This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses interpretive issues in the 28 pieces of Mompou's four-volume Música Callada (1959-67) within the context of musical, literary, and philosophical influences. Mompou's piano miniatures reflect the concentrated expression of his primitivista philosophy. Música Callada loosely translates as Silent Music and is taken from the Spanish mystic and poet St. John of the Cross. The author considers harmonic and melodic observations; poetic and philosophical references; Mompou's thoughts on the work; and recorded performances by Herbert Henck, Joseph Colom, and the composer/pianist himself. The author's purpose is to explain Mompou's style and aesthetic and to promote his compositions as a more frequent choice for piano recitals.

Orringer uses both literary and musical analysis to study sung poems in twentieth-century Spain. In nine chapters, each focusing on an individual sung poem, song cycle, or various poems set by the same composer, Orringer enriches and deepens interpretations of the art-songs by comparing the poet's vision to the composer's. In examining composers such as Falla, Turina, Mompou, Toldrà, Rodrigo, Montsalvatge, and Rodolfo Halffter, Orringer shows that Spanish art-song is an exceptional product of Spain’s Silver Age and reveals a new way to understand and appreciate poems set to music in twentieth-century Spain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.

Book excerpt: First published in 1980, Traditions of the Classical Guitar has been described as the first book to examine in detail the many traditions of one of today's most popular instruments. With its central focus on Andres Segovia's pioneering work in establishing the guitar as an international concert instrument, it goes on to examine in detail its subsequent developments with reference to great artists such as Bream, Williams, Diaz and Yepes.Traditions of the Classical Guitar continues to be a classic of twentieth-century guitar scholarship, offering a challenging assessment to perceptions of the guitar's progress throughout the ages. It is also a timely reminder of the glorious years of Segovia's concert career between 1909 and 1987; Segovia himself said of the work: "e;Graham Wade has shown his love for the guitar from the first page to the last; true love and understanding"e;.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the western classical tradition, composers have influenced and been influenced by their students and teachers. Many musicians frequently add to their personal acclaim by naming their teachers and the lineage through which they were taught. Until now, the relationships between composers have remained uncataloged and understudied, but with enough research, it is possible to document entire schools of composition. Composer Genealogies: A Compendium of Composers, Their Teachers, and Their Students is the first volume to gather the genealogies of more than seventeen thousand classical composers in a single volume. Functioning as its own fully cross-referenced index, this volume lists composers and their dates, followed by their teachers and notable students. A short introduction presents the parameters by which composers were selected and provides a survey of the literature available for further study. Gathering records and information from reference books, university websites, obituaries, articles, composers’ websites, and even direct contact with some composers, Pfitzinger creates a valuable resource for music researchers, composers, and performers.
