of nonlinear systems in the presence of long delays, with large and rapid variation in the actuation or sensing path, or in the presence of long delays affecting the internal state of a system. In addition to control synthesis, they introduce tools to quantify the performance and the robustness properties of the designs provided in the book. The book is based on the concept of predictor feedback and infinite-dimensional backstepping transformation for linear systems and the authors guide the reader from the basic ideas of the concept?with constant delays only on the input?all the way through to nonlinear systems with state-dependent delays on the input as well as on system states. Readers will find the book useful because the authors provide elegant and systematic treatments of long-standing problems in delay systems, such as systems with state-dependent delays that arise in many applications. In addition, the authors give all control designs by explicit formulae, making the book especially useful for engineers who have faced delay-related challenges and are concerned with actual implementations and they accompany all control designs with Lyapunov-based analysis for establishing stability and performance guarantees.
