Book excerpt: "Emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from industrial and commercial refrigeration or air conditioning systems are caused by releases during equipment installation, when charging equipment with refrigerant, either initially or when re-filling (top-up), and leaks from equipment operations. Lowering the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants used in these systems in Canada ensures that the associated impacts on climate change from unavoidable equipment leaks are minimized to the extent possible. The federal offset protocol for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Refrigeration Systems is intended for use by a proponent undertaking a project to transition away from refrigerants with high GWP values in their commercial and industrial refrigeration or air conditioning systems, in order to generate offset credits under the Canadian Greenhouse Gas Offset Credit System Regulations (Regulations). The requirements contained in this protocol are part of the Regulations and must be read in conjunction with provisions in the Regulations. ... This protocol is designed to ensure that, together with requirements in the Regulations, the project generates GHG emission reductions that are real, additional, quantified, verified, unique and permanent. The protocol is also developed in accordance with the principles of ISO 14064-2:2019 Greenhouse gases - Part 2 - Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements to ensure reported GHG emission reductions are relevant, complete, consistent, accurate, transparent, and conservative"--Introduction, page 1.

Book excerpt: "Methane (CH4) emissions from landfills are generated by the anaerobic decomposition of organic material in the buried waste. The installation of a landfill gas (LFG) recovery and destruction system enables the landfill CH4 to be converted into biogenic carbon dioxide, instead of allowing it to be passively released to the atmosphere. The Landfill Methane Recovery and Destruction protocol is intended for use by a proponent undertaking a project to actively recover and destroy LFG to generate offset credits under the Canadian Greenhouse Gas Offset Credit System Regulations. The proponent must follow the methodology and requirements set out in this protocol to quantify and report greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions generated by the eligible project activities. This protocol is designed to ensure the project generates GHG emission reductions that are real, additional, quantified, verified, unique and permanent. The protocol is also developed in accordance with the principles of ISO 14064-2:2019 Greenhouse gases - Part 2 - Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements to ensure reported GHG emission reductions generated as a result of implementing the project activities are relevant, complete, consistent, accurate, transparent, and conservative"--Introduction, page 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change is a natural process that currently appears to be strongly influenced by human activities, which increase atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG). Agriculture contributes about 20% of the world’s global radiation forcing from carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, and produces 50% of the methane and 70% of the nitrous oxide of the human-induced emission. Managing Agricultural Greenhouse Gases synthesizes the wealth of information generated from the GRACEnet (Greenhouse gas Reduction through Agricultural Carbon Enhancement network) effort with contributors from a variety of backgrounds, and reports findings with important international applications. Frames responses to challenges associated with climate change within the geographical domain of the U.S., while providing a useful model for researchers in the many parts of the world that possess similar ecoregions Covers not only soil C dynamics but also nitrous oxide and methane flux, filling a void in the existing literature Educates scientists and technical service providers conducting greenhouse gas research, industry, and regulators in their agricultural research by addressing the issues of GHG emissions and ways to reduce these emissions Synthesizes the data from top experts in the world into clear recommendations and expectations for improvements in the agricultural management of global warming potential as an aggregate of GHG emissions

Book excerpt: This book is a product of the initial phase of a broader study evaluating the voluntary and regulatory compliance protocols that are used to account for the contributions of forests in U.S.-based greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation programs. The research presented here is particularly concerned with these protocols’ use of the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data to describe forest conditions, ownership, and management scenarios, and is oriented towards providing regulators and other interested parties with an objective comparison of the options, uncertainties, and opportunities available to offset GHG emissions through forest management. Chapters focus on the protocols for recognizing forest carbon offsets in the California carbon cap-and-trade program, as described in the Compliance Offset Protocol; U.S. Forest Projects (California Air Resources Board, 2011). Readers will discover the protocols used for quantifying the offset of GHG emissions through forest-related project activity. As such, its scope includes a review of the current methods used in voluntary and compliance forest protocols, an evaluation of the metrics used to assign baselines and determine additionality in the forest offset protocols, an examination of key quantitative and qualitative components and assumptions, and a discussion of opportunities for modifying forest offset protocols, in light of the rapidly changing GHG-related policy and regulatory environment. Finally, the report also discusses accounting and policy issues that create potential barriers to participation in the California cap-and-trade program, and overall programmatic additionality in addressing the needs of a mitigation strategy.

Book excerpt: Models are fundamental for estimating the possible costs and effectiveness of different policies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. There is a wide array of models to perform such analysis, differing in the level of technological detail, treatment of technological progress, spatial and sector details, and representation of the interaction of the energy sector to the overall economy and environment. These differences impact model results, including cost estimates. More fundamentally, these models differ as to how they represent fundamental processes that have a large impact on policy analysis-such as how different models represent technological learning and cost reductions that come through increasing production volumes, or how different models represent baseline conditions. Reliable estimates of the costs and potential impacts on the United States economy of various emissions reduction and other mitigation strategies are critical to the development of the federal climate change research and development portfolio. At the request of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the National Academies organized a workshop, summarized in this volume, to consider some of these types of modeling issues.

This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change is one of America's most significant long-term policy challenges. Human activity-especially the use of fossil fuels, industrial processes, livestock production, waste disposal, and land use change-is affecting global average temperatures, snow and ice cover, sea-level, ocean acidity, growing seasons and precipitation patterns, ecosystems, and human health. Climate-related decisions are being carried out by almost every agency of the federal government, as well as many state and local government leaders and agencies, businesses and individual citizens. Decision makers must contend with the availability and quality of information, the efficacy of proposed solutions, the unanticipated consequences resulting from decisions, the challenge of implementing chosen actions, and must consider how to sustain the action over time and respond to new information. Informing an Effective Response to Climate Change, a volume in the America's Climate Choices series, describes and assesses different activities, products, strategies, and tools for informing decision makers about climate change and helping them plan and execute effective, integrated responses. It discusses who is making decisions (on the local, state, and national levels), who should be providing information to make decisions, and how that information should be provided. It covers all levels of decision making, including international, state, and individual decision making. While most existing research has focused on the physical aspect of climate change, Informing an Effective Response to Climate Change employs theory and case study to describe the efforts undertaken so far, and to guide the development of future decision-making resources. Informing an Effective Response to Climate Change offers much-needed guidance to those creating public policy and assists in implementing that policy. The information presented in this book will be invaluable to the research community, especially social scientists studying climate change; practitioners of decision-making assistance, including advocacy organizations, non-profits, and government agencies; and college-level teachers and students.
